Taking on the Summer Heat & Humidity with Estee Lauder Double Wear Light

Estee Lauder Double Wear Light

If you can recall what we talked about here, you might remember my T-zone goes wild in summer. While my face was melting away in Taipei, I saw this Lisa Eldridge tutorial about makeup for summer in the city. I laid my hands on a sample of Estee Lauder Double Wear Light as soon as I could, and I went back for the full-size tube after a couple of trial runs. Estee Lauder keeps its promise: this foundation does stay in place!

EL Double Wear Light review

While the original Double Wear comes in a pumpless bottle, Double Wear Light has a convenient and hygienic squeeze tube (the 30ml/1 oz tube goes for 37 euros in Belgium). It is scent-free. The line includes 6 shades (“intensity”), and I am matched to Intensity 3. I am closer to MAC NC30 for the moment, and Intensity 3 matches me pretty well. It might be every-so-slightly lighter for my forehead, but it’s nothing a bit of bronzer wouldn’t fix!

The texture of Estee Lauder Double Wear Light is very easy to work with. It glides onto the skin smoothly and sets to a velvety matte finish. A thin layer offers light coverage, but if you want more (say on your chin), you can build it up with another thin layer. It has amazing lasting power even in the heat and humidity of Taipei. With some help from a mattifying primer (Becca Resurfacing Primer) and oil-controlling setting powder (Tarte Smooth Operator), I didn’t even have to blot till late afternoon. Without a primer, I’d get a bit of shine (in my T-zone) faster, but this is not a foundation that would break down or melt off easily, if at all!

There’s only one catch: Double Wear Light doesn’t photograph as impressively as it works in real life. It is surprising because it has such a low SPF (10), and it’s not the white cast I’m talking about. I can’t quite put my finger on it. For some reason it just doesn’t look very smooth in photos, but maybe that’s just me. Also, this should be a minor concern for most.

Here is the ingredient list if anyone is interested:

Bottom line: If you haven’t found a foundation that will resist the heat and humidity of summer, I would highly recommend Estee Lauder Double Wear Light (you do need a bit of luck to find a match since there are only 6 shades though). I think it works particularly well for combination and oily skin. It keeps shine at bay and holds up exceptionally well. That’s really all I want from a foundation in summer!

Have you tried Estee Lauder Double Wear (I am personally less compelled to purchase this one because it doesn’t come with a pump) or Double Wear Light? Have you found anything that will look good all day in the heat?

No parabens so I might give this one a try next summer !

    • http://mostlysunnyblog.com/ Sunny @Mostly Sunny

Oh yaaay! I hope you’ll like it!

  • http://kelly-yes.blogspot.com Kelly

I agree. My friend used to work for EL and he gave me a sample of DWL a couple years back. I wore it disc golfing one hot summer day and was so impressed how it did not budge! Definitely an awesome foundation. I prefer it over DW due to the more natural finish. Surprised this doesn’t get more love from oily skinned consumers since it is quite great at controlling oil.

    • http://mostlysunnyblog.com/ Sunny @Mostly Sunny

Hey Kelly, I guess most people just don’t know about it? There are SO many new foundations on the market, and for some reason some are raved about more than the others. I’m glad I found it though!

  • Diana

I love this one as well! I think the coverage is a bit too light for me, so I prefer the original DW. But this one’s perfect for days when I don’t have much blemished/redness.

    • http://mostlysunnyblog.com/ Sunny @Mostly Sunny

Hey Diana, you have such great skin I find it hard to believe this one doesn’t have enough coverage for you ;) I like how easy this is to use. I smeared some on with my fingers yesterday and it was just fine!

  • beauties

sounds like something I could use :)

    • http://mostlysunnyblog.com/ Sunny @Mostly Sunny

Yeah I’m still loving it! Don’t think I’ll be able to wear it in autumn/winter though. It might look a bit too dry.

  • http://jadeinthepalace.blogspot.com/ Cassandrapamela

I have been wanting to try this one! I have tried the double wear foundation but I found it too heavy for my liking.. this one sounds more right up my alley ! thanks for the review, Sunny !

    • http://mostlysunnyblog.com/ Sunny @Mostly Sunny

Hey Pamela, you should give this a go! See if you can get a sample packet first. The one I got is Intensity 2. It’s too light for my skin tone, but you’re lighter than I am so it might work!

  • Lily

I seem to have tough luck in finding shade match with Estee Lauder foundations. I was matched to 2 but it was too peachy for my skin, so then I was matched to 1.5 which was more yellow. It still didn’t do that well, and it’s quite bad. I really liked the texture and staying power.

    • TracyBeautyReflections

Me too Lily! I find it hard to get matched in their foundations. Clinique too. They’re launching lighter shades here in Canada in the fall though, so it’ll be curious to see if any of them are better!
Glad you found something Sunny! It sounds fabulous!

      • http://mostlysunnyblog.com/ Sunny @Mostly Sunny

Hey Tracy and Lily, I can see why it’s tough! There are 6 shades in the line-up, and only 3 (1-3) are available in Taiwan. I’m glad I was matched to 3, but there are many darker/paler girls who most probably can’t find a match! I’ve never tried a Clinique foundation. The way they name their foundations is SO confusing that I just gave up!

