Swatch & Review: Rekindling the Fire with MAC Sweetie (Lustre Lipstick)

MAC Sweetie and I, we go way back. Long before I discovered the joy of lipsticks, or any lip products for that matter, one day I felt like I should own one. My lips are naturally pretty pigmented. Back at the time I couldn’t get used to seeing myself with a bolder lip color, but sheer colors never do much for me. However, at that point I thought it might not be a bad idea to start trying, so I went to the MAC store for help.

I asked for a “my lips but better” shade, and the sales assistant pulled out three. To be honest, my first impression on Sweetie wasn’t all that positive. For someone who never wore any lip colors, even Sweetie looked pretty intimidating. When the super pale and cool-toned sales assistant swatched this on the back of his hand, I was appalled: it looked scarily bright! However, he managed to convince me that it wouldn’t look quite as bright on me, so I agreed to try. I’m glad I did, because it gives me credible healthy-looking lips instead of something that screams “I’ve got lipstick on y’all!” It’s juicy and not over-the-top shimmery, not fake or Barbie-looking at all. I was pleased enough to take it home with me.

As you can see, Sweetie is semi-sheer medium pink. Application is very easy. It glides on smoothly without pulling or tugging. Even if I do it without a mirror I don’t risk making myself look ridiculous. Sweetie has a lustre finish, which means the formula has quite a bit of slip, and it lasts an average of 2 hours on me. However, it doesn’t dry my lips out, cling onto the dry bits, or sink into lines. The hint of plumminess in Sweetie makes it great to pair with purple and green eyeshadows, which happen to be the two colors I love the most! What’s more, I wouldn’t say this lipstick is too warm or too cool, which makes it workable whatever your undertone is.

With all the new lip shades I got, I have to admit Sweetie was left under-lover somewhere in my makeup drawer for a while. However, when I remember to pull it out, I always get compliments from sweet people. I have also recently discovered it makes a GREAT pair with MAC Butterfly Dream Plushglass, as you can see here:

Bottom line: If you want a beginner lipstick, or one that works with just about everything and everyone, Sweetie is a good bet. It’s easy to wear, and the only flaw is it doesn’t last too long. If you don’t mind reapplying, it might just become your new best friend!

What do you think? Have you tried Sweetie? What’s the Miss Congeniality in your lipstick stash?

Wow, I really love this colour! It’s a nice nude tone with no frost finish (ugh, i hate that lol).

    • Sunny

Thanks Diana! Frost doesn’t really work on me, so I try to avoid that too :p

MAC does a nice job with these your lips but better shades. I have one (I think it is called “Hue”) that does the exact same thing for me that Sweetie does for you… it was an ease into lipstick buy, sits unloved in my drawer, but just having it close makes me feel better– like, it’s always there if I need it.

    • Sunny

See, that’s interesting. I’m so sure Hue will just wash me out! It’s too pale to work with my coloring, but I know that on the right girls it’s a great shade! Every girl should have a lipstick or two that will never fail her in the stash!

  • Emi at Project Swatch

This looks really lovely on you!

      Thanks Emi!

  • Tina B

This reminds me of a Bare Minerals lip color I have, it’s just so perfectly flattering. I like your combo a lot!

    • Sunny

Thanks Tina! I think Butterfly Dream makes Sweetie slightly edgier, so it’s pretty cool!

  • Naomi Hing

I have sweetie! coincidence that this was one of my first lipstick from mac too!

    • Sunny

Hey Naomi! Yay, Sweetie for the win! It’s a great beginner lipstick!

  • Michelle at LipstickRules

I think I have this! LOL how bad is it that I’m not sure. I love it on you.

    • Sunny

Hey Michelle, haha, we can only infer how big your stash is :p

  • pearlessence

Good call. I’ve never thought of asking for a lipstick shade as “my lips but better”. Maybe then I wouldn’t be so intimidated by wearing it

    • Sunny

Haha, maybe you should try to ask this next time. I understand how totally weird it feels to start wearing any lip colors though, so you’re not alone! Start with simple things :)

I think my first ever lipstick was Naked Paris. LOL what a name huh :) I never wore lipstick till like two years ago. I had already started wearing eye makeup, also about two and a half years ago but I usually wore lip balm or lip gloss and that’s it.

Then I got Sophisto a few weeks later. From there it went I definitely like lipsticks though I stick to my neutral/lips-but-better or just plain nude-ish shades as I love wearing bright coloured/smoky eyeshadow looks way too much.

    • Sunny

Same thing! I have been exploring bolder lip shades, but it feels so weird having to tone my eyes down since they’re almost always what I want people to look at! I’ve heard great things about Naked Paris, so I might give it a try next time I’m at MAC :)

      • fieran

Please do. I heard they might be discontinuing it in the US but most of the stuff that they discontinued there I still see in my nearest MAC store.

  • Phil

    Looks nice!
