Those Are a Few of My Favorite Things in 2013!

2013 in review

It feels a little surreal sitting here writing the last post for 2013. Is it the end of another year already? Before we can officially see it off with style, here is a quick look of a few of my favorite things in 2013, both beauty- and non-beauty-related:

Laura Mercier Caviar Sticks collection 2013

1. Favorite/Most-Used EyeshadowsLaura Mercier Carviar Sticks

Last year I was way obsessed with cream eyeshadows, but this year I found something even more convenient: eyeshadow sticks! I’ve tried several formulas, but Laura Mercier Caviar Sticks remain my personal favorites. They don’t have the most impressive lasting power (though some primer and maybe pressed shadow later, they also wear like iron), but the nuance in the shades make them special! I have Sand Glow, Grey Pearl, and Khaki in my collection so far. I’m pretty sure I will eventually get more!

Dior Rouge Diors

2. Favorite New Lipstick Formula: Dior Rouge Dior

There are many lipstick formulas I continue to love, but my best discovery this year has to be Dior Rouge Dior. They are so incredibly moisturizing and buttery! I have written about Darling, 999, TrafalgarGrège 1947, and Mazette. 4 new shades will be available in the Dior Trianon Collection for spring 2014. I can’t wait!

Guerlain finishing powders round-up

3. Favorite Finishing Powders: Guerlain Crazy Météorites Radiance Powder & Guerlain Les Voilettes Translucent Compact Powder

Guerlain makes several different finishing powders. Whether you want something more mattifying or illuminating, the brand has you covered. I love Les Voilettes Translucent Compact Powder on my T-zone to delay that shine, and Crazy Météorites Radiance Powder on the rest of my face for some incredible brightening action. Best finishing touch ever!

Chanel (62) Presage, (64) Inspiration, (65) Affinite Le Blush Creme de Chanel

4. Favorite/Most-Used BlushesChanel Le Blush Crème de Chanel

Prior to 2013, I didn’t really see myself ever favoring cream blushes to their powder counterparts, then Chanel Le Blush Crème de Chanel came along and everything changed! These densely-pigmented, highly-blendable, and long-lasting cream blushes are everything good blushes should be. I have PrésageAffinité, and Inspiration so far, and I am really excited about both Chamade and Intonation that are coming out next spring!

Omorovicza Copper Peel, Thermal Cleansing Balm, Deep Cleansing Mask

5. Best Skincare Discovery: Omorovicza

Not an awful lot has changed in my skincare routine this year. but I did discover Omorovicza! I can assure you the Hungary-based luxury skincare brand is not just a hype: it works miracles! My can’t-live-without Omorovicza products include their Thermal Cleansing Balm, Deep Cleansing Mask, and Copper Peel. I have stocked up during their Black Friday sale. Hopefully my supply will last me till the next big sale!

Estee Lauder new Advanced Night Repair

6. New Staple in My Cabinet: Estee Lauder Advanced Night Repair

In all honesty I tend to be very skeptical about skincare products from most big luxury brands. I don’t get along with the overdose of fragrance commonly found in these products, and the ridiculous percentage of filler ingredients makes me want to roll my eyes all the way back in my skull. Estee Lauder Advanced Night Repair Eye Serum Infusion and Synchronized Recovery Complex II manage to avoid both pitfalls. They don’t produce instant miracles for me, but every day they seem to make my skin just another bit healthier and more hydrated!

Hourglass Arch Brow Sculpting Pencil

7. Holy Grail Brow Filler Discovered: Hourglass Soft Brunette Arch Brow Sculpting Pencil

I can’t pretend my lifelong brow complex has been cured by Hourglass Soft Brunette Arch Brow Sculpting Pencil, but it has certainly played a big part in reducing it. It has the perfect color, shape, and consistency for my naturally very sparse eyebrows. I included it in my 6-product face, but if I could choose only one product on any given day, this would be the one!

