For a One-Swipe Blue Smokey Eye, Try Chanel Apparition Illusion d’Ombre

Chanel Apparition Illusion d'Ombre

I remember when I first started getting into makeup, one of the things on my priority to-learn list was a smokey eye. I have definitely made my mistakes blending the shadows up too high, trying bases that creased on me within a minute or two, and getting powder fallout all the way down my cheeks. That was before I discovered a good hybrid/cream eyeshadow practically does all the work for me! If you want a navy blue smokey eye, take a look atΒ Chanel Apparition Illusion d’Ombre (91. RRP in Belgium: 30 euros).

Chanel Apparition Illusion d’Ombre come in the standard glass pot. It has the typical bouncy texture of Chanel Illusion d’Ombres, but for some reason it seems much creamier than the ones I own. It also feels somehow wetter, which made me slightly skeptical about its lasting power. However, both with and without a primer Apparition holds up like a champion! With a primer it lasts all day, and without a primer I can see very slight fading (but no creasing) in my inner corners after 6-7 hours. It is impressive, but I would still suggest you use Apparition over a primer, as it is opaque in one swipe that way!

Apparition is a shimmery navy blue with a gray undertone. At certain angles it looks a little like a blurple as well, which gives the color incredible depth. It is creamy and smooth. You definitely have enough time to blend it out properly on the lids, but as I have said once it sets it’s there until you remove it. Despite the fact that it is shimmery, there is no fallout at all. It’s hard to imagine a better way of achieving a shimmery navy smokey eye! Here I am wearing Apparition all over my lids with some black gel liner patted into the roots of my lashes. I have Chanel Bleu Exquis Stylo Yeux Waterproof on my lower lash line, which will be reviewed separately soon!

See how the outer edges seems more gray? The gray in Apparition does that when it is blended out. You don’t even have to blend a neutral shade into your crease!

Easy breezy navy blue smokey eye that takes a minute to do, lasts all day, and doesn’t even leave you a whole bunch of dirty brushes to clean up afterwards. What’s not to love? Bottom line: Chanel Apparition Illusion d’Ombre is not my first Illusion d’Ombre, but it certainly is my first Illusion d’Ombre that works so beautifully on its own. Are you running out of time to do your makeup for a party? Swipe this on and you’re good to go! It’s that easy, and it will stay with you until you want it to be gone! Have you tried a Chanel Illusion d’Ombre? Does the formula wear well on you? Does Apparition look like your color?

Beautiful! I can’t wait to hear your thoughts on the blue stylo yeux. :)

    • Sunny

In short I dig it! I think it stays better on my waterline than Santal for example. I’ll write about it in detail soon!

  • beauties

    that blue is amazing :)

    • Sunny

I agree! I like how it looks a little grayer when it is blended out. It really gives you a decent eye look on its own!

  • sandra

which primer did you use with apparition?tx
    btw,it looks beautiful on you!

    • Sunny

Thanks Sandra! I used UDPP. It’s my go-to primer!

  • Mariella (Musing on Beauty)

I have 3 of them. The white one, Fantasme, I use mostly on top of other things to add glitter, as it’s more glittery than really white. The black one, Mirifique, I adore as a liner. It’s much easier to apply than liquid liner with the tiny brush you get with it, and it doesn’t budge all day.
I have been drooling over this blue one since it was launched so I need to get it!

    • Sunny

I still have Illusoire and Epatant on my wish list. The formula works well for me, and the colors are more often than not versatile and complex :)

  • Melanie

It looks stunning on you! Apparition is a very versatile blue. I use mine on its own all the time. I love the Illusion d’ombres. Great invention.

BTW, tried my le Volume in Bleu. The colour is more what Extracils in blue was (think it was called marine). But what an incredile formula! I am challenged in the eyelash department and after I put it on, my three-year-old son stopped in his tracks, pointed and said, “Pretty eyes, mama!” No other eye makeup. Now that says something!

    • Sunny

Thanks Melanie! Illusion d’Ombres are great, aren’t they πŸ˜‰

I LOVE the story about your little boy! I guess that will make you a loyal fan of Bleu! I can’t get over how this mascara works for me. It’s amazing!

  • Larie

The formula actually doesn’t like me very much, so I don’t like it very much either πŸ˜› I wish it worked better, because I have Mirifique, and it is bee-yoo-tiful. Apparition looks really pretty, too, but because of my gripes with the formula, I’ll have to pass. You are rocking that blue shade, though!

    • Sunny

Aww I’m so sorry to hear that! I guess no formula works for everyone!

  • Marla

I love everything about this look. It’s so natural. Love your lip shade also.

