It feels a little surreal sitting here writing the last post for 2013. Is it the end of another year already? Before we can officially see it off with style, here is a quick look of a few of my favorite things in 2013, both beauty- and non-beauty-related:
1. Favorite/Most-Used Eyeshadows: Laura Mercier Carviar Sticks
Last year I was way obsessed with cream eyeshadows, but this year I found something even more convenient: eyeshadow sticks! I’ve tried several formulas, but Laura Mercier Caviar Sticks remain my personal favorites. They don’t have the most impressive lasting power (though some primer and maybe pressed shadow later, they also wear like iron), but the nuance in the shades make them special! I have Sand Glow, Grey Pearl, and Khaki in my collection so far. I’m pretty sure I will eventually get more!
2. Favorite New Lipstick Formula: Dior Rouge Dior
There are many lipstick formulas I continue to love, but my best discovery this year has to be Dior Rouge Dior. They are so incredibly moisturizing and buttery! I have written about Darling, 999, Trafalgar, Grège 1947, and Mazette. 4 new shades will be available in the Dior Trianon Collection for spring 2014. I can’t wait!
3. Favorite Finishing Powders: Guerlain Crazy Météorites Radiance Powder & Guerlain Les Voilettes Translucent Compact Powder
Guerlain makes several different finishing powders. Whether you want something more mattifying or illuminating, the brand has you covered. I love Les Voilettes Translucent Compact Powder on my T-zone to delay that shine, and Crazy Météorites Radiance Powder on the rest of my face for some incredible brightening action. Best finishing touch ever!
4. Favorite/Most-Used Blushes: Chanel Le Blush Crème de Chanel
Prior to 2013, I didn’t really see myself ever favoring cream blushes to their powder counterparts, then Chanel Le Blush Crème de Chanel came along and everything changed! These densely-pigmented, highly-blendable, and long-lasting cream blushes are everything good blushes should be. I have Présage, Affinité, and Inspiration so far, and I am really excited about both Chamade and Intonation that are coming out next spring!
5. Best Skincare Discovery: Omorovicza
Not an awful lot has changed in my skincare routine this year. but I did discover Omorovicza! I can assure you the Hungary-based luxury skincare brand is not just a hype: it works miracles! My can’t-live-without Omorovicza products include their Thermal Cleansing Balm, Deep Cleansing Mask, and Copper Peel. I have stocked up during their Black Friday sale. Hopefully my supply will last me till the next big sale!
6. New Staple in My Cabinet: Estee Lauder Advanced Night Repair
In all honesty I tend to be very skeptical about skincare products from most big luxury brands. I don’t get along with the overdose of fragrance commonly found in these products, and the ridiculous percentage of filler ingredients makes me want to roll my eyes all the way back in my skull. Estee Lauder Advanced Night Repair Eye Serum Infusion and Synchronized Recovery Complex II manage to avoid both pitfalls. They don’t produce instant miracles for me, but every day they seem to make my skin just another bit healthier and more hydrated!
7. Holy Grail Brow Filler Discovered: Hourglass Soft Brunette Arch Brow Sculpting Pencil
I can’t pretend my lifelong brow complex has been cured by Hourglass Soft Brunette Arch Brow Sculpting Pencil, but it has certainly played a big part in reducing it. It has the perfect color, shape, and consistency for my naturally very sparse eyebrows. I included it in my 6-product face, but if I could choose only one product on any given day, this would be the one!
8. Dior Spring Ball Addict Extreme
Granted there is probably nothing revolutionary about the color or the formula, if I had to stick to one lipstick for the rest of my life, or if I were walking down the aisle tomorrow, I wouldn’t hesitate to pick Dior Spring Ball Addict Extreme. Heck, I take that back. I’d pretty much happily MARRY this lipstick! There is just something about this shade that cheers me up and makes me look a lot better whatever other makeup (or rather lack of makeup) I have on my face. You have seen it used and abused in this look, this look, and this look.
Talk about walking down the aisle, that is happening in my near future! I got engaged this year, and for the moment Dr. D is cooking up a celebration for our 3-year anniversary of the official first date (sometime in January). My biggest achievement for the past 3 years is probably converting him to Catism. You’re on the right path, pal!
10. The Whiskered Inhabitants of the Mostly Sunny Headquarters
I met this homeless tabby in my neighborhood around Easter. She is such a sweetie, and she had such a bad respiratory infection that I didn’t want to leave her on the street. It took quite a while for that to clear up, and she had several tests over the period of 2 months to prove she is FIV- (like HIV for cats) negative. For the moment Kissa is still hanging around the Mostly Sunny headquarters. I would be happy if she could find a new home, but I don’t mind keeping such a cuddly lap cat to be honest! Kissa has taught me never to feel sorry for myself. From the moment we took her in, I could see that she was just so content with her new life that she wasn’t hanging onto any of the bad memories. If human beings had the same capacity, we’d be so much happier!
Both Muffin and Tango had a minor surgery this year (Muffin managed to get some grass stuck in her larynx, and Tango had a wart on his back that needed to be removed). All is well otherwise, and to that I am very grateful.
11. The Trips
Besides an unexpected work trip to Cannes, I went home for a second time this year for my grandmother’s 90th birthday celebration. I can be so homebound and tied up with the little things of everyday life. Trips definitely remind me that there is a way bigger world out there!
12. The New Camera
I have finally graduated from point-and-shoots and system cameras to a real DSLR (Canon 650D)! The only bad thing I can say about it is the fact that I don’t always want to carry it around, but otherwise I have been thoroughly amazed by what it can do! I don’t think I’ll ever get good at photography, but nowadays sometimes I look at my work and think “hey, it’s not all that bad!”
This pretty much concludes 2013 for me. Have a good one seeing it off with style, and see you in 2014!
