Eyeshadow I Didn’t Know I Need: Burberry Pale Barley

I blame it on the beauty blogs. Even though I own so many eyeshadows out of which the grand majority is neutral, I gave in to the temptation and swatched the single eyeshadows at the Burberry counter. All of them impressed me with their quality, some of them spoke to me, but the first one I “needed” was No. 22 Pale Barley!

Burberry Sheer Eye Shadows (it beats me why they call these sheer) come in extremely hefty and luxurious compacts with the classic trench pattern on top. The compact opens to a mirror, the eyeshadow, and a sponge applicator.

The trench pattern is also embossed on the eyeshadow. I read that many people start using these from the upper left corner, and I can definitely see why. The eyeshadow weighs 2.5 grams (0.088oz), which is a generous amount of product in comparison with most eyeshadows on the market.

Pale Barley is a pale taupe with tiny pearl and the softest sheen. If you don’t like very shimmery eyeshadows but want something that is not completely matte, Burberry Pale Barley is just that. The texture is amazingly soft, and the pigmentation is out of this world. There is no fallout whatsoever whatever brush I use (both a flat paddle brush and a fluffy blending brush), and with one swipe it gives the eye the prettiest glow!

Here comes the swatch!

I personally can’t get enough of this shade because it’s not just another boring neutral. It has real quality, depth, and dimension. At the same time, it’s extremely practical. I could use it as a light wash on the lids just for brighter eyes on a lazy day, and it works so so well when I want to wear a bright lipstick!

For the look I used Burberry Pale Barley on the inner half, Bobbi Brown Wheat to contour, and Bobbi Brown Candlelight for the inner corners. A lot of Bobbi Brown Black Ink Gel Liner and a bit of Bobbi Brown Rich Caviar on my lower lash line later (all the Bobbi Brown eyeshadows come from the holiday limited edition Rich Caviar Palette), the eyes were done!

Oh you want to know what that lipstick is? It’ll be up here soon!

Bottom line: Burberry Pale Barley Sheer Eye Shadow is something to take into serious consideration if you wear neutrals quite often. It is fantastic quality, the color is universally flattering, and there just is no way you can use this wrong!

Have you tried anything from Burberry? What would you recommend? What are some of your favorite “can’t go wrong” eyeshadows?

Sunny, your beauty culture translator xx

Oh these darn beauty blogs! Reading them makes me buy– it’s bad for me! Gosh I love this on you Ms. Sunny Bunny. It is “brightening” like you say :)

    • Sunny

Haha I know right? Thanks Christine! I really need some shimmer for the inner half of my lids (mattes do absolutely nothing for me there), but I don’t need something metallic or very shimmery all the time :)

  • http://www.pinklavenders.com Rainy Days & Lattes

Yup, I need to get this!! :) It’s so pretty and neutral and everything I love about eyeshadows in one small case :)

    • Sunny

You do, Jen! I foresee this getting a lot of love here, especially because I’ve really been wearing bright lipsticks!

  • http://beautiesatwork.wordpress.com/ beauties

like you said, can’t go wrong with this :)

    • Sunny

Nope. I suppose even a monkey will have problems making this look bad :)

  • http://followmarla.blogspot.com/ Marla

I absolutely love that color. I wish it was in the form of a cream.

    • Sunny

Hey Marla, I also hope Burberry will start making cream shadows. It would be SO cool to have this shade in cream form!

  • http://mybeautyhoard.blogspot.sg/ Jacqueline

Burberry eye shadows are really something aren’t they, I’m so glad you like them. You should try Midnight Brown and Midnight Plum. They are gorgeous shades too.

    • Sunny

Oh they’re definitely something! Thanks for the recs! I’ll check those out soon :)

  • http://www.selphia.com Linda

Burberry makes some really nice shadows :) I like pairing Pale Barley and Midnight Blue together.

    • Sunny

I’m normally not a fan of blue, but Midnight Blue does look very interesting!

lovely color, I’m curious, because your lipstick looks so pretty! ♥_♥ Lately I’m obessed with those kind of colors. But I have not allowed my self to buy a new lipstick haha.

    • Sunny

Haha it’ll be up on Monday. Not a long wait! Nobody told me it’s so dangerous to fall in love with red lipsticks. Nothing is quite as exciting once you get into them!

oh I love this! You always blog amazing beauty products here! Burberry might be too much for my purse though LOL. But yes, I, too, blame it on beauty blogs! haha

NOOOOO WHY MUST YOU TEMPT ME?

    • Sunny

Sorry Larie! I really want to be able to say I have cheaper dupes in my stash, but the fact is I don’t!

  • http://www.furitylashes.com Fruity Lashes

This shadow is simply gorgeous on you. I love softer finish rather than bold shimmery ones now.

    • Sunny

Thanks girly! The finish of Pale Barley is really just right!

