Many of you might know that due to my clumsiness and limited patience, nail art isn’t my thing. I enjoy seeing nail art on others, but even layering a glittery top coat over my nail polish is too much work in my book. Also, it is basically against every fiber of my being to have to bust out a whole bunch of products for a manicure. Well, The New Black heard me, and they have transformed nail art into something tidy and simple!
The New Black is a Dutch brand that offers nifty manicure sets (you have no idea how giddy it makes me feel to be able to pop every shade I need for a manicure back into the same box. Neat freaks should know what I’m talking about, or at least so I hope!). You can find nail trends from newspaper nails to ombre on their site. Each shade contains 4ml (0.125 oz). While it is not a lot, you should have more than enough in each set till you are tired of that certain manicure! I have an ombre set called Waves, a newspaper set called Daily News, and a neon set called Tabloid Sensations to show you today!
Waves (29,95 euros) is a blue/teal ombre set. I really like the fact that it contains different finishes, from a regular crème to something glittery. It looks almost as if I just happened to have these nail polishes and I put the manicure together myself!
The lightest shade is a robin-egg blue with a crème finish. The consistency is a bit thin and runny, so it pools around my cuticle a little. However, it does cover well with two coats. The second lightest shade is a shimmery teal. I can still see a bit of my nail line with two coats, but other than that I have no complaint! The middle shade is a shimmery teal green that is easy to work with. The second darkest shade is a glittery teal-blue. While I never have the taste/patience for glittery nail polishes on their own, it is fun to try one in a set! The darkest shade is a mid-to-dark blue teal crème. This one is almost opaque with one coat, and the consistency is excellent!
Voila, ombre nails with no fuss!
The second set is called Daily News. I have actually attempted a newspaper manicure some years back (those Youtube tutorials make it look so easy) and failed miserably. I am still not sure if it’s because I didn’t hold the piece of newspaper on my nail for long enough, but in any case it wasn’t my best manicure memory.
Daily News (24,95 euros) comes with an off-white nail polish (as base), a roll of “newspaper,” a transfer solution (swabbing alcohol if I am not mistaken), and a top coat. The steps are simple. First, you paint your nails with a coat of the base color. It is a little streaky and uneven, but it will smooth out at the end. Once it is completely dry, cut off a piece of the newspaper. Paint one nail with the transfer solution before holding the newspaper side down on the nail for about 30 seconds. Remove it and repeat on every nail (with a new piece of newspaper, of course). Give the transfer solution a moment to dry before going over with a top coat.
There are two tips I would like to add here. First of all, the instructions in the box only tell you to put the transfer solution on the nail. I tried that first, and I kept ending up with paper fiber stuck on my nails. After checking out the tutorial on their site, I realized the transfer solution has to be put on the newspaper as well. Once I figured that out, it was simple! Second, when you apply the top coat, try to use as little pressure as possible. Instead of pressing the brush down, let it “glide” instead. Otherwise, your print might end up smudgy!
I pressed down too hard with the top coat when I painted my index finger. As you can see, the print is not as neat. The rest turned out OK though!
I’m saving the best for last with the Subculture Contempotary Neons in Tabloid Sensations (13,95 euros)!
There is a whole slew of color combinations available, and I actually see myself wearing a lot of them! Tabloid Sensations include an orange coral with gold shimmer, and a berry with a wax paper finish: how cool is that?
Both formulas are easy to work with, and honestly, I think we have a winner here for the price! You can either mix and match, or just use one shade on all the nails. Either way, this set won’t disappoint you!
The berry is the only nail polish I own for the moment that has this wax paper finish, and I really do love it!
Did you see anything you like here? I think The New Black is perfect for compulsively neat people as well as those who normally can’t be bothered with nail art. Being both, I am digging the concept big time! The quality of each shade differs, but nothing is a real dud for me here. It’s just some fuss-free nail art fun!
PS: For you North American peeps. The New Black is available on Sephora with a much lower price (VAT is such a killjoy) and smaller selection.
