Am I Dreaming, Or Are MAC Lipglasses Less Sticky Nowadays? MAC Viva Glam 1 Lipglass

MAC Viva Glam 1 Lipglass FOTD

I am not much of a gloss girl, but I do have fond memories of the limited edition MAC Girl About Town Lipglass that came out about a year and a half ago. Man, that shade is all sorts of fun! I like it for the coverage and lasting power, but I can also see why not everybody is on board with the formula. Oh yes, MAC Lipglasses are known to be thick and sticky. I noticed something very different with the relatively new MAC Viva Glam 1 Lipglass: hey, am I dreaming, or is the formula much less sticky nowadays?

Unless MAC is totally new to you, you probably know that they donate very cent of the selling price of MAC Viva Glam Lipsticks and Lipglasses to the MAC AIDS Fund, which is then used to help those who are affected by HIV/AIDS. I wish more companies would do this instead of donating a certain percentage (usually not a big one, either) of the selling price to charitable causes, as evident by the Breast Cancer Awareness Month products that we see everywhere this time of the year.

But where was I? Oh yeah, MAC Viva Glam 1 Lipglass!

MAC Lipglass applicator

MAC Viva Glam 1 Lipglass (17,50 euros in Belgium) is described as am “intense brownish blue-red.” It delivers opaque coverage from the get-go, and it has an amazing glazed finish. The texture is on the thick side, but like what I said in the beginning, I am under the distinct impression that the formula is much less sticky/tacky than before. Still, Viva Glam 1 Lipglass lasts for 4,5 hours on my lips, leaving behind a light stain. Just because the texture is thicker, I was fully anticipating it to smudge and smear with my meal: that didn’t happen! It resisted the meal and a couple more drinks afterwards, leaving behind a light stain. I did see a darker rim around my bottom lip, but it was time to reapply in any case.

Here is how MAC Viva Glam 1 Lipglass swatches. Left: one pass. Right: built up.

Here is how it looks on me:

MAC Viva Glam 1 Lipglass review

Laura Mercier Sandglow Caviar Stick, Bobbi Brown Sable EOTD

On my skin tone, the brownish tone is rather visible, but not in an unflattering way. The shade first came out in 1994 with RuPaul as the first face of Viva Glam (Google her! She really is a viva glam girl), and I suppose that’s why there’s some brown in this one. Still, instead of looking dated, I think it’s just classic!

Bottom line: If you have avoided MAC Lipglasses because of the sticky/tacky texture, you might be pleasantly surprised with MAC Viva Glam 1 Lipglass! I shared my observation on Twitter, and apparently I am not alone in observing this positive change in the formula. Hopefully MAC is going to phase out the old formula and make all the Lipglasses less sticky like this one! It is still on the thicker side, but it lasts well and stays put. I also like the glazed finish!

Have you tried any MAC Lipglasses recently? Are you digging the original Viva Glam 1?

You totally rock reds!!! Love this on you. I bought the Viva Glam 1 lipstick, I wonder if jt’s similar in shade to the gloss?

    • Sunny @Mostly Sunny

Thanks so much, Stacey! Theoretically it’s the same shade!

  • TracyBeautyReflections

Viva Glam 1 is one of my faves. I love RuPaul. Guess I should get the lip glass hey? :)
    Looks great on you Sunny!

    • Sunny @Mostly Sunny

Hey Tracy, so yaaay you’ve got a lipglass to go with your lipstick now! A non-sticky one on top of that!

  • Redhotjillypeppers

This is a very pretty shade ! I’m not a fan of sticky lip products so maybe I’ll give The new formula a try.

    • Sunny @Mostly Sunny

This is really not something I’d describe as sticky! You should check it out!

  • beauties

oooooh love this colour :) looks great on you! I think it would look good on me too

    • Sunny @Mostly Sunny

Hey Eva, I know you wear brown well so you should definitely give this one a try!

  • Kiss & Make-up

I hope you’re not dreaming 😀 Stickiness is one of the major reasons I usually stay away from lip gloss.

    • Sunny @Mostly Sunny

I’m probably not! I’ve been told the same thing on Twitter a couple of times now. I have no idea what’s happening with the existing shades yet, but this one and the new LE ones are said to be less sticky.

  • Icaria

This is super pretty on you! I’ve been thinking about getting this one but oh is it punchy! Hmm maybe, we’ll see. :)

    • Sunny @Mostly Sunny

Thanks so much, Helene! You should try it on to see how you feel!

  • Catherine

I’ve actually never tried a MAC lip glass, but I do love glossy reds. For everyday, they’re my favorite way to wear red, since they don’t require as much maintenance as most red lipsticks

    • Sunny @Mostly Sunny

Hey Catherine, most red lipsticks I own are actually pretty low-maintenance! This one is amazing because it doesn’t smear or smudge. On top of that it’s nicely pigmented!