LMdB Coral Nymph, Dior Spring Ball Addict Extreme

8. Dior Spring Ball Addict Extreme

Granted there is probably nothing revolutionary about the color or the formula, if I had to stick to one lipstick for the rest of my life, or if I were walking down the aisle tomorrow, I wouldn’t hesitate to pick Dior Spring Ball Addict Extreme. Heck, I take that back. I’d pretty much happily MARRY this lipstick! There is just something about this shade that cheers me up and makes me look a lot better whatever other makeup (or rather lack of makeup) I have on my face. You have seen it used and abused in this look, this look, and this look.

engagement ring9. That Bling

Talk about walking down the aisle, that is happening in my near future! I got engaged this year, and for the moment Dr. D is cooking up a celebration for our 3-year anniversary of the official first date (sometime in January). My biggest achievement for the past 3 years is probably converting him to Catism. You’re on the right path, pal!

kitties 2013

10. The Whiskered Inhabitants of the Mostly Sunny Headquarters

I met this homeless tabby in my neighborhood around Easter. She is such a sweetie, and she had such a bad respiratory infection that I didn’t want to leave her on the street. It took quite a while for that to clear up, and she had several tests over the period of 2 months to prove she is FIV- (like HIV for cats) negative. For the moment Kissa is still hanging around the Mostly Sunny headquarters. I would be happy if she could find a new home, but I don’t mind keeping such a cuddly lap cat to be honest! Kissa has taught me never to feel sorry for myself. From the moment we took her in, I could see that she was just so content with her new life that she wasn’t hanging onto any of the bad memories. If human beings had the same capacity, we’d be so much happier!

Both Muffin and Tango had a minor surgery this year (Muffin managed to get some grass stuck in her larynx, and Tango had a wart on his back that needed to be removed). All is well otherwise, and to that I am very grateful.

trips 2013

11. The Trips

Besides an unexpected work trip to Cannes, I went home for a second time this year for my grandmother’s 90th birthday celebration. I can be so homebound and tied up with the little things of everyday life. Trips definitely remind me that there is a way bigger world out there!

new camera

12. The New Camera

I have finally graduated from point-and-shoots and system cameras to a real DSLR (Canon 650D)! The only bad thing I can say about it is the fact that I don’t always want to carry it around, but otherwise I have been thoroughly amazed by what it can do! I don’t think I’ll ever get good at photography, but nowadays sometimes I look at my work and think “hey, it’s not all that bad!”

This pretty much concludes 2013 for me. Have a good one seeing it off with style, and see you in 2014!

Sunny, your beauty culture translator xx

  • Kate Driveller

Dude, if YOU’re not good at photography… *deletes blog* D:

I am quite proud of my stalking of you this year — I guessed pretty much every product that made it to your favourites list and felt rewarded by kitties and a family photo at the end, lol 😀

    • Sunny @Mostly Sunny

LOL ahhh come on, Kate :p

Thanks SO much for reading my blog! I’ve been stalking you for a long time, and it’s great that we got to connect with each other! <3 May 2014 be a great one for you!

  • Redhotjillypeppers

I really should give that browser pencil a try !

    • Sunny @Mostly Sunny

Hey Jill, yeah I rave about that one all the time. I was actually surprised to find out I’ve only been using it for about a year. It feels it’s been my BFF for much longer!

  • ValleyDoll

Must have the hourglass brow pencil ! It looks soo convenient ! I wish you an even better 2014 than 2013 already was 😉 ! We must meet some time :-) ! x

    • Sunny @Mostly Sunny

Hey Eva, oh yeah it is very user-friendly, especially if you practically have to draw on a pair of brows like I do :p

Happy new year to you too! I hope we’ll get to meet sometime soon!

  • Sofia

I have to say that I haven’t tried some of the formulas you have here so if you say they are you favourites of 2013, that is something and I should! Enjoy your soon to be wedding, and no wonder you have converted him to catism, they are soooo adorable! Oh and I love your camera! Mine has a lens problem now, it comes with the series apparently. After the holidays I’ll be seeing hot Fuji will fix it.
Ok, too much rambling from me. Happy New Year Sunny!

    • Sunny @Mostly Sunny

Hey Sofia, if you do give any of these a go, I hope you’ll enjoy them as much as I do! Dr. D started out not really knowing how to be around cats. I still wouldn’t call him an expert, but he’s getting better!

I hope Fuji will fix your camera soon! I actually know nothing about cameras/lenses. One of my brothers is a bit of a pro, so he basically put my camera together for me and it’s been working well :) Happy new year to you too, Sofia! So glad I discovered your blog this year!

