You are Stardust: Guerlain Liu Perfumed Shimmer Powder

“You are both stars, don’t forget. And the stars exploded billions of years ago, to form everything that is this world. Everything we know, is stardust. So don’t forget, you are stardust!”

When I saw Guerlain Liu Perfumed Shimmery Powder, this is the quote that came to my mind. Brownie point if you know where it comes from!

What a collection from Guerlain! I hope you won’t mind the upcoming Guerlain spam, because I have so many beautiful pieces to share with you! Today we’re going to start from Liu Perfumed Shimmer Powder.

Liu is one of the timeless Guerlain classic perfumes. It was launched in 1929, and the packaging is reminiscent of a Chinese tea caddy. Composed of notes such as aldehydes, rose, amber, and vanilla, Liu evokes the glamour of Shanghai.

The Liu Perfumed Shimmer Powder takes on the same bottle as the fragrance, with a black-and-gold spray head and black bulb. When you press on the bulb, a veil of fine golden powder is released onto your skin and hair, leaving a delicate glow.

Not only is Guerlain Liu Perfumed Shimmer Powder the ultimate glamour piece on your vanity (I’ve been wanting a fragrance with a bulb ever since I was a little kid! That and a fluffy powder puff), I actually really enjoy this powder. It is scented but not overpoweringly so, and the scent lingers for quite some hours. It smells soft and powdery to me, and it contains floral and woody notes that I can discern.

On top of that, the sparkle is extremely fine. It is not the glittery stuff a teenager might smear all over herself with (nor is Liu something a teenager could afford, just to be very honest). The powder is distributed very evenly onto the skin. You won’t risk getting a very shimmery patch and nothing else around it. I personally wouldn’t use it on my face, just because I don’t usually go for all-over shimmer. However, because of how fine the shimmer is, I believe there is a way of doing it in a sophisticated manner. It is shimmery powder at its best; nothing short of what I would expect from Guerlain!

I hope you will get a rough idea about how it looks on from this picture. Do note that this really doesn’t capture even half of how beautiful the powder is in real life!

To help the powder stay on better, spray it on right after your body lotion/cream. Removing is rather easy (if you wash, the majority of the shimmer will be gone), and the powder doesn’t get all over the place! It may sound silly, but I adore how some of the powder floats around in the air after pressing the bulb. If Tinkerbell really existed, this is what I imagine her twinkling pixie dust would look like!

Bottom line: While Guerlain Liu Perfumed Shimmer Powder is by no means a necessity, it is the ultimate symbol of glamour and imagination. The packaging functions well, the scent and effect are adorable, and it just might make a fantastic Christmas present for the most glamorous lady in your life!

Have you seen the Guerlain Liu collection? What is on your lust list? Have you tried any shimmer powder or body lotion?

Sunny, your beauty culture translator xx

PS: The quote comes from Before Sunrise. For those of you who have seen the movie, remember the gypsy palm reader? Also, I’m pretty excited about Before Midnight which is coming out next year!

    love the packaging :)

    • Sunny

It’s definitely one of the best things about this one!

  • Zibbie

totally dig the whole package and the pixie effect!! But the price point is way too high to for this use :((

    • Sunny

I know what you mean :( How about putting it on your wish list? Or better, buying it for your mom and then stealing it back? 😉

  • Marla

I haven’t seen this collection yet but I would like to try that fragrance.

    • Sunny

Hey Marla, you have to see the collection in person! I hope you’ll get to do that soon!

  • Ruby

The design of the bottle is really lovely and classy.

    • Sunny

I agree! Makes me feel I have to wear gloves when I handle it though 😉

  • L e n a

    the shimmer looks so pretty!
i am intrigued by the idea of using this on hair as well. it would look so lovely on a soft done updo! :)
can’t wait to see others on you!

    • Sunny

Yess I’m sure it does! I’m working on it :)

  • Claire

I skipped this product but I am so tempted, we still have tons left in stores and it is smiling at me, everytime I go nearby, lol. I do agree, not a must have but SO pretty! and again, Guerlain’s packaging is stunning!

    • Sunny

Haha I’m just imagining all the little bottles smiling and waving at you now! Guerlain has a lot of taste, and at the same time they do interesting stuff. There’s a good reason why it’s one of my favorite brands!

  • sté

Ugh I love this, but it’s a little too expensive. I might buy the budget version from Hema :-) I think the palette is my favorite of the collection, but I haven’t been able to track it down irl. I’m curious to know what you think of it!

    • Sunny

I know what you mean, Ste! I’ll work on reviewing the palette soon. I’m not too sure about the distribution, because I haven’t seen it in my town. I have in Antwerp though, and I bought mine in Brussels. Maybe you should try a bigger city!

  • Teri

Third time is the charm girl! It looks super pretty and I’m impressed! Now I would totally spritz myself some glitter for the holidays, it really adds to the glam!

    • Sunny

Thanks Teri! This one is so super fine and doesn’t look/feel glittery at all! Sparkle for adults :)

  • ValleyDoll

It looks gorgeous but not really something I would use. My wallet is thanking me for this in advance :p.

    • Sunny

Haha I know what you mean! I need a vanity ASAP just so that I can proudly display it on top :)

  • Peggy Timmermans Visagie

It is a really lovely and luxurious powder, I love it!

    • Sunny

      Yup luxurious is the word!

  • Marijke

    Looks really pretty!!

    • Sunny

Yes it is really pretty! Triggers all sorts of imagination :)

  • Chris El

I saw this during the Nordstrom Cosmetic Trend Show and all I could think was, “Ooh pretty!” It’s too bad it’s too expensive for me.

    • Sunny

Yeah I know what you mean. This is something that would be GREAT to receive as a present. I can tell you the quality is there, but not everyone can stomach the price tag.

  • Tracy@Beauty Reflections

Cool! But I’d never use it lol! I don’t have anything fancy to go to ever to use it!

    • Sunny

Not that I do, but for Christmas Eve and the New Year’s Eve this can be the best finishing touch!

  • Jacqueline

The only item I picked up was the Liu palette. I’m go glad I did, the lip colours are super wearable and gorgeous. This shimmer powder is such a luxurious addition, just lovely.

    • Sunny

Yup I got that the palette too and I loooove it! Guerlain has a very strong collection this season!

      • Jacqueline

        Agreed! :)

  • Taylor

Oh Liu. It so lovely. I have been thinking about it since early promo photos. I just love the look and of course that bulb! I’m very sensitive to fragrance so I would have to smell it first. The shimmer looks beautiful.

    • Sunny

Hey Taylor, do check it out. The scent is there, but it’s not overwhelming. It’s a pretty powdery scent if you know what I mean :) The shimmer is SO amazing in real life!

  • Memoiselle

The packaging is so pretty but I won’t splurge so much for shimmery powder. I have a shimmery powder for my shoulder (I use it for a night party/banquet) which is cheaper and I think it works well :)

    • Sunny

I agree this is more like a present/collector’s item, but it really is very adorable :)

  • Alison

I know this is late (and please, don’t ask how I got here at four in the morning!) but AAHHH PRETTY!

    • Sunny

Haha you crack me up, Alison! Guerlain holiday 2012 is one memorable collection. Perles du Dragon Meteorites is my go-to setting powder!