  • Larie

I hope it’s different, lol. The original MAC lipglass formula kills me. SO. SO. STICKY.

    • Sunny @Mostly Sunny

      LOL try this on then!

  • Liz

I was planning to pick this up eventually. I’m in the minority that didn’t think even the old Lipglasses were that bad because I finished quite a few back in the day. Haven’t touched one since the To The Beach collection though!

    • Sunny @Mostly Sunny

Hey Liz, I was OK with the old formula because it lasts well, but I’m not a gloss girl to begin with so I never wore it often. If you pick this one up, I’d like to know what you think!

  • Sara_BeauTime

This must have been one of my favorite looks of you. I love the eye liner and this gloss together, and the blush. All together creates a very sophisticated, timeless look.

    • Sunny @Mostly Sunny

      Aww thanks, Sara!

  • Bella

Such a pretty colour on you. I must have tried one Lipglass somewhere in the 90’s, and never have again due to the fact that I hate when my hair sticks to my mouth. And EVERYTHING stuck to my mouth. If I ever approach a Mac counter again, i shall try the new formula :).

  • Whitney

I got a lipglass as a party favour once, and I used it once and never went back. I might go check out MAC sometime, I still have yet to own one of their lipsticks! You look so great in red!!

    • Sunny @Mostly Sunny

Hey Whitney, I always get so lost in MAC stores with their HUGE selections! You should go check it out. You mind find something unexpected!

  • Krystle Kouture

I usually stick to the Dazzleglasses becauseI find them less sticky. If they’ve changed lipglasses I wouldn’t mind trying them again as most of the LEs seem to be glasses!

    • Sunny @Mostly Sunny

Hey Krystle, I feel the difference and I hope you will, too!

  • Sofia

Hmmm interesting.. but is it moisturizing? (being moisturizing at the same time is my all time lip product obsession).

    • Sunny @Mostly Sunny

Hey Sofia, it’s lightly moisturizing! I do have an obsession with moisturizing lip products as well 😉

      • Sofia

ok thanks Sunny, thats good to know!

  • Kristen / Glambunctious

I lurve this on you! The slight brown tinge makes it look sophisticated and classic.

    • Sunny @Mostly Sunny

Thanks so much, Kristen! RBR makes the most interesting shades indeed!

  • Shari

Really?! Could it be?! MAC’s lip glasses are the reason I hated lip glosses so I dont even have one lipgloss in my stash :O

I loooove Viva Glam 1 the lipstick, for a time then it was the only red I wore. this lipglass absolutely looks great on you!

    • Sunny @Mostly Sunny

Hey Shari, I’m not a gloss girl either, but the formula of this one really isn’t as sticky as MAC lipglasses used to be! I’ll have to look into the lipstick now!

  • Teresa Laura

That’s amazing to hear! I’ve always loved the shades of MAC lip glosses, but hated the stickiness! I’ll have to give this one a try. I’m not really a gloss girl myself, which is why I have become so obsessed with YSL Glossy Stains….they are amazing – perfect combo of pigment, gloss, and shine :)

    xo – Teresa (

    • Sunny @Mostly Sunny

Hey Teresa, I still haven’t tried a YSL Glossy Stain if you can believe it! I don’t really know why, but I am very old school when it comes to lipsticks so perhaps it’s that!

  • Tiffany

I LOVE this shade of red on you, Sunny! It suits you so well! I tend to stay away from lipglasses due to the stickiness, but I’m glad to hear the formula may be improved now!

    • Sunny @Mostly Sunny

Thanks so much, Tiffany! This is definitely much less sticky!

  • Kelly Amanda

This shade looks amazing on you! So classy and elegant.

    • Sunny @Mostly Sunny

Thanks so much, Kelly! You should check it out!

      • Kelly Amanda

Well you saw my latest post, I’m trying to use up some products before I buy new ones. I’m trying to wait for the holiday collections, I’ve already seen some amazing things, especially the MAC holiday collection looks great this year. Are you planning on getting anything from that collection?

        • Sunny @Mostly Sunny

Hey Kelly, since we always get MAC much later here, I’m going to sit around and read some reviews before I make up my mind! I get what you mean with the holiday collections as well. I can’t wait for them to finally roll out here!

  • Isabelle

Looking stunning here, Sunny! And in regards to the stickiness.. I have one motto: the less sticky the gloss, the better. Whoever invented sticky glosses did NOT rock long hair!

    • Sunny @Mostly Sunny

Thanks, Isabelle! I can put up with stickiness a little better if the gloss lasts really well, but you’re right about the long hair. The fact that it’s a windy country doesn’t help, either!

  • Lily

I love this shade on you, Sunny! I don’t think the brown is too apparent and even that, I think it’s flattering :-)

    • Sunny @Mostly Sunny

Thanks so much, Lily! You can see it’s not quite as bright, but it is indeed a nice shade!