    • Sunny

Thanks Marla! It’s Chanel Fantasque! Nowadays if I want something toned-down I reach for it πŸ˜‰

  • Claire

I have all besides Fantasme (too sheer and sparkly for my liking) and love them! I also noticed a difference in texture (riviere seems to be a bit different) but the quality is equally brilliant. Those are pure perfection! I think you are the first person who made apparition interesting to me, I think I have rethink (not) buying it πŸ˜‰

    • Sunny

Oh wow that’s an impressive collection! You should at least swatch Apparition. It’s creamier and somehow wetter, but it performs just as well!

  • Redhotjillypeppers

This colour looks really great on you !

    • Sunny

Thanks Jill! I actually think it will work for many!

  • Rose

Gorgeous! I’m telling you, blues look wonderful on brown eyes and you are no exception! Love your whole look today!

    • Sunny

Aww thanks so much Rose! Now I totally believe you!

  • xLoveHappyx

I love when a shadow blends out to a complementary looking color on its own! This shadow looks lovely, ahhh Chanel :)

    • Sunny

If you like navy blue don’t miss out on Apparition! It is so easy to blend out and the color just looks different!

  • Teri

Oh pretty! Ddi I hear the word blurple somewhere? Lol! It looks intensely pigmented and amamzing!

    • Sunny

Haha yeah after you blend it out you can definitely catch something purply πŸ˜‰

  • Becca @ The Beauty Sample

For some reason, the Chanel Illusion d’Ombres never really appealed to me all that much. I’ve been curious a few times but I never have felt like I had to have any of them…until I saw your post. Apparition is SO so stunning–it looks so smooth and *crazy* pigmented from your swatches! I NEED to have it!! πŸ˜›

    • Sunny

Aww thanks Becca! You should look into Illusion d’Ombres! I have Illusoire and Epatant on my wish list!

  • Taylor

Apparition is not short on pigment! It’s a stunner, and actually very wearable. I’m seeing lots of blues for spring, I’ll have to experiment. Looks like you got that smokey look down btw <3

    • Sunny

Oh no it packs A LOT of pigment! Thanks so much Taylor! I think the blue trend will continue this summer (a little bird told me Dior is doing green and blue this summer), so it would be a good time to start experimenting!

  • Catherine (@bcrueltyfree)

Ooh, Apparition looks lovely! I always feel dark shadows aren’t that flattering on me, since my eyes are pretty deep set, so I like that this isn’t TOO too dark.

    • Sunny

Oh trust me, I can’t use a lot of very dark eyeshadows either (I risk closing my eyes instead of opening them), but Apparition is just mid-to-dark!

  • Kelly

That’s an easy way of making smokey eyes and it looks amazing on you!

    • Sunny

Thanks so much, Kelly! I’m lazy and always running out of time, so this is my preferred method!

  • Tracy@Beauty Reflections

GAHHHHH! It so PERFECT on you! I almost bought it as well, but these just don’t last on me. :( MAkes me SO SAD because you know I love me a smoky navy eye! So sophisticated Sunny!

    • Sunny

Aww thanks Tracy! I’m so sorry to hear the formula doesn’t seem to last on you. I could have weird lasting power problems too, but these measure up! I hope you’ll find something similar that lasts!

  • Rainy Days & Lattes

I can’t believe you wrote blurple! LOL πŸ˜€
It’s a really nice shade I think. Blues are really gorgeous!

    • Sunny

Haha sorry Jen. Sometimes blurple is the word :p

  • Meryl @ Memoiselle

I have apparition too and t’s one of my fave blue eyeshadow. The navy blue color really brighten up my look! And u look gorgeous in that look Sunny!

    • Sunny

Thanks so much Meryl! I was insanely scared of anything blue when Apparition came out last year, but now I’ve got to say I found a new color to play with!

  • Jacqueline

Gorgeous Sunny, that reminds me to give my Apparition some love.

    • Sunny

Yes you should! It’s such an easy-to-use and stunning shade!

  • Tina @ My Highest Self

What a gorgeous blue! I did try a navy smokey eye with a similar product and loved the outcome too.

    • Sunny

I know! Can’t believe I steered clear of blue for so long!

  • Ziba

I know what you mean about powder fallout all the way down to your checks, lol. The navy and gold color combo is quite different from other smokey eye color combos I’ve seen out there.

    • Sunny

Actually now come to think of it I should do something with these two shades combined. I think they’d totally work together!

  • Sofia

This colour looks great on you. When I started to wear more make up I wanted to know how to do a smokey eye. Its weird how things went I dont think I ever learn “properly”, I just naturally evolved somehow into doing smokey eyes, I actually do it subdued nearly every day now. Again, I think it looks fabulous on you!

    • Sunny

Thanks so much Sofia! When I started out I wanted to find a “definition” of smokey eyes, but I really didn’t find any (at least not in a standard sense). I guess as long as you’re creating some sort of blended haze around the eyes you’re fine πŸ˜‰
