It Wasn’t Love at First Sight, but it’s Going to Last with Guerlain La Petite Robe Noire!

Has this happened to you? The first couple of times you sample a scent on a piece of paper you are not impressed, but it sort of grows on you. No, it does more than growing on you. It lures you in fast as lightening and the next thing you know, you’re hooked!

That’s my story with Guerlain La Petite Robe Noire Eau de Parfum!

Since I have already talked about the bottle design and so on here, I am not going to bore you again with the details. In short, Guerlain has managed to come up with something that’s true to the house’s traditions and spirit while making it look modern. I like the ribbon on the cap with Guerlain on. It certainly is an ultra feminine touch!

On me, Guerlain La Petite Robe Noire opens with a loud bang of cherries, or more precisely, smoked cherries. It is sweet, but the “smoked” quality gives it a twist and prevents it from being cloyingly so. As it settles on my skin, I can detect licorice and tea tea as well as something floral (roses). The smoked cherries remain in the background throughout the wear time, even as it develops into the base notes (vanilla, tonka bean, and patchouli among other ingredients).

If you’re familiar with other Guerlain perfumes, you can probably detect the Guerlinade in this one as well. La Petite Robe Noire is my first Guerlain perfume, and I will admit it is an acquired taste that has come with age as well as the colder climate that I now live in. However, when I sampled other Guerlain perfumes at a counter a while ago, I could definitely pick out the unmistakable Guerlinade accord in them as well. For those who have not acquired the taste for Guerlain perfumes, they might be overpowering but for those who have, it is something as near and dear as a security blanket.

To me, the best thing about La Petite Robe Noire is how close it wears on my skin. The Eau de Parfum has real lasting power, and it wraps me around throughout the day. However, it is not something that people from two feet away are obliged to smell. Isn’t the definition of a good perfume something people can only catch a whiff of when they are close enough to the wearer?

Bottom line: Guerlain La Petite Robe Noire is a sweet scent with a grown-up twist. It is great for autumn/winter and perfect for an evening out. If you find the initial bang a little too loud, make sure you spritz some on your skin, because it settles down soon and becomes something tastefully close to the wearer!

Have you tried Guerlain La Petite Robe Noire or any other Guerlain perfumes? Do you like sweet scents or avoid them at all costs? What’s your go-to autumn/winter fragrance?

Glad you’re liking this more! I don’t tend to like super sweet scents but there is a guerlain fragrance I need to find because it smelled so good! (Wish I knew the name!)

    • http://mostlysunnybunny.wordpress.com Sunny

LOL now you have to hunt that down!

      • Joyce (bronzerbunny)

I know! What the heck, i don’t even know what it was called! I thought it started with an S but I could have made that up too! Although I was researching and i thought maybe it could be samsara? LOL this is so silly!

        • http://mostlysunnybunny.wordpress.com Sunny

Or Shalimar? That’s another one starting with an S :)

          • http://bronzerbunny.com Joyce (bronzerbunny)

after some research last night i think it is possibly idylle, which i have a sample of!! but l’instant de guerlain also sounds possible, and maybe insolence. Haha now i totally need to go to a big fragrance counter soon and see

I didn’t like it at first either but now I’m hooked ! It’s such a lovely scent.

I think Guerlain perfumes take some getting used to. They’re not the very mass market type of things but once you’re hooked, you’re hooked!

Hi Sunny, I love the smoked tea and cherries in this scent, but I always have a hard time with Patchouli. However, I do know what you mean about a scent growing on you. It’s so important to sample for that reason; I think the easiest way to gauge a scent’s success is how often you reach for it!

    • http://mostlysunnybunny.wordpress.com Sunny

OOO I get what you mean with patchouli. I have that with figs!

I wasn’t experimental with scents at all. I wore Miss Dior for years and never felt the need to switch things up. Nowadays I’m putting my feelers out, but it’s so hard to form an opinion on a scent because so many factors seem to be involved in the decision!

Sounds like a very sensual and beautiful perfume! ;) I love the girly detailing on the bottle. I’ll bet it smells amazing!!!

    • http://mostlysunnybunny.wordpress.com Sunny

You should give it a try, Jen! See if you can spritz it on at the counter next time :)

I can understand it has to grow on you. Thing is that in this fast forward culture people don’t give it time enough…after about 15 minutes the scent changes, it becomes warmer. That’s my opnion. I love it!

For me it was love at first smell with Guerlain La Petite Rober Noire. I finally bought it and I will review it soon, it now is one of my favourites.

This often happens to me Sunny… several of my favourites were hate at first sniff! I just tried this recently and agree it’s gorgeous – a very womanly scent. Beautiful review.

Ooh I don’t know if this fragrance is very me at all–but I am curious to sniff for myself. Will have to do so next time I’m at a counter

    • http://mostlysunnybunny.wordpress.com Sunny

Yup you should spray it on your wrist just to see! If it doesn’t work you can always wash it off!

  • http://www.gettingcheeky.com Jessica

Great minds think alike, Sunny! I’m so happy you fell in love with La Petite Robe Noire, it’s a complex and fun fragrance. Unfortunately it wasn’t for me … but I think that has to do more with the chemistry of my own skin.

Eep, I cut myself off. I meant to say that great minds think alike as I just posted a review of this myself.

      • http://mostlysunnybunny.wordpress.com Sunny

I get what you mean! There are fragrances I really want to love and do love on others, but on my own skin it makes me dizzy!

  • http://www.lenallure.com L e n a

i have yet to smell this and try this on my skin to know sure (you are absolutely right! you never know until it’s on your skin and melds with it.), but i have a feeling i wouldn’t like it as much. cherry is not my favorite note. ;)
bvlgari pour femme and chanel coco mademoiselle would be my default fall/winter scents. i like carolina herrera 212 sexy when i crave for sweet. this is another grownup sweet fragrance with awesome musk.

    • http://mostlysunnybunny.wordpress.com Sunny

Ahh Lena I knew you’d come up with fantastic picks! To me cherries are pretty dominant in this scent, but I also think different people pick different notes out so you should try in any case!

  • http://twitter.com/BeautyReflectTS BeautyReflections (@BeautyReflectTS)

I agree about scents growing on you! But sweet scents and me don’t get along so well. They feel to “young” for me lol!

    • http://mostlysunnybunny.wordpress.com Sunny

Oh but this one is not a straight-up sweet scent, so I think it has a very grown-up twist!

  • http://mylifeinrouge.wordpress.com Mel

I wasn’t a fan of this one, but I’m glad you like it :)

    • http://mostlysunnybunny.wordpress.com Sunny

I can understand! No perfume is for everybody ;)
