I am not much of a gloss girl, but I do have fond memories of the limited edition MAC Girl About Town Lipglass that came out about a year and a half ago. Man, that shade is all sorts of fun! I like it for the coverage and lasting power, but I can also see why not everybody is on board with the formula. Oh yes, MAC Lipglasses are known to be thick and sticky. I noticed something very different with the relatively new MAC Viva Glam 1 Lipglass: hey, am I dreaming, or is the formula much less sticky nowadays?
Unless MAC is totally new to you, you probably know that they donate very cent of the selling price of MAC Viva Glam Lipsticks and Lipglasses to the MAC AIDS Fund, which is then used to help those who are affected by HIV/AIDS. I wish more companies would do this instead of donating a certain percentage (usually not a big one, either) of the selling price to charitable causes, as evident by the Breast Cancer Awareness Month products that we see everywhere this time of the year.
But where was I? Oh yeah, MAC Viva Glam 1 Lipglass!
MAC Viva Glam 1 Lipglass (17,50 euros in Belgium) is described as am “intense brownish blue-red.” It delivers opaque coverage from the get-go, and it has an amazing glazed finish. The texture is on the thick side, but like what I said in the beginning, I am under the distinct impression that the formula is much less sticky/tacky than before. Still, Viva Glam 1 Lipglass lasts for 4,5 hours on my lips, leaving behind a light stain. Just because the texture is thicker, I was fully anticipating it to smudge and smear with my meal: that didn’t happen! It resisted the meal and a couple more drinks afterwards, leaving behind a light stain. I did see a darker rim around my bottom lip, but it was time to reapply in any case.
Here is how MAC Viva Glam 1 Lipglass swatches. Left: one pass. Right: built up.
Here is how it looks on me:
On my skin tone, the brownish tone is rather visible, but not in an unflattering way. The shade first came out in 1994 with RuPaul as the first face of Viva Glam (Google her! She really is a viva glam girl), and I suppose that’s why there’s some brown in this one. Still, instead of looking dated, I think it’s just classic!
Bottom line: If you have avoided MAC Lipglasses because of the sticky/tacky texture, you might be pleasantly surprised with MAC Viva Glam 1 Lipglass! I shared my observation on Twitter, and apparently I am not alone in observing this positive change in the formula. Hopefully MAC is going to phase out the old formula and make all the Lipglasses less sticky like this one! It is still on the thicker side, but it lasts well and stays put. I also like the glazed finish!
Have you tried any MAC Lipglasses recently? Are you digging the original Viva Glam 1?
