So Matte and Bold Is the MAC RiRi Woo Retro Matte Lipstick!

MAC Riri Woo lipstick FOTD

Remember the craze MAC RiRi Woo stirred up several months ago? It was sold out within hours everywhere, leaving many heartbroken. Fear not, my friends, because it’s coming back with the RiRi Hearts MAC Fall Collection! Here in Belgium, it will be available both online and on the counters tomorrow (October 5th. 20 euros). Let’s take a quick look to help you make up your mind!

MAC Riri Woo packaging

MAC RiRi Woo Retro Matte Lipstick comes in a reflective rose gold packaging with Rihanna’s autograph. It feels lighter than regular MAC lipsticks, but it has the signature light vanilla scent all the same. The autograph is also engraved on the bullet.

MAC Riri Woo

MAC RiRi Woo Retro Matte Lipstick is a very cool-toned red with a very matte finish. It is extremely pigmented, and the texture is pretty dry and stiff. When I swatched it for the first time, I was very surprised about the texture (most probably because I had not tried anything so matte, or anything from MAC‘s Retro Matte line). It is not very practical to apply this straight out of the bullet, so you might need some help from a lip brush.

Since the texture is stiff and very pigmented, you need a little patience to pick up the color with a lip brush and trace your lip lines. However, it is precisely because of the texture that RiRi Woo will never ever stray out of your natural lip lines (no lipstick on teeth)! It feels slightly “powdery” on the lips, but not in a bad way. On me, RiRi Woo lasts for 6-7 hours after a full meal and multiple drinks, leaving behind a light stain.

Here is how RiRi Woo swatches. Left: one pass. Right: built up.

Here is how RiRi Woo looks on me:

I’m actually very amazed that such a texture doesn’t actually look dry on the lips, and it is not drying, either. After 6-7 hours, my lips might be very slightly drier than they were before, but that’s about it. The finish is so matte and bold that it practically screams “LOOK AT ME!”

Bottom line: If you want a very matte, cool-toned red lipstick, check out MAC RiRi Woo Retro Matte Lipstick. It might require a little work to put it on, but it is not drying (on me) and it stays in place perfectly well!

Have you tried anything from MAC‘s Retro Matte finish? How about a very matte lipstick? Are you grabbing RiRi Woo, or do you already own it?

such a bold color but it looks perfect on you! did you apply a lipliner before? I have a very nice Bobbi brown matte red lipstick from her last collection (a gift of my cousin) and she really insists on me wearing it but I can’t even pull of Clinique chubby without smudging do you have any suggestions for application of these kind of lipsticks? thanks :)

    • http://mostlysunnyblog.com/ Sunny @Mostly Sunny

Thanks! Nope I applied with a lip brush and that’s all! The texture is so dry that once you get precise lines, it will stay in place! Have you tried a lip brush? That should help!

  • http://makeupmorsels.wordpress.com Makeup Morsels

I LOVE how that texture translates to the lips, and you’re definitely right about it not being for the faint of heart! I was amazed at how quickly this one sold out, haven’t even had a chance to see what it looks like in person yet.

    • http://mostlysunnyblog.com/ Sunny @Mostly Sunny

Hey MM, I heard it’s really not that different from Ruby Woo. Maybe you can check that out instead!

  • http://redhotjillypeppers.com/ Redhotjillypeppers

The matte finish makes it so classy ! Love this colour.

    • http://mostlysunnyblog.com/ Sunny @Mostly Sunny

It’s also very modern in a strange way!

  • beauties

the colour is great but wouldn’t suit me :)

    • http://mostlysunnyblog.com/ Sunny @Mostly Sunny

Oh you should try, Eva! Cool-toned reds look good on pretty much everyone!

  • http://www.colormeloud.com/ Sara_BeauTime

Again you rock red lippies like no one else.
I usually like matte texture on lips but this shade is not something I would wear often. Maybe they release other shades with the same texture…

    • http://mostlysunnyblog.com/ Sunny @Mostly Sunny

Aww thanks so much, Sara! I don’t think I’ll wear it often because it’s much bolder than most reds I own (mattes just seem way bolder I suppose) and it requires some work, but it’d be great for when I want the attention ;)

  • Kate Driveller

You’re so right about the texture actually looking velvety and smooth on the lips! O.o I absolutely love your blush and this entire look. It’s bam! but still very flirty and femme.

    • http://mostlysunnyblog.com/ Sunny @Mostly Sunny

Aww thanks, Kate! The blush is MAC Lovecloud. It’s an ever-so-slightly cool-toned pink!

  • Mariella (Musing on Beauty)

Ah, a matte red is always so beautiful, and you’re rocking it!

