If you don’t love Christmas for anything else, you’ve still got to love it for all the amazing value sets that start flooding the shops around now! Today I have a set that is guaranteed to create MAJOR lemming to share with you!
For those of you who have access to Tarte (or for those of you who want to see pretty things), let’s take a closer look at Tarte Eye Catchers 6-Piece SmolderEYES And Skinny SmolderEYES Collector’s Set!
In short, the idea is that 39 US dollars get you 5 full-size Tarte smolderEYES Amazonian clay waterproof liners (1.6 grams, or 0.056oz. Regular price: 25 USD) and one full-size Tarte skinny smolderEYES Amazonian clay waterproof liner (1.2 grams, or 0.04oz. Regular price: 19 USD). To make it even more attractive, none of the 5 jumbo pencils is part of the permanent line-up or even repeat from other sets in the past (as far as I can tell)!
All the pencils come with sponge smudgers. I don’t know how long they will last, or even how hygienic it is to keep using them, but they work well. On top of that, I think this is yet another reason why these are great for quick looks. I have tried to blend the pencils out with brushes as well as my pinky, and they also work fine!
Let’s begin with the chubby ones! From left to right: Rainforest Black, Gunmetal, Champagne, Ash Violet, and Gold.
Rainforest Black is a blackened emerald green, Gunmetal is a taupe, Champagne is a metallic icy pink, Ash Violet is a grayed-out purple, and Gold is actually a brassy bronze.
This is Onyx with the sharpener included in the set. The sharpener is only good for jumbo pencils, but I’m relatively sure everyone owns at least one regular pencil sharpener already:
Onyx is a very intense cool black, definitely much more intense than most black eyeliners I have tried (be them liquid, gel, or pencil)!
Here is the 6 of them swatched:

These pencils are really as soft and creamy as you can imagine. They go on smooth and not patchy (I have more of a job making Gunmetal even for some very strange reason. It is not too frustrating, but just so you know). They practically seem wet when they go on, and they remain smudgable for longer than most similar products I have tried (MUFE Aqua Shadow, UD 24/7…). Based on this observation alone, I was really worried it would not stay put on my lids. However, the second they dry down, they aren’t going anywhere!
I have worn them on un-primed eyelids, and 9 hours later the only sign of wear I got was a bit of fading in the innermost corners (close to my lash line when I stretch my eyelids taut). They hold up on my lower lash line as well, and Onyx stays put both on my lash line and waterline better than anything else I have tried before! Too bad my lower waterline seems to have an issue when I go at it with this pencil (I start tearing up a little, and my eyes get a bit red). If I line my lower lash line and smudge it into my waterline it seems fine, just not when I put the pencil directly on there.
Essentially, we’re looking at a set with great value and quality. Four out of the five jumbo pencils are perfect for quick smokey looks, while Champagne can either be used easily as an inner corner highlighter or all over the lids with another shade in the crease. They blend into each other easily. If you want to use them as eyeshadow bases, they do an amazing job. However, I love them because they are so low-maintenance and function incredibly well alone. All the colors contain shimmer, so even if you wear them alone they won’t look dull or flat!
Just as a heads-up, these don’t part too willingly with your lids, especially Onyx. I was very surprised to find out it cannot be efficiently removed with Bioderma Sensibio, which is usually very effective but for waterproof mascara and certain liquid eyeliners. It’s not a drawback, but remember to bust your oil-based remover out!
If I have to nitpick, since the pencils are so soft and creamy, they will need to be sharpened more often than most pencils (especially Onyx since you might want your line to be precise. It does make a great smudgy eyeliner look, but still I’m assuming you’ll want the line to be thin enough). This makes them a little less economical, but the formula is so fantastic I am prepared to overlook this part!
Since this post is getting a bit too long, I’m saving the look for a separate post tomorrow. Make sure you tune in for that!
Bottom line: Great quality, great colors, and great price. Tarte Eye Catchers 6-Piece SmolderEYES And Skinny SmolderEYES Collector’s Set is a real steal! If you want some eyeliners that are particularly good for quick looks, do not let this set pass you by!
Have you tried Tarte liners? What are your favorite eyeliner/jumbo pencils? Have you found anything that lasts on your waterline?
