Laura Mercier Amethyst Caviar Stick & My Caviar Stick Collection!

Laura Mercier Amethyst, Heartbreaker Gel Lip Colour summer 2014 FOTD

Please welcome Amethyst, the latest addition to my Laura Mercier Caviar Stick collection! My love for these shadow sticks is well-documented here. While I hesitate to pick a favorite lipstick formula (it’s tough enough to name my top 3), Laura Mercier Caviar Stick has definitely gained the “holy grail” status in my eyeshadow stash.

Why? Not only is the formula solid, the shades are impressive. They all have such depth, and the shimmer is done in a very tasteful way!

Laura Mercier Amethyst Caviar Stick review

I had doubts about Amethyst not working too well for me. I was worried this warm, slightly reddish and slightly purplish brown would just make me look tired. I eventually succumbed to my curiosity, and I am glad I can pull it off!

Amethyst one pass, blended out:

I find it extremely difficult to describe this color, which is probably what makes it so interesting. Here I used it all over my lid with a bit of the eggplant in Chanel Charming blended into the outer third and smudged over my lower lash line:

It is just as smooth, highly blendable, and long-wearing as the other ones I have tried!

One note about Caviar Sticks‘ lasting power: I used to think they are not as tenacious as some other formulas I have tried (Tarte, MUFE), but recently I have figured out this has more to do with the primer I use. For the past year or so, I was on NARS Smudgeproof. When I ran out, I cracked open a tube of Urban Decay Primer Potion in my backup stash. That’s when I noticed the difference: now Caviar Sticks last all day on me even when I don’t add pressed shadow on top!

I think UDPP is better for oilier lids, since it really prevents the sebum from breaking the eyeshadow down. The new problem I have nowadays is it could be trickier to blend an eyeshadow on top of the combination of UDPP and Caviar Stick! While I plan to use this tube up, the search for a holy grail eye primer is far from over!

Here you see the look in context:

A quick heads-up: I have Laura Mercier Heartbreaker Gel Lip Colour on my lips.  It is part of their upcoming summer collection, and the shade I believe the model is wearing in the promo image. Review coming soon!

Now, let’s move on to my existing Laura Mercier Caviar Stick collection! While I am not eyeing another shade for the moment, a little bird told me some new ones are coming out in summer (July/August). I can’t promise my collection won’t continue to grow!

Laura Mercier Sandglow, Grey Pearl, Khaki, Amethyst Caviar Stick

From left to right, you see Sandglow, Grey Pearl, Khaki, and Amethyst. I can’t pick a favorite. In all honesty, I’d like to believe I use all of them (except for Amethyst, which is a new addition) equally often. It more or less just depends on the rest of the makeup I want to wear, and sometimes the season. It is minimum tinkering for maximum result. EVERYBODY loves that!

In short, if I haven’t managed to persuade you to at least swatch these, I don’t know what will!

Also, does anyone have an eye primer recommendation? I have tried NARS Smudgeproof and UDPP so far. Like I said, while both work, I wouldn’t mind exploring a different option. NARS Smudgeproof doesn’t fend the sebum off for quite as long (long enough for a normal working day, but if the day gets longer, it doesn’t always hold up), and eyeshadows could be harder to blend on top of UDPP. I’d like to believe there is a happy medium somewhere!

PS: I bought this from Cosmeticary (non-affiliate link). Just in case you live in Belgium and don’t quite know where to find the brand, there’s your answer.

  • Bella

Love the look you made, what a great idea to pair it with the aubergine from Charming. As you know I am a fellow Caviar Stick and Amethyst fan!! My collection is exactly yours, with Twilight instead of Grey Pearl. Most used are Sandglow and Khaki, which I like to wear together.
I am a Nars Smudgeproof user; I found that UDPP made my older eyelids look crepey if I used slightly shimmery products over it. The other eye primer people wax lyrical about is Too Faced Shadow Insurance, but I have not tried it.

    • Sunny @Mostly Sunny

Yaay I’m so happy I got Amethyst, Bella!

I’ve been thinking about Too Faced Shadow Insurance, too. It seems to get a lot of love!