  • http://kissandmakeupsbeautyblog.com/ Kiss & Make-up

I used to have the original Double Wear and I liked it a lot because of the insane coverage. And yet it still looked relatively natural, except for maybe from real up close.

    • http://mostlysunnyblog.com/ Sunny @Mostly Sunny

Hey Melissa, I really haven’t tried anything with a high coverage yet! I don’t mind trying one, but unless the original formula starts coming with a PUMP, I probably won’t do it!

  • Icaria

Good find! I just might try this one next summer. I like EL DW BB but find it a little thick, a little hard to work with to make it look smooth.

    • http://mostlysunnyblog.com/ Sunny @Mostly Sunny

Hey Helene, you probably won’t have a problem with this one! I smeared it on with my fingers yesterday when I had two minutes to do my makeup for a family lunch. It looked good just like that!

  • http://eyeheartit.blogspot.com Larie

Everyone seems to love these! I never find myself by the EL counter, though, haha.

    • http://mostlysunnyblog.com/ Sunny @Mostly Sunny

Hey Larie, I’m not a hardcore fan (yet) but there are some things that I do like from EL!

  • http://www.pinklavenders.com/ Rainy Days & Lattes

I love this foundation! If it can withstand humidity from Taiwan, it’s a keeper. Hardcore foundation!! ^_^

    • http://mostlysunnyblog.com/ Sunny @Mostly Sunny

Hey Jen, it is pretty hardcore! It pretty much refuses to melt off LOL

  • http://MyLuciteDreams.com/ MyLuciteDreams

This sounds like something even I could use right now. I’m glad it’s working well for you! The texture really looks lovely.

    • http://mostlysunnyblog.com/ Sunny @Mostly Sunny

Hey Taylor, I’m still wearing this! Sometimes just on areas that I need a bit of coverage and not my entire face. It looks good in real life!

  • http://midwestglam.com/ Lisa @ MidwestGlam

I was debating on whether or not to try this. I’ve heard so many great things and it seems like the perfect fit for my skin type. I’ll have to check it out.

    • http://mostlysunnyblog.com/ Sunny @Mostly Sunny

Hey Lisa, see if you can get a sample packet first! I always do that before purchasing a base product if it’s possible.

  • ValleyDoll

I like everything from the Double Wear line. Scratch that, LOVE everything. But you’re right, they don’t photograph that well.

    • http://mostlysunnyblog.com/ Sunny @Mostly Sunny

Hey Eva, ooo thanks for the heads-up! Glad to hear I’m not the only one who doesn’t think it photographs well. It’s so strange, no? Considering it contains such a low SPF!

  • http://beautyreductionista.blogspot.ca/ Liz

I got a sample from Sephora and tested it a few weeks ago. It’s good but I tried something else that was amazing at the same time and was won over by that one instead. This has amazing coverage and doesn’t feel as “light” as I wanted, so I’m kind of flabbergasted to think of how the regular Double Wear might feel.

    • http://mostlysunnyblog.com/ Sunny @Mostly Sunny

Hey Liz, ooo so what’s the amazing thing you tried? Now I’m curious! I think the regular Double Wear is really more of an autumn/winter/photo shoot type of foundation. It might be great but I just can’t work with a foundation with no pump!

      • http://beautyreductionista.blogspot.ca/ Liz

Really, it doesn’t have a pump?? Same here! Lame.

  • http://www.glambunctious.com/ Kristen / Glambunctious

I’ve never tried anything from the Double Wear line but I’ve always heard it’s fantastic for oily skin. I love this version in the tube – if it outlasted Taipei humidity, it would probably be a real winner for me! Atlanta humidity is pretty bad and I had a hard time finding makeup this summer that didn’t do the electric slide down my face! I did find something I love that stays in place well (Laura Mercier Silk Creme) but maybe I’ll try this Double Wear Light next year!

    • http://mostlysunnyblog.com/ Sunny @Mostly Sunny

Hey Kristen, thanks for sharing! I need to check out that Laura Mercier foundation soon! Apparently it has great coverage so maybe it’ll work well for photos :)

  • http://bronzerbunny.com/ Joyce (bronzer bunny)

i’ve been really curious about the line but haven’t tried anything from it! You should do a before & after!

    • http://mostlysunnyblog.com/ Sunny @Mostly Sunny

Hey Joyce, I thought about it but this really photographs funny :p

      • http://bronzerbunny.com/ Joyce (bronzer bunny)

lol ok, no worries then. what this means is, i really need to get some samples and try them! :P

  • Man Yee Lau

I have received very good news from the SA at Inno in Rue Neuve. They will have all the Estee
Lauder skincare collections available in some Inno stores which are exclusive in Asia! I can’t wait to test out their famous Estee Lauder Nutritious Radiant Vitality Essence Oil. I have read so many good things about it. :D it will be out this month. They already have the biggest part of the Cyber White collection.

    • http://mostlysunnyblog.com/ Sunny @Mostly Sunny

Hey Man Yee, wow that’s good news! Most Asia-exclusives simply aren’t available in other parts of the world, so I think Estee Lauder is doing something very clever there!
