There isn’t much that is more classic than a good, creamy red lipstick, maybe except for a good creamy red lipstick from Dior! I got the 999 Dior Contour and Vernis a while back. When the collection became available, naturally I wanted to check out 999 Rouge Dior. To be honest I wasn’t 100% sure I would love it when I swatched it: there is something about this lipstick that I can’t put my finger on. The second I tried it on, however, I immediately knew I had to have it!
The packaging of the new Rouge Dior is chic and minimalist. There is no cannage pattern all over. Instead, the signature navy blue surface is glossy and smooth, with the initials engraved on top and a silver ring of cannage pattern around the base. The formula has the typical smell I associate with luxury lipsticks, but it is not overwhelming and it does not bother me.
Here is Dior 999 Rouge Dior in all its glory. Monsieur Dior named his first lipstick 9 (we are never given the reason why, but remember how he had his superstitions? I’m guessing 9 might have been his lucky number). Later it came back as 99, and eventually 999.
999 is a medium red with a pinch of pink and berry mixed in. The lightweight creamy texture glides on easily, making lips glossy smooth. Once on, it fades evenly and doesn’t move around. What impresses me the most about the new Rouge Diors is how hydrating they are. 999 doesn’t cling onto dry patches. What’s more, any dry patches I have simply slough off after a while. I also swear by the end of the day, my lips are softer and plumper! Honestly: most lip balms I’ve tried don’t even perform this well!
Here is how Dior 999 Rouge Dior swatches. Left: one pass. Right: built up.
I compared 999 with some other reds in my stash, but just as I suspected, nothing would be much of a dupe. From left to right you see Dior 999 Rouge Dior, Dior Diorling Diorific Lipstick (limited edition from last year’s holiday collection), Tom Ford Diabolique Lip Color, and Make Up For Ever N45 Rouge Artist Natural (in retrospect I’m not sure why I busted this one out. It’s not really a red):
Here is how 999 Rouge Dior looks over 999 Dior Contour:
From what I can see, 999 does brighten my complexion and make my teeth whiter, which is what everybody wants from a red lipstick! The only thing I would like to add is I only like 999 when it is full-on. Darling and Trafalgar (will be blogged about soon) are both beautiful when they are worn down to a stain, and I am perfectly happy not reapplying after a meal. It’s not that 999 doesn’t wear down evenly or stain well. It’s just that I personally feel it’s a shade you have to fully commit to: either reapply after a meal to keep it bold, or don’t wear it at all. But then again, this could be personal!
Now that we have seen the lipstick and the nail polish, let’s move on to the Dior Contour!
Dior Contour comes with a brush on the other end (it’s soft and I’m pretty sure it’s made with real hair) and a sharpener. The texture is nice and soft: there is no pulling, no tugging, and it is not even drying on its own! It is not the longest-wearing lip liner I have tried, and I think that’s the trade-off for the texture and moisturization. Still, it defines the shape of the lips and prolongs wear time!
Dior 999 Rouge Dior Dior Contour is a cherry red (on the left):

Dior 999 Rouge Dior, Dior Contour, and Vernis altogether!
Bottom line: I would encourage everyone to take a look at the new Rouge Diors. If you like a good creamy lipstick, Dior has really excelled with the new formula. 999 is not just any red either: besides the complexion-brightening and teeth-whitening bonus that you want from a good red, the berry tone in it makes it unique. Dior 999 Dior Contour is soft and gentle on the lips. It doesn’t create harsh lines that will embarrass you as the lipstick fades, though it might not last as well as a lip liner that is harder and drying on the lips.
Are you back in the red state of mind? How are you liking the new Dior 999?