  • Sara_BeauTime

I love your favorites list and the photos of the kitties. They are so cute. Dior’s formula is really very hydrating, wish I could find a nice nude in there. Caviar sticks are totally winners in my book too. Have a nice 2014, will be following your blog next year too :-)

    • Sunny @Mostly Sunny

Thanks so much, Sara! May 2014 be a fruitful one for you as well! I think there are some nudes in the line-up, but they look a bit too beige for me and maybe for you as well. We can keep hoping though!

  • Kiss & Make-up

Yeeees those Chanel blushes, ooooh! And I am totally with you on the ANR serums, they’re really miracle workers. Have a happy new year, Sunny!

    • Sunny @Mostly Sunny

Hey Melissa, happy new year to you too! Definitely try ONE of these Chanel blushes when you can. I try not to collect too many, since cream blushes do expire faster than their powder counterparts. However, the stellar formula and great shades keep temping me!

  • Lynnrv

Love your blogs! Happy New Year and Congratulations on your engagement!

    • Sunny @Mostly Sunny

Aww thanks so much, girly! <3 I hope 2014 will be a great one for you, too!

  • Liz

Happy new year, Sunny! Hope 2014 brings many more good things. 😀

    • Sunny @Mostly Sunny

Happy new year to you too, Liz! xx

  • Lily

Happy New Year Sunny :-) I’m still using my Canon G12 and was thinking about changing it to 650D last year. However, I decided only to get it when my G12 dies. I mean, my pictures aren’t that bad, and DSLRs are just really bulky. No more point and shoot FOTDs – have to bring out my tripods and stuff. LOL!
Hope you have a great new years and that 2014 will be awesome!

    • Sunny @Mostly Sunny

Happy new year to you too, Lily! Yeah I see your point. Your pics are great! I actually think if I lived somewhere with an abundance of natural light, I might not have had to switch to a DSLR.

  • TracyBeautyReflections

Happy New Year Sunny! Love your faves! I should get a Chanel Cream blush, hey? :)

    • Sunny @Mostly Sunny

Happy new year to you too, Tracy! Yeah I’m saying you’ll like the formula! I actually have a hard time imagining who might NOT!

  • Jenny

Happy New Year Sunny! Congratulations on your engagement! I wish you all the best in the next year and in your future. Love the kitties!

    • Sunny @Mostly Sunny

Happy new year, Jenny! Thank you so much :) I hope you’ll have a great one as well!

  • rachlovespenguins

Lovely list and a very Happy New Year!
ps- Chamade and Intonation are already on my 2014 wish list. :)

    • Sunny @Mostly Sunny

Thanks, Rach! You have a GREAT one as well! Intonation is pretty much already on my SHOPPING list. I want to swatch Chamade before I make up my mind. I never used to like pink much till this year, but actually out of the 3 Chanel cream blushes I own, I use Affinite the most. It goes with pinks, it goes with plums, and it goes with berries. Plus it’s also very cheerful!

  • Larie

I need to try the EL Night Repair stuff. I also need to write a round-up post, LOL. But I’m lazy.

I agree – if humans could take that “live in the moment” ability of dogs and cats, I think we’d be much happier in the long run. Having Dennison around reminds me of that. Happy new year, Sunny!

    • Sunny @Mostly Sunny

Haha I just saw that you ended up doing it! Happy new year, Larie!

Yes, give ANR a go. I had no idea what the hoopla was all about till I tried it! I have fished several kitties from the street (Tango was a day old when I found him. Some of them didn’t make it, and some of them found new homes). but Kissa was the first one that wasn’t baby baby anymore when I found her. Still, she is not marked by the bad experience at all. which I find absolutely amazing.

  • jenn @Abeautifulzen

happy new years sunny! im glad to have found your blog and to connect with you this year. living in the moment is defs something the bf is good at but not me. my mind is alwasy going a mile a minute and planning for things way in advance. need to learn how to slow it all down :)

    • Sunny @Mostly Sunny

Happy new year, Jenn! The same goes to you!

I wouldn’t say I’m good at living in the moment either, but I can practice :p

  • Replica

    Happy new year 😉
I really enjoyed this post, great array of products (I will have to pick up the Dior Spring Ball lipstick) and that camera looks really fancy, I need to get a proper one like that but putting down a hefty amount of money on one pains me so 😉

    • Sunny @Mostly Sunny

Thanks, Clare! A camera is quite a bit of an investment, but it’s so much fun to play with! I hope you’ll like Spring Ball as much as I do, if you decide to give it a go :)

  • Natasja

I love that dior lipstick. Looked at the previous article.. and just.. wow! Also, congratulations on your engagement :) Figured out when the big day is?

