The New Dior Red: 999

Dior 999 FOTD

There isn’t much that is more classic than a good, creamy red lipstick, maybe except for a good creamy red lipstick from Dior! I got the 999 Dior Contour and Vernis a while back. When the collection became available, naturally I wanted to check out 999 Rouge Dior. To be honest I wasn’t 100% sure I would love it when I swatched it: there is something about this lipstick that I can’t put my finger on. The second I tried it on, however, I immediately knew I had to have it!

Dior 999 Rouge Dior packaging

The packaging of the new Rouge Dior is chic and minimalist. There is no cannage pattern all over. Instead, the signature navy blue surface is glossy and smooth, with the initials engraved on top and a silver ring of cannage pattern around the base. The formula has the typical smell I associate with luxury lipsticks, but it is not overwhelming and it does not bother me.

Dior 999 Rouge Dior

Here is Dior 999 Rouge Dior in all its glory. Monsieur Dior named his first lipstick 9 (we are never given the reason why, but remember how he had his superstitions? I’m guessing 9 might have been his lucky number). Later it came back as 99, and eventually 999.

999 is a medium red with a pinch of pink and berry mixed in. The lightweight creamy texture glides on easily, making lips glossy smooth. Once on, it fades evenly and doesn’t move around. What impresses me the most about the new Rouge Diors is how hydrating they are. 999 doesn’t cling onto dry patches. What’s more, any dry patches I have simply slough off after a while. I also swear by the end of the day, my lips are softer and plumper! Honestly: most lip balms I’ve tried don’t even perform this well!

Here is how Dior 999 Rouge Dior swatches. Left: one pass. Right: built up.

I compared 999 with some other reds in my stash, but just as I suspected, nothing would be much of a dupe. From left to right you see Dior 999 Rouge Dior, Dior Diorling Diorific Lipstick (limited edition from last year’s holiday collection), Tom Ford Diabolique Lip Color, and Make Up For Ever N45 Rouge Artist Natural (in retrospect I’m not sure why I busted this one out. It’s not really a red):

Here is how 999 Rouge Dior looks over 999 Dior Contour:

From what I can see, 999 does brighten my complexion and make my teeth whiter, which is what everybody wants from a red lipstick! The only thing I would like to add is I only like 999 when it is full-on. Darling and Trafalgar (will be blogged about soon) are both beautiful when they are worn down to a stain, and I am perfectly happy not reapplying after a meal. It’s not that 999 doesn’t wear down evenly or stain well. It’s just that I personally feel it’s a shade you have to fully commit to: either reapply after a meal to keep it bold, or don’t wear it at all. But then again, this could be personal!

Now that we have seen the lipstick and the nail polish, let’s move on to the Dior Contour!

Dior 999 Rouge Dior, Vernis, Dior Contour

Dior Contour comes with a brush on the other end (it’s soft and I’m pretty sure it’s made with real hair) and a sharpener. The texture is nice and soft: there is no pulling, no tugging, and it is not even drying on its own! It is not the longest-wearing lip liner I have tried, and I think that’s the trade-off for the texture and moisturization. Still, it defines the shape of the lips and prolongs wear time!

Bottom line: I would encourage everyone to take a look at the new Rouge Diors. If you like a good creamy lipstick, Dior has really excelled with the new formula. 999 is not just any red either: besides the complexion-brightening and teeth-whitening bonus that you want from a good red, the berry tone in it makes it unique. Dior 999 Dior Contour is soft and gentle on the lips. It doesn’t create harsh lines that will embarrass you as the lipstick fades, though it might not last as well as a lip liner that is harder and drying on the lips.

Are you back in the red state of mind? How are you liking the new Dior 999?

I really like the reformulated Rouge Dior’s. They feel really comfy on lips, much due to hyaluronic molecules or something like that, and reasonable staying power – When you invest in a high-end lippy you’ll want to take it out and reapply, that’s part of the joy! My faves are 999 and 5th Avenue, such gorgeous colours for fall 😀 The thing you couldn’t quite put your finger on..? Could it have something to do with the way it swatches less than opaque? Also I find the 999 to be too orange for some – whereas I’d expected it to be more of a neutral red or at least cooler.

    • Sunny @Mostly Sunny

Hey girly, I’m glad you like the formula as well! 999 doesn’t really pull orange on me, but I guess it has a lot to do with different undertones. I wasn’t sure I’d like it because I prefer neutral/cool-toned reds, but I tried it on and bam!

  • Redhotjillypeppers

I like this colour a lot! Looks great on you btw.

    • Sunny @Mostly Sunny

Thanks, Jill! You should try it out to see how it looks on you!

  • Beauty Box

I like reds with some orange undertone and this looks like what I would love! It looks gorgeous on you – suits your skin tone to a T.

