MAX Factor Flipsticks Colour Effect Are Coming to Town! Part 1: 05 Bloomy Pink,15 Boreal Mauve, 25 Salsa Red Swatch, Review, FOTD

I have good news for my peeps in Belgium: MAX Factor Flipsticks Colour Effect are coming to town! These duo-headed lipsticks which are apparently popular in the UK are going to be available here on July first!

First of all, you might be wondering what flipsticks are. Well, they are duo-ended lipsticks that come with a darker end and a lighter end. As you will see however, the texture/finish vary quite a bit within the five (not all Flipsticks are created equal), and there isn’t too much generalization to be done. To avoid bombarding you with a post that is much too long, I am separating the reviews into two parts.

Ready to flip with Flipsticks? Read on to see more!

Flipsticks come with clear caps, which make a lot of sense as you can easily tell which end is which. The tips are smaller than that of most regular lipsticks, though in my experience it doesn’t take much longer to put them on. They have a strong-ish vanilla smell (think stronger than MAC) that tends to linger for a while, though it is not overpowering or unpleasant. The packaging is simple yet rather sturdy. The problem with not being able to retract the lipsticks all the way down though, is that you might have to watch out a bit more when you take the cap off or put it back on.

The darker end of Bloomy Pink (05) is a fuchsia-pink. It has a pretty strong sheen that might not seem obvious from the swatch, but on the lips it is very noticeable. The lighter side is a cool icy pink that is pretty shimmery and frosty. Both ends glide on easily enough, though the lighter end does tend to sink into lip lines. Most lighter ends of Flipsticks suffer from this problem, and that’s why I personally prefer to layer the lighter end on the darker one, as using it alone would accentuate lip lines.

Bloomy Pink stains a little but not much. It can pull through a couple of tea, but not really eating. I have not tested out how long it lasts on me with NO food or drink, but I would give it around 3 hours. The finish with metallic sheen gives this Flipstick some more slip.

That’s me wearing Bloomy Pink with the darker side all over my lips and lighter side on the center of my lips. I think this shows pretty clearly how the darker side also has a sheen!

Boreal Mauve (15) has a matte, mauve-y pink side and a shimmery, frosty lavender one. I actually really wish ALL Flipsticks would come with a matte side, because the formula is pretty good! It glides on easily (less slippery than the lighter side but still), doesn’t accentuate or sink into lip lines (though it doesn’t help mask them either), and it has serious lasting power! Boreal Mauve troops through drinks and whole meals. It does come off bit by bit, but the stain stays! This is the type of lipstick that allows you to go through your work day with some color on your lips even with no reapplication. It is not drying either, which is very surprising as a lot of matte lipsticks suffer from this. Even after wearing this for the whole day, my lips stay soft.

This is a pretty cool-toned combination, but strangely enough I like it on myself! I think the brightness makes it wearable for more skin tones.

Salsa Red (25) is another of my favorite. The darker side is a matte orange red, and the lighter end is coral with a strong sheen and shimmer (not frosty). Formula-wise it is also pretty awesome. Like Boreal Mauve, the darker shade can hang in there all day through drinks and food. It does fade, but some stain will always be there. Oh, and did I mention the best part? It is removed easily with Bioderma! My main gripe with long-lasting lip products is that sometimes it is a bloody (and losing) battle to remove it completely at night. That thought alone could really put me off sometimes. With Boreal Mauve and Salsa Red however, you get your lasting power AND fuss-free removal. Sweet deal!

I guess my bigger-than-usual smile is a good hint that if I were to recommend ONE out of the whole bunch, Salsa Red would be it?

Now here is the swatch of Bloomy Pink, Boreal Mauve, and Salsa Red:

Did you see anything you might want to check out? Have you seen similar products? Do you strictly stick to lipsticks that work with your undertone, or do you sometimes look for a bit of contrast?

Stay tuned for the second part that will include the overview and conclusion!

We don’t have Max Factor in the US, but Covergirl makes a VERY similar product – also called a flipstick. I wonder if they’re owned by the same company.

Hey Emi, yes both MAX Factor and Covergirl are owned by P&G as far as I know. When I Googled Flipsticks I actually saw the CG ones too. There is a bigger color selection, though I don’t know if you can find dupes of these from the line!

I love the pinkish ones but you look gorgeous with all colours!

the last one looks great on you!

    • http://mostlysunnybunny.wordpress.com Sunny

Thanks Yak Man! That one and Boreal Mauve are my favorites out of the bunch!

I have one also, but I don’t like the light shimmery side of it. :(

    • http://mostlysunnybunny.wordpress.com Sunny

I understand! That’s why I like Salsa Red the most I think. The shimmery side is not as frosty with that one!

I love the concept of these and how they look on you!

    • http://mostlysunnybunny.wordpress.com Sunny

Thanks Fancie! I think Covergirl has a similar product. You should check it out!

These are pretty–and you look beautiful, as always. Now that I think of it, I never see MAX Factor in-stores here anymore–I wonder where they sell it?? I will have to go look that up…

    • http://mostlysunnybunny.wordpress.com Sunny

Thanks so much Becca! MAX Factor pulled out of the US several years ago as far as I know, but I did hear that Covergirl has a similar product so you should look into that :)

I love the last one on you! Though it might be the smile like you said haha :) That last picture of the swatches isn’t loading on my computer by the way, but I think it’s only me, since no one else has mentioned it ..

    • http://beautybylinde.blogspot.nl/ Beauty by Linde

Nevermind, I can see it now :D I think I’d go for Bloomy Pink myself!

      • http://mostlysunnybunny.wordpress.com Sunny

Haha thanks so much Linde! I do think it swatches/looks a bit different, but if you like lip shades with a stronger metallic sheen why not :)

I love these flipsticks ! All the colours look good on you !

    • http://mostlysunnybunny.wordpress.com Sunny

Thanks so much Jill! I definitely had fun experimenting with them!

Oh wow! I especially love the mauve on you. It’s super stunning, an unexpected pop of color. I’m not a fan of the packaging though… I can’t help but feel like double ended products are gimmicky!

    • http://mostlysunnybunny.wordpress.com Sunny

Thanks Mimi! I think it’s the same reason why I like the mauve! I get what you mean by the packaging, though my main concern is I will nick the lipstick when I put the cap back on!

Haha thanks Lena! I actually just heard the same thing on Temptalia. It’s weird how they pulled it out since so many people actually actively like the brand!