  • http://mybeautysample.com/ Becca @ The Beauty Sample

Aaaaah–you too?!! I haven’t gotten anything new from Burberry in TOO long! I NEED this….as well as a couple of the new palettes! :D

    • Sunny

Haha I know what you mean! Need at least one quad… or two!

  • http://myfashiontrendencies.blogspot.com Chris El

I never thought to try out Pale Barley and I’m not too sure if it would show up on my skin, but if it does, I have a feeling that I’ll have to get it. ;)

    • Sunny

Hey girly, I hope it will! I think it’s hard for it not to show up because of the sheen.

  • http://mylucitedreams.com Taylor

I love it! It is the perfect touch and it look fabulous on you. I can’t wait to check out the shadows. Its a Burberry Lipstick Isnt it?! Burberry is just so stunning. Need more…

    • Sunny

Thanks Taylor! You’ll see that lipstick tomorrow, but it’s not Burberry! I’d love to try the new Lip Velvet soon though :)

  • http://themakeuptrain.com Chris

You’re blaming beauty blogs? What about YOUR blog, you cosmetics seductress! LOL,

I want to order some Burberry soon. I am getting this one for sure.

    • Sunny

LOL sorry Christina! I’d love to hear what you think! Pale Barley is probably great to have in your kit, since whatever skin tone your model has it’ll work!

  • http://www.beautyloves.be BeautyLoves

All the Burberry eyeshadows look so good! I’ve seen them around on YouTube, luckily for me I have nowhere nere me where I can buy them :)

    • Sunny

Oh yeah that’s the thing. In Belgium it’s only available at Inno Louise in Brussels. I don’t mind making the trip when I can though. There’s plenty to do in the area anyways!

  • http://www.aucupariabrumalis.wordpress.com Claire

Exactly my thoughts: do I need this colour? Seems like a pretty ‘standard’ colour, but it’s not – I like how complex the shimmers there are and tbh, I don’t have a dupe for PB. Looks very pretty with the red lip and hair. PB is one of those colours, I can wear on its own with some liner and mascara only, without looking washed out or tired.

    • Sunny

Exactly, Claire! Some warmer browns look bleh against my skin tone, but it’s impossible to mess up with Pale Barley!

  • http://www.peggytimmermans.be/blog Peggy Timmermans Visagie

I have a matte purple Burberry eyeshadow and i love it! It’s dark purple, has good pigmentation.

    • Sunny

Ahhh Midnight Plum probably? I have already put that on my wish list LOL

  • http://www.lenallure.com L e n a

    Sunny, you look super gorgeous!!!!
this color seems perfect to pair with any dramatic lip color. so nice! :)

    • Sunny

Hey Lena, this is a good lazy day color as well. It’s a very sophisticated way to brighten up your eyes!

  • http://lolassecretbeautyblog.blogspot.com lola

What a gorgeous FOTD!! I couldn’t agree more about Pale Barley– it’s a gorgeous must-have shade in my opinion. Burberry really makes extraordinarily high quality lovely makeup!

    • Sunny

Thanks so much Lola! I was not initially very excited about the line, but everybody needs great neutrals and that’s what you get from Burberry!

  • http://deijsprinses.wordpress.com/ deijsprinses

Dear, you look so fresh & stunning!

    • Sunny

Aww thanks! Pale Barley really works with everything, including bold lips!

  • http://memoiselle.com/ Meryl @ Memoiselle

Burberry has awesome eyeshadow formula. I don’t have Pale barley and I wish I would not be tempted to get one! :p

    • Sunny

SO awesome that I’m already plotting to lay my hands on some of the new quads! You can’t go wrong with Pale Barley, seriously!

  • http://www.sprinklesonacupcake.com petra

The perfect natural color, I love it! And you always look so pretty!!

    • Sunny

Thanks Petra! This really is a perfect neutral!

  • http://buyingcrueltyfree.com Catherine (@bcrueltyfree)

It’s funny… when I see the word “sheer” I automatically think this probably isn’t for me, but it seems the name totally doesn’t match the product! I’m obsessed with nude tan tones and love brands that appreciate the nuances of neutrals. This looks so “me” :)

    • Sunny

Oh no, from my swatching experience none of their eyeshadows is sheer at all! Make sure you check the line out, Catherine. It sounds like you’ll find a lot of shades that speak to you!

Pale Barley is next on my list! I have Burberry eyeshadow in Mulberry and it’s a beautiful shade. It really makes my blue eyes look even bluer, but think it would look so pretty on any color eyes.

    • Sunny

Hey Patty (what a cute kitty!), you should really lay your hand on Pale Barley! It has a nice dent already and I’ve only own it for several months. I’ll have to check out Mulberry now since it seems to be well-loved as well!

  • Nawi

Hi sunny where were you able to get the pale barley? here in holland it has not been avaible for a long time :-(

    • Sunny

Hey Nawi, I got it here in Brussels. The interesting thing about Burberry here is that Pale Barley was listed as part of the spring release as well. I don’t know why they did that, but from what I can see it’s not so painfully out of stock here! Hope this helps!