    • Sunny @Mostly Sunny

Hey Yu Ming, 999 is interesting in a way that I still can’t quite tell what undertone it has LOL But in any case, try it on and I hope you’ll love it too!

  • Phil

This is your color of red, looks very vamp like in the first picture.

    • Sunny @Mostly Sunny

Thanks, Phil! I’ll make it my go-to red this year :)

  • Kiss & Make-up

    • Sunny @Mostly Sunny

Ahh thanks, Melissa!!! It’s something that I can’t dupe at all!

  • LifeOfBun

Lovely.. when I saw this picture in my feed my first thought was: Lisa Eldridge pose! Haha!

    • Sunny @Mostly Sunny

LOL really? Now that you said it I can totally see that! Wasn’t posing like that consciously though 😉

      • LifeOfBun

Well you pulled it off perfectly anyway! ;D

  • Liz

What a great red! You look fantastic. :)

    • Sunny @Mostly Sunny

Thanks so much, Liz! It’s nice that Dior came up with such a good one!

  • Lily

I absolutely love this red! I have to get it :-)

    • Sunny @Mostly Sunny

You go, girl! I’d love to see 999 on you!

  • Teri

Such a pretty red on you! It’s not for me but you pull it off perfectly!

    • Sunny @Mostly Sunny

I still think you should try it on to find out if it works! I wasn’t sure at all when I swatched it, either!

  • Yak Man

love red lipsticks ♥. I like the very first photo of this post!

    • Sunny @Mostly Sunny

Thanks so much, Yak Man! You do look great with red lipsticks. You should try this on!

  • Bella

Wow, unbelievably gorgeous! I am just not sure where I would wear it though. It’s a bit full on for my job and as a mom of two small kids I don’t really “go out”- go out much ;).

    • Sunny @Mostly Sunny

Thanks so much, Bella! Oh I understand. I’ve started wearing whatever makeup I want when I hang with close friends though. Otherwise I’ll never wear anything LOL

      • Bella

That’s a great policy, haha! I am always embarrassed about they way my glass is always the one with the lipstick anyway, so may as well make it a red one ;). You make this look likem THE perfect red. I want.

        • Bella

Sorry, typos galore. I swear I’m drinking Lipton mint tea.

          • Sunny @Mostly Sunny

LOL it’s OK! I find lipstick on glass a little icky, so I keep wiping it down regardless of color 😉

  • TracyBeautyReflections

It’s a perfect full on red on you Sunny! You look gorgeous!

    • Sunny @Mostly Sunny

Thanks so much, Tracy! It’s higher-maintenance than the other Rouge Diors I’ve tried, but that’s probably because I like reds when they’re full-on!

  • Bellyhead

oh my goodness! That is a really beautiful red on you!

    • Sunny @Mostly Sunny

Thanks sooo much, girl! <3 You should try it on to see how it looks on you!

  • Larie

CAn’t go wrong with Red or Dior lipstick! 😀 😀 😀 You look stunning!

    • Sunny @Mostly Sunny

Thanks so much, Larie! Do check the line-up out! I’m pretty sure this won’t be my last one (far from it)!

  • Chris El

I’ve been wanting to try out the new formula as I love Dior lipsticks. Color looks great on you and it really does brighten your complexion. I think I’m leaning towards a pink…surprise, surprise ;).

    • Sunny @Mostly Sunny

Thanks so much, Chris! There are actually some pinks in the line-up that I would love to swatch soon! I hope you’ll find a shade you love :)

  • jenn @Abeautifulzen

i love it when nails and lips match. it seems like such a small thing but it really unifies a look. and i also agree about ‘committing’ to a lipstick. if you’re gonna wear a bold color, it really does need to be touched up after a meal. i find, after-meal lips from a super pigmented or bold color just look splotchy and sort of unkempt.

    • Sunny @Mostly Sunny

Hey Jenn, apparently matching nails and lips are the new trend! Actually I’ve tried a lot of lipsticks that stain well, so if I’m just hanging with friends most of the time I don’t even feel the need to reapply. 999 does stain too and the stain is even, but I love it so much more when it’s in-your-face!

  • MyLuciteDreams

Sunny, I love this shade on you. It’s incredibly sophisticated and classic. It might be the perfect red! Love!

    • Sunny @Mostly Sunny

      Aww thanks so much, Taylor!

  • Joey Chong

    Hello Sunny!!
I love everything about this post, from your pictures to the swatches =)
I need to take a look at them ASAP.

    • Sunny @Mostly Sunny

Thanks so much, Joey! I’m glad you liked it! Do check these out soon! I swatched some more today and zeroed in on a couple more LOL

  • ValleyDoll

The lipstick looks so chique and elegant on you, it’s stunning :-) !

    • Sunny @Mostly Sunny

Thanks so much, Eva! It’s a pretty amazing red!

