Who doesn’t like a little birthday present, especially when it’s a sweet one? A while ago I snagged the Sephora VIB birthday present this year, which is a mini duo of the much raved-about Fresh lip treatment. Want to know just how sweet the original Sugar Lip Treatment and Rose Tinted Lip Treatment are? Read on to find out!
A little bit about how my lips: my lips could be dry and fragile, but ever since I discovered the NUXE Honey Lip Balm about 5 months ago, they have been behaving really well (I am close to finishing the pot and will most probably repurchase, but that’s another story). In fact, they have been behaving so well that I don’t normally need a lip balm during daytime. That’s how my lips work: if they get proper moisturization during nighttime, I am fine throughout the day as long as I am not running around in the cold (or testing drying lip products, which fortunately I don’t do often). If they don’t however, I can use all the lip balm I want in the world, and they will still be dry and chapped.
The mini duo contains 2.2 grams (0.08 oz) each, which means together you get a bit more than one full-size Fresh Sugar Lip Treatment (4.3 grams/0.15 oz). The packaging is pretty well-done. The tubes have a metallic finish, and you have to screw the top open to lift it up. That way the caps will always fit perfectly instead of becoming a bit loose over time. I’ve had that happen with other lip balms I tried!
When I opened the original I thought: wait a minute, I know this smell from somewhere! Took me half an hour before I had my eureka moment: it smells like Yakult (for those of you who don’t know what Yakult is, it’s a Japanese pro-biotic drink. Think about it as drinking yogurt with a much thinner texture). It’s sweet and lemony. I find the smell pleasant, though it fades fast and I don’t think many would be bothered in any case.
The texture of the lip treatment is very emollient. It glides on easily, and doesn’t feel overly slippery or look too shiny. It feels great on, and it does last a few hours. It leaves my lips soft and supple, but since I don’t “need” a lip balm I can’t really tell whether the moisturization actually lasts beyond the time the balm is on!
The Rose Tinted one is a very sheer pink in color. On my pigmented lips it really only makes a smidgen of difference, though when I am just running errands and can’t be bothered to pull out a lipstick/gloss I want to wear, it’ll do. Here is the swatch:
One thing I have to warn you about is the fact that they melt in hot weather. I took the Rose Tinted one back to Taipei, and a bit of the tip broke off. I thought it’s because I had kept it in my bag, but now back in Belgium it’s still melting in my house. Just so you know though, it’s been 30 degrees C/90 degrees F here, which is not at all common. For a product that is made with beeswax and oil, I consider it normal. I’m saying this just so that you know you might want to pay some attention when it gets too warm!
The Lip Treatments have an SPF15, which I appreciate. It is a chemical sunscreen, as you can see in the active ingredients here:
Other ingredients include (taken from the Fresh website):
BEESWAX (CERA ALBA), RICINUS COMMUNIS (CASTOR) SEED OIL, SIMMONDSIA CHINENSIS (JOJOBA) SEED OIL, HYDROGENATED OLIVE OIL DECYL ESTERS, VITIS VINIFERA (GRAPE) SEED OIL, FRAGRANCE (PARFUM), COPERNICIA CERIFERA (CARNAUBA) WAX, TRITICUM VULGARE (WHEAT) GERM OIL, LIMNANTHES ALBA (MEADOWFOAM) SEED OIL, PERSEA GRATISSIMA (AVOCADO) OIL, LIMONENE, CITRAL, SUCROSE TETRASTEARATE TRIACETATE, BENZYL BENZOATE, LINALOOL, PRUNUS ARMENIACA (APRICOT) KERNEL OIL, BENZYL ALCOHOL, BHT, RETINYL PALMITATE, ASCORBYL TETRAISOPALMITATE, TOCOPHEROL, RIBES NIGRUM (BLACK CURRANT) SEED OIL, HELIANTHUS ANNUUS (SUNFLOWER) SEED OIL, GERANIOL, CITRONELLOL, ASCORBYL PALMITATE
I am really pleased with the fact that this is not overly-glorified Vaseline that has been spiced up a little!
Bottom line: I wouldn’t be the one who can judge if it does wonders, but if you’re looking for a pleasant lip balm to carry in your bag (NOT in hot weather though), consider Fresh Sugar Lip Treatment. I am a big fan of the ingredient list, and the other tinted lip balms look more pigmented than Rose if that’s what you’re looking for!
Have you tried Fresh Sugar Lip Treatment? What’s your go-to lip balm? Do you prefer a heavily tinted lip balm or just a sheer lipstick?
