Just when you think brights have been done and overdone this season, Dior throws some fun jellies into the mix with Dior Summer Mix! The collection comes with 4 Dior Addict Ultra-Gloss and 4 Dior Vernis Gloss, and it will hit the store here in Belgium on June 20th. From what I can see, it is also due out in the U.S. in June.
Today we’re going to look at Calypso (158) and Cosmo (178). Dior Vernis Gloss promises “Sorbet-like color, glossy nail lacquer,” but as I decoded in the beginning, this means they have a lovely jelly finish! I’m also comparing the two colors with two Dior Vernis I own, Lucky and Plaza, so keep reading after the jump!
From left to right: Dior Vernis 178 Cosmo, 579 Plaza, 158 Calypso, and 659 Lucky.
Calypso (158) is described as a bright candy apple red, but I keep thinking at some angles I see a bit of pink and orange in it. The brush and consistency are easy breezy to work with, with the consistency leaning towards the thinner side, but not runny or watery. Even with the first coat it’s smooth and even, and the dry time is also satisfactory. The jelly finish is adorable. It makes my nails look incredibly shiny without a top coat, and the translucent quality makes it stand out from my current nail polish collection. The only drawback of the jelly finish is the fact that 2 coats wouldn’t make this nail polish opaque. However, after 3 coats, it’s nearly there.
Here is the swatch. I used 2 coats for my index and middle fingers, 3 for my ring finger, and one coat of Dior Vernis Lucky (659) for my pinky. The swatch was done with no top coat, so you can see how much Calypso shines on its own! Lucky pulls fuchsia next to Calypso, which is something I didn’t expect!
Cosmo (178) is described as a cheerful watermelon pink, and it is nothing short of that! It’s more warm-toned, but with the jelly finish I would say it’s workable for most skin/undertones. I wore this to dinner with some girlfriends the other day, and everybody commented on how lovely it is!
Like Calypso, the brush and consistency are really easy to work with, and the dry time is great. It also shines like a mirror, but if you want it to be mostly opaque you’ll need 3 coats. I compared it with Dior Vernis Plaza (579), but as you will see the two aren’t “dupes” at all even in color!
I wore 2 coats of Cosmo on my index and middle fingers, 3 on my ring finger, and 1 coat of Plaza on my pinky.
Out of the two Cosmo has to be my favorite! If you like Cosmo, keep your eyes peeled for the swatch and review of Dior Addict Ultra Gloss in Pink Bikini (it’ll be up in a couple of days). They are a great match both color and finish-wise!
There are two more Vernis Glosses in this collection, Acapulco (118, Tart lemon yellow) and Lagoon (198 Cool swimming pool blue).
I might not be able to rock Lagoon, but Acapulco certainly looks like a lot of fun!
Are you a fan of jelly nail polishes? If so, what are some of your favorites? Is there anything that you might be interested in from this collection?