  • Jacqueline Ma

Red lipstick! Damn it looks so good on you, classy yet sexy at the same time. I think I might have to go the counters to give it a swatch.

    • Sunny @Mostly Sunny

Thanks, Jacqueline! Definitely take a look at the new Rouge Diors! The formula blew my mind, and there are so many drool-worthy shades!

  • Whitney

The red and white combination is smashing!!! Looks like out of a movie! I saw the lipsticks at Sephora the other day..I had to resist so hard to not spend my money…. T___T

    • Sunny @Mostly Sunny

Thanks so much, Whitney! Wait for the sales and grab one!

  • Anne

Seriously. That lipstick looks so. GOOD. I swatched it at the counter and my jaw dropped! I’ve never had any Dior lipstick, but that may changed quite fast.

    • Sunny @Mostly Sunny

Thanks so much, Anne! You should try one of these! I also like Addict Extremes, but I feel like I could do with some more pigment during the colder months :)

  • jbrobeck

I love a good moisturizing lipstick! Need to check these out, though I couldn’t pull off that red as well as you!

    • Sunny @Mostly Sunny

Aww thanks! There are many other shades in the line-up though! I’m sure you’ll find something you like :)

  • Kate Driveller

….What are you doing to me, Sunny? I think I like the lipliner :O And I never wear lip liner but it looks like such a good soft-but-not-warm red lip! And I love the texture of it in your excellent pics.

    • murt

It’s funny because I have the older formulation of the Rouge Dior 999 lipstick – from 2011 I think – and it is a very warm tomato red. I’ll have to compare both to see if this new version is cooler toned or not.

      • Sunny @Mostly Sunny

Hey Murt, are you talking about Ara Red? Ara Red looks MUCH more orange from what I can see, but I don’t own it so I’d love to know how they compare!

    • Sunny @Mostly Sunny

Thanks so much, Kate! I don’t use lip liner much either, but it’s handy to have a red one because I find red lipsticks a little higher-maintenance in general 😉

  • Dominique33

The perfect red ( and it looks perfect on you, so does the nail polish ) ! I love it, I agree it’s bright and so classy. I can’t wait to see the new Diorific ones, the Holiday collection is to die for I think !

    • Sunny @Mostly Sunny

Thanks so much, Dominique! I can’t wait to see those, either! Diorling from last year is still one of the lowest-maintenance red lipsticks that I own!

      • Dominique33

Some Diorific are repromotes ( 6 lipsticks ! ), the collection is gorgeous and I think one is close to Diorling ( which I own too^^ ), not quite sure though but all 6 are beautiful, so are the 4 nail polishes ( but I think some are repromotes with a different name ), and the manucure bijou ( Dior caviar manicure, fab in those pretty bottles ).
Golden Winter is my favourite Holiday collection along with the Chanel and the Nars ones, 3 collections I will purchase from :)

        • Sunny @Mostly Sunny

Wheeee I can’t wait! I have high hopes for the Chanel one as well!

  • murt

Wow nice review – I have the old Rouge Dior 999 lipstick – the one from I think 2011. I wonder how this new lipstick compares to the one I have – I’ll have to go swatch them both! The one I have is also quite moisturizing and from the swatches looks similar, but this one might be slightly more cooler toned in colour.

    • Sunny @Mostly Sunny

Hey Murt, I’d love to know how the formulas compare! I THINK the older 999 (Ara Red) is way more orange, but I don’t own it 😉

      • murt

Yes exactly – the one I have is Ara red. I’ll go swatch the new 999 lipstick with my old one to find out – I’ll let you know if the old one is actually more warm! Mine looks very similar to the pictures in Messy Wands’ review of the old formula –

ETA: the new 999 looks absolutely amazing on you though! Very sophisticated look.

        • Sunny @Mostly Sunny

Oh great! I’d love to hear what you think! Thanks, Murt :)

          • murt

Well I went to the Dior counter to swatch the new 999 and interestingly enough the new colour is exactly the same as the old one – they gave me a sample as well to check at home! So I guess the colour just shows up cooler on your skin! It really does look great on you.

I couldn’t resist and I picked up the 999 nail polish while I was there – I think – but I’m not sure – that Revlon Red may be an exact dupe. I’ll have to do alternate nails in each and see if I can tell a difference.

ETA: the new lipstick may be slightly more muted than the old one actually….. But the difference is very very slight if any. I should post pics somewhere.

          • Sunny @Mostly Sunny

Hey Murt, thanks so much for the heads-up! The 999 Vernis has a really impressive formula though! Maybe that alone is a good excuse to hold onto it? 😉

I do think the 999 Rouge Dior will look different on different people, as there are many colors mixed in it. I guess my warm undertone balances the orange out? Hmm.