    • http://mostlysunnyblog.com/ Sunny @Mostly Sunny

Thanks so much, Mariella! It’s my first really really matte lipstick, but I doubt it’ll be my last!

  • http://www.themistymom.com/ Shari

You are rocking that RIRI WOO lippie, Sunny! I can’t believe I’m not at all ecstatic to purchase because of the dryness levels I’ve experienced with MAC – peeling dry lips! :( I do love that it’s not drying on you, though!! Makes me think twice if I should at least try it on me in the counter.

    • http://mostlysunnyblog.com/ Sunny @Mostly Sunny

Thanks so much, Shari! I heard RiRi Woo is less drying than some others in the Retro Matte line-up, and my lips are fine with it! Maybe prep yours with a bit of lip balm while you’re doing the rest of your makeup?

      • http://www.themistymom.com/ Shari

Oooh I tested it today from my friend who owns it and I do think it wasn’t AT ALL drying than how I’m used to some of MAC’s mattes.. but upon drinking milk tea (my crazy addiction), half the color faded on my lower lip and left an unsightly outline! :( So sad. I did like the color, though!

        • http://mostlysunnyblog.com/ Sunny @Mostly Sunny

Oh no, really? It didn’t do that on me! I love milk tea as well. Maybe I should try that :p

  • Kate Berlin

This is absolutely beautiful on you! I love this shade.

    • http://mostlysunnyblog.com/ Sunny @Mostly Sunny

      Thanks so much, Kate!

  • Icaria

From your description this reminds me of a few Lancôme I had and I must say, loved, especially due to that stay put texture. I wouldn’t wear this color but it looks gorgeous on you, you really wear it well Sunny!

    • http://mostlysunnyblog.com/ Sunny @Mostly Sunny

Thanks, Helene! It’s actually not THAT easy to find really matte lipsticks around. I suppose they’re on the bolder spectrum of things ;)

  • fancie

I just love the way RiRi Woo looks on you! Did you manage to get any of the other lippies from this collection? I think Talk That Talk would look amazing on you!

    • http://mostlysunnyblog.com/ Sunny @Mostly Sunny

Thanks so much, Fancie! Nope I haven’t got the opportunity to check the rest out yet! I do like how Talk the Talk looks, so I’ll have to check it out!

  • Lily

Love this red on you, Sunny! I find MAC lipsticks drying on me, so I’ve stayed away. This colour is va va voom though :-)

    • http://mostlysunnyblog.com/ Sunny @Mostly Sunny

Hey Lily, most of the time you have to sacrifice hydration for a really matte finish, and I definitely thought it’d be more drying than it really is! Fortunately it’s not!

  • Bella

That is the nicest I have ever seen Riri Woo look on anyone. I avoid Mac’s limited edition hypes on principle, though. haha!

    • http://mostlysunnyblog.com/ Sunny @Mostly Sunny

Aww thanks SO much, Bella!!! I heard Ruby Woo is VERY similar. You should give it a go!

  • expatmuaddict

Sunny you look amazing-this colour is totally wow on you! The Retro Matte formula is quite hard to work with from the bullet, I had to use a lip brush for the best result. I didn’t find it drying either which I was expecting it to be!

I haven’t gotten anything from the collection-nothing has wowed me but I haven’t seen it in the flesh. But this is truly gorgeous on you.

    • http://mostlysunnyblog.com/ Sunny @Mostly Sunny

Thanks so much, Stacey! I’m glad it’s not drying on you, either! I’d like to check out the rest of the collection soon. Looks like there are some nice pieces there, even though I really shouldn’t look at more makeup!

  • Marijke

    This looks great on you!

    • http://mostlysunnyblog.com/ Sunny @Mostly Sunny

Thanks so much, Marijke! Cool-toned reds are more universally-flattering I think!

  • TracyBeautyReflections

What a great red on you Sunny!
I’ve had Ruby Woo in the past, and just didn’t wear it as it’s so RED haha. I’m starting to realize that I don’t really wear my red lipsticks that often lol! I might check out the other shades though.

    • http://mostlysunnyblog.com/ Sunny @Mostly Sunny

Thanks so much, Tracy! You should wear reds more often! They are a little more work, but they’re just so glam!

  • http://papayapieces.com/ Sofia

Oh yeah Sunny it looks bold!

    • http://mostlysunnyblog.com/ Sunny @Mostly Sunny

I think it’s the finish! It’s very full-on. There’s no other way to wear this ;)

  • Natalie

This finish is amazing! Its great that it doesn’t dry out your lips too much. It looks beautiful on you.

