There seems to be a lot of “rules” regarding matchy-matchy. Apparently it’s chic to match your lippie with your nail polish, but it’s a big no-no if you do your mani and pedi with the same shade. Guerlain took matchy-matchy to a different level by naming some lipsticks/glosses after their classic fragrances. Since La Petite Robe Noire is quite a hit, the franchise has expanded to include a new perfume, *La Petite Robe Noire Eau de Parfum Couture, as well as a *Gloss d’Enfer. Let’s do matchy-matchy the Guerlain way!
Guerlain La Petite Robe Noire Couture (RRP for a 50ml bottle as pictured: 89 euros) is conceived as a glamorous chypre fragrance. If you’ve read some of my thoughts about perfumes, you might remember that I am huge on chypre. It’s the first genre I fell in love with, and I am still infatuated with it!
Interestingly enough, I really don’t get much of the chypre vibe from Guerlain La Petite Robe Noire Couture. In fact, it feels like a more tart and streamlined version of La Petite Robe Noire Eau de Parfum. The top notes include bergamot and raspberry, which is a bit of a twist of the original cherry and red berries. Rose is the only heart note here, but I can’t quite pick it out. As a matter of fact, most of it smells, like I said, like a more tart and simplified version of La Petite Robe Noire Eau de Parfum.
The base notes are supposed to be where the chypre comes in with patchouli, vetiver, tonka bean, and moss. However, all I get is a more powdery cherry, and that’s about it. La Petite Robe Noire Couture has become very faint after 7 hours. It won’t be completely gone for another 3 hours, but it is very elusive at that point. This is another slightly surprising part, since the original EDP lasts forever and a day on me!
All in all, I would say that Guerlain La Petite Robe Noire Couture is slightly less assertive than the original EDP, which is a scent that you can’t fail to notice. It is a bit less gourmand, but it doesn’t stray far from the original.
Now let’s move on to the namesake gloss, Guerlain La Petite Robe Noire Gloss d’Enfer (463)!
La Petite Robe Noire Gloss d’Enfer is quite a darling shade! It might not be something that makes you go “wow” in the tube, but if you swatch it, you might be able to see it’s actually quite unique! I would describe it as a plummy peachy pink with multi-chrome shimmer.
La Petite Robe Noire is slightly paler than my natural lip color. It is semi-sheer, so my natural color comes through. I can’t really feel the shimmer on my lips, and it is comfortable to wear as well as hydrating. In other words, it is as good as the other Gloss d’Enfers I have tried!
You see the shimmer quite well in the lip close-up:
Here is how it looks in context:
It’s rather nude on me. In real life, I might layer it over a lipstick!
Have you sniffed Guerlain La Petite Robe Noire? I associate the scent with bleak daylight, long nights, and a nip in the air. Now come to think of it, I have a sample of the EDT somewhere as well. I might have to dig it out and see how I like it!