    • Sunny @Mostly Sunny

Hey Natasja, the new Rouge Dior has a very solid formula, and probably by far the most moisturizing one on me! We’re still trying to figure all the papers out. It’s going to be small, but hopefully sometime this summer!

      • Natasja

well, I hope it is going to be a warm summery day. ban the rain! :)

  • birtegovarts

Oh lalala, congrats on your engagement!

    • Sunny @Mostly Sunny

Thanks so much, girl! Have a great 2014! xx

  • Icaria

Funny Cat & I just watched The Sound of Music! Of all these my faves are the kitties, the new camera and the bling! Our fur babies have been godsends this year! Have a great 2014 Sunny! xoxo

    • Sunny @Mostly Sunny

Thanks, Helene! I hope you and Cat will have a great year as well! xx

  • lola

Happy New Year, Sunny! Congratulations on getting engaged– I am so happy for you! I love your favorite product picks for 2013!! I have yet to review my Chanel Le Blush Crème de Chanel in Inspiration, but I love it so much that I fear that I might use it up before reviewing it! Your kitties are so beautiful!!!! xoxo

    • Sunny @Mostly Sunny

Happy new year to you too, Helen! Haha you’d better act fast then! Inspiration wasn’t my favorite at the first sight, but now when I don’t know which blush to wear, I just reach for it. I like how natural it is without looking brown. A lot of the blushes that are labeled as “natural” have brown tones in them. While that’s not a bad thing, I don’t like anything remotely brownish on my cheeks when I wear a cool-toned red lipstick!

      • lola

I agree that Inspiration is definitely very natural looking without pulling at all brown. On me, it’s just a light dusty rose/pink. I love everything about it! This formula is so amazing– Chanel really did an A+ job! I agree- anything brownish on the cheeks with cool red lipstick (or cool pinks for that matter) end up making the complexion look a bit muddy.

  • Mademoiselle Sophistique

oh my! gefeliciteerd met je verloving! en natuurlijk de bijzondere prestatie om de soon-to-be-hubby tot het katisme te converteren..

    • Sunny @Mostly Sunny

Haha thanks! It actually wasn’t that hard!

  • Dovey

    Hi Sunny,

Congratulations on your engagement!! What exciting news! Happy New Year — and best of luck with everything to come :)

    • Sunny @Mostly Sunny

Thanks so much, Dovey! Happy new year to you, too! xx

  • expatmuaddict

Yey loved this post!! Yey to having 3 cuddly kitties, I think 3 is the best number (unless they’re serenading you at 4am as two of mine were this morning whilst the other threw up on the sofa).

The EL advanced night repair eye and the Dior Rouge Dior would definitely be in my 2013 faves-if I ever get around to writing them!

I didn’t get on too well with the LM Caviar sticks but I have just bought a couple of the By Terry Blackstar Ombre to try-will let you know how I get on.

Thanks for all your support of my blog in 2013 xxxx

    • Sunny @Mostly Sunny

I think it’s a bit like having 3 kids: you start seeing how they develop their social skills! So sorry to hear about the two singing you the song of their people at 4AM. I HATE that! Tango did it the other day, but I realized it was my fault because I forgot to move his favorite igloo into their sleeping room. What a diva :p It’s not as if he had nothing else to sleep in!

I’d love to hear how the By Terry ones work for you! I’ve been eyeing them for a while now, and I actually have easy access to the brand here!

LOVE your blog! Can’t wait to read more from you! xx

  • MyLuciteDreams

Happy New Year Sunny! I’ve discovered many beauties here on MSB! Loving your Best Of picks! Looking forward to what the new year brings :-)

Hi Sunny! I’m a new reader of your blog. :) Btw, congratulations on your engagement! I instantly fell in love with your blog the moment I saw it. Hihi. Looking forward to more posts from you! :)

    • Sunny @Mostly Sunny

Aww thanks so much, Emae! Look forward to seeing you around here 😉

  • BooBooNinja

Congratulations, dear Sunny, on the engagement and on converting the Mister to Catism! :) Happy New Year and thanks for your hard work.

    • Sunny @Mostly Sunny

Aww thanks so much, girl! I’m so glad you’ve been around 😉