    • http://mostlysunnyblog.com/ Sunny @Mostly Sunny

Thanks so much, Natalie! Nope my lips were just very slightly drier at the end!

  • Jacqueline Ma

It is a really stunning colour on you Sunny. Hm…. I probably will pass this up because I don’t really like dry and stiff textures.

    • http://mostlysunnyblog.com/ Sunny @Mostly Sunny

Thanks, Jacqueline! I know what you mean. Application is a little more work, but I do like how it’s never going to smear because the texture is so dry!

  • http://buyingcrueltyfree.com/ Catherine

I’m amazed it’s not drying either. You look so dainty and classic with this makeup, something about it reminds me of vintage glamour

    • http://mostlysunnyblog.com/ Sunny @Mostly Sunny

Thanks so much, Catherine! Nope it’s not drying. Maybe very slightly so, but after 6 hours my lips were just fine!

  • http://www.abeautifulzen.blogspot.ca/ jenn @Abeautifulzen

i agree with your comment re: the weight of the packaging. i was /just/ at a MAC actually and noticed how light and plasticy this collection felt as far as packaging goes. i swatched ‘dangerous’ from their retro matte line and it just seemed a little too similar Lady Danger (which i own) that i wanted to skip it. i think that’s my most daring matte lipstick i have. i didn’t take a look at RiRi.

    • http://mostlysunnyblog.com/ Sunny @Mostly Sunny

Yeah it looks good but it doesn’t weigh an awful lot! OOO you have Lady Danger? That shade is also legendary!

  • http://www.pinklavenders.com/ Rainy Days & Lattes

VERY retro :) i really love the look but I can totally imagine it being a little hard to maintain if you’re out and about. But it’s very beautiful!

    • http://mostlysunnyblog.com/ Sunny @Mostly Sunny

Hey Jen, if you use a lip liner it should last really well. I like how it doesn’t move around at all once it’s on!

  • http://jadeinthepalace.blogspot.com/ Cassandrapamela

I always love how MAC lipsticks look on everybody else except myself T.T i always have bad luck with them..
This new limited edition riri woo is a total hype here. you can easily find them in ebay for like 3-4x the price! I found the lipstick for 48€ instead of its 19€ original price..I was like, does it really worth the hype? lol
btw, you look great in red!!!

    • http://mostlysunnyblog.com/ Sunny @Mostly Sunny

Aww maybe you just haven’t found your shade! Even here in Belgium RiRi Woo sold out REALLY fast online, and it’s not usually a country that gets too much into hypes. I suppose she has a big fan base!

  • http://lippylash.blogspot.com lippylash

I absolutely love the packaging! It is probably one of my favorite packages of all times!

    • http://mostlysunnyblog.com/ Sunny @Mostly Sunny

Hey Natasha, I agree: MAC did a great job here!

  • Lucifer

You look flawlessly pretty in it, Sunny. I recently bought Ruby Woo so I didn’t see the point of getting this, considering I’m not a Rihanna fan or even a fan of the packaging.

    • http://mostlysunnyblog.com/ Sunny @Mostly Sunny

Aww thanks so much, girl! If you already have Ruby Woo I think you can let this one pass. They seem too similar to warrant both!

  • ValleyDoll

The packaging is girly and sleek at the same time, really like it. The shade itself isn’t really my thing, although I do love Rihanna with her bold red lips.

    • http://mostlysunnyblog.com/ Sunny @Mostly Sunny

Hey Eva, oh yeah she really owns RiRi Woo in every sense! I like the fact that they did special packaging this time. It gives the collection a bit more extra oomph!

  • http://beautyreductionista.blogspot.ca/ Liz

It’s a stunning red and you wear it well, Sunny! I actually really dig the rose gold packaging of all the things, lol.

    • http://mostlysunnyblog.com/ Sunny @Mostly Sunny

Thanks so much, Liz! I like rose gold as well, though do note I think the permanent lipsticks weigh a bit more than these.

  • http://keepingupwiththekelly.wordpress.com/ Kelly Amanda

Looks great on you! I’m personally not a huge fan of matte lipsticks, they tend to feel very drying.

    • http://mostlysunnyblog.com/ Sunny @Mostly Sunny

Thanks, Kelly! I know what you mean, and that’s why it’s probably not my favorite texture ever. This one really is OK though!

  • http://www.glambunctious.com/ Kristen / Glambunctious

I personally love this bold red on you! I’m not really a red lipstick kinda girl because it’s just SO far out of my normal comfort zone, but this looks very POW! on you – and I love it!

    • http://mostlysunnyblog.com/ Sunny @Mostly Sunny

Thanks so much, Kristen! I don’t wear mattes a lot, but it is a fun texture to work with from time to time :)
