Remember when I said powder foundation is getting big? Another good example would be the new Chanel Vitalumière Compact Douceur. Most of you have probably heard of the cream compact version (Vitalumière Aqua Cream Compact), but Vitalumière Compact Douceur is brand new and it is a powder foundation instead!
Chanel Vitalumière Compact Douceur Lightweight Compact Makeup Radiance Softness and Comfort (phew! That is one long name! It is already available in Belgium. RRP: 53 euros) comes in a black velvet pouch. It has SPF 10, which is a nice bonus but not sufficient on its own (it’s the same story with every base product though).
The compact opens to the foundation and a sponge. You can buy the refill separately (RRP in Belgium: 40,50 euros), and the sponge washes up pretty well. Still, sooner or later I’ll have to figure our where I can find a sponge with the same size to replace it!
The shade I received is 40 Beige. Normally I should be 30 in Chanel foundations (NC 25), and I wouldn’t encourage you to go a shade up in most cases. However, 40 works fine for the moment, and I suppose I won’t have to stop using it till all my summer color is gone. It is slightly more beige and darker for my skin tone, but for the most part it passes as a match. There are two reasons for this. First of all, I find that powder foundations are more forgiving in terms of shade selection. Second, my face is lighter than the rest of my body, including my neck. A little extra warmth like is always appreciated, though I never intentionally go for a darker foundation. Other shades available in Belgium include Beige Rosé 12, 22, and 32 as well as Beige 30 and 50.
Chanel Vitalumière Compact Douceur is lightly rose-scented. The texture is beyond finely-milled, as it feels positively creamy. It feels lightweight on the skin, and I would say it offers light to medium coverage depending on how you apply it (for light coverage use a kabuki brush, for medium coverage use the sponge). As it is with any foundation, don’t get greedy. You will have a hard time making this look cakey even if you try, but you might end up with more glow than you bargain for!
You can see some silver in the closeup, but it doesn’t contain shimmer. Once it goes on, it transform the skin into something smooth and glowy. Chanel Vitalumière Compact Douceur isn’t picky about having cream products layered on top, so feel free to use a cream blush if you want to. However, I still think it’s a good idea to conceal first. Since the finish of the powder is most probably different from your concealer, you don’t want the patches that are supposed to be concealed end up looking different and more obvious! It has pretty good lasting power on its own, but you might still benefit from a primer.
Here is how Chanel Vitalumière Compact Douceur Beige 40 swatches:
Despite the glowy finish, Chanel Vitalumière Compact Douceur does not make my T-zone grease up faster. If you have oilier skin, I would advise you to avoid other glow-enhancing products (primer, highlighter, or blushes that have a high shimmer content). I would say the glow looks mostly very natural. Don’t imagine you will walk around with your face like a light bulb. That’s not going to happen. The illuminating effect is visible on the high points of the face, or when you turn your face.
You have seen Chanel Vitalumière Compact Douceur on me in these looks:
Doesn’t it look like a soft halo (I skipped highlighter. There is really no need for that)? Have you imagined a power foundation could have such a glowy finish?
Here is the ingredient list if anyone is interested:
Bottom line: If you like glowy foundations, you’re in luck: Chanel Vitalumière Compact Douceur delivers a soft glow that you will love. I would recommend this to drier and normal skin types. Those with combination skin (like myself) might need an oil-controlling primer in the T-zone to avoid looking too shiny too soon, and those with oilier skin might want to at least use a light hand. However, It doesn’t make your skin grease up faster per se, nor does it look bad once your natural sebum starts breaking through. This formula works well with cream textures layered on top, and it wears well on its own.
The season for glow-enhancing products is back! I avoid them like snakes in summer, but when my skin looks dull and gray in the coming months, I’ll be happy to welcome them back in my life!
