The theme of this month’s Lipstick Bandit collaboration brought up many an awkward conversation at the Mostly Sunny headquarters. We took on the challenge of finding out about the lipstick preferences of the guys in our lives. In my case, it’s Dr. D, whose opinion on makeup remains a mystery to me.
Many guys would tell you they don’t like “too much makeup,” but most of the time that means makeup they can easily spot as makeup. If you do quite a bit of foundation intelligently, they might not be able to tell. Add a red lipstick, however sheer it is, bang! All of a sudden you’re wearing “too much makeup.”
Dr. D. has pretty much turned a blind eye to my makeup experiments over the years. I know red lipsticks trigger the “too much makeup” alarm for him, but he has learnt not to wince. This time around however, I had to figure out what he actually finds pretty!
My initial approach was direct and very naive. “So what kind of lipsticks do you like on me? Coral pink? Fuchsia? Soft pink?…” Before I went through the list of colors I could think of, Dr. D. interrupted me with a classic “I don’t know (you know, the kind of “I don’t know” with a pinch of exasperation, like he’s wondering what got to my head this time).” What was I thinking? How can he possibly know what coral pink is?
But I couldn’t give up! I have a blog post to write! Therefore, I designed an intelligent experiment. I chose several photos with me wearing shades in different color families and asked him to pick. This time it worked. He pointed at one with no hesitation:” this.” It’s Guerlain Shalimar Rouge Automatique. Oh, so bright pink it is!
Despite the fact that I have a real soft spot for corals, I do enjoy bright pinks a lot. The slightly cool undertone brightens my face and teeth, and I believe they are flattering on a wide range of skin tones!
Now come to think of it, I should start wearing bright pinks more often!
Do you know what lipstick shades your special someone enjoys seeing on you? Don’t forget to check out what other Lipstick Bandits‘ men think!