  • Icaria

I might get Amethyst but I’m not sure yet since staying power isn’t exceptional on me even with primer. As you know I use NARS atm but may look for another, like for Bella, UD made my lids look pretty bad so it ain’t an option ant the same happened with Too Faced. I might try Clinique next. Love the pairing you did here. :)

    • Sunny @Mostly Sunny

Hey Helene, aww I’m so sorry to hear about the primer problem. I heard the Clinique one is great though! For me, UDPP is great at locking everything down, but sometimes it does that a little TOO well.

  • Sofia

I agree the shimmers are very tasteful I can’t them Laura Mercier products here, I should get a Caviar Eye Stick next time I’m in Lille!

    • Sunny @Mostly Sunny

Hey Sofia, aww that’s a bummer! Do check these out when you’re in Lille though!

  • Kiss & Make-up

*swoon* Amethyst is a beauty! But so is Khaki, which is the one that is on my wish list.

    • Sunny @Mostly Sunny

Hey Melissa, you should check both out! I’m sure you can create gorgeous smokey eyes with them!

      • Kiss & Make-up

        My fingers are itching :-)

  • Beauty Frontline

nice collection, i like the shades ..

    • Sunny @Mostly Sunny

You should check the line-up out if you can! I’ve collected 4 within a year. That should tell you about how much I love them!

  • Judith

That looks beautiful on you. I also like the color of khaki.

    • Sunny @Mostly Sunny

Khaki is one of those shades I’d wear ALL the time were it not for the fact that I didn’t want to bore you people!

  • jenn @Abeautifulzen

pretty as always! if i went for stick shadow formulas, i would defs go for some of these. its interesting how it works on different primers and i’m glad it works better on the UD for you. (non blendability aside)

    • Sunny @Mostly Sunny

      Thanks, Jenn!

These are creamier than everything else I’ve tried, so I need a primer that can really prevent the sebum. They’d last throughout regular work days on NARS, but beyond that I’d start to see a little smudging near my inner corners.

  • lyn

I love Caviar Sticks and have quite a collection too (must post about them someday soon). I love them to bits! I use Amethyst regularly. The consistency of the Caviar Sticks do vary. I find I can use Amethyst on its own but not Rose Gold or Sugar Frost, which I find work better with a primer base.

    • Sunny @Mostly Sunny

Hey Lyn, YES YOU SHOULD! I’d love to see the shades you own!

I don’t own any of the really light shades, but thanks for the heads-up! I pretty much systematically use a primer though. You just never know!

  • 38noodles

Amethyst looks perfect on you! I have a few of these babies too, love them. I can get away without primer for these, and actually use them as a base/primer in themselves.

    • Sunny @Mostly Sunny

Thanks, girl! I definitely need a primer in this case, but with a primer they do stay put!

  • JennySue Makeup

Just gorgeous – all of these products give you such a soft and dreamy look!! I’m a big fan of the Urban Decay primer potion as well – it LOCKS those shadows in!!

    • Sunny @Mostly Sunny

Thanks so much, JennySue! UDPP is great for locking everything down for sure :)

  • Nicci

Amethyst is so pretty! It’s next on my list of caviar sticks to get. It’s so strange to me that the NARS eye primer didn’t work for you – my lids are super oily too, and it’s the best one I’ve found, while UDPP does absolutely nothing. Lorac Behind the Scenes eye primer has worked pretty well for me though, and the Dior one also looks really interesting (though I haven’t tried it).

    • Sunny @Mostly Sunny

Hey Nicci, Smudgeproof does work for me, but for some reason it doesn’t keep these intact for longer than a regular work day. I’ve heard great things about the Lorac one, but it’s a brand I have no access to!

      • Nicci

Boooo, Lorac and their limited distribution channels! Though if you ever need someone to smuggle US makeup to you feel free to hit me up :-)

        • Sunny @Mostly Sunny

          Aww thanks, Nicci!

  • Lena L

    These are truly amazing!
Amethyst looks really pretty on you.
Did I tell you I gave a few sticks of these to my sister? Not because I didn’t like them but because I love my sister. LOL

    • Sunny @Mostly Sunny

Thanks, Lena! Oh wow you really must love your sister! I don’t have a sister, but I’m not even sure I’d want to share my Caviar Sticks even if I did :p

  • Jennifer Monforton

Gosh, you’re really tempting me with these! This is such a pretty shade and I’m glad the UD Primer Potion helped things out. It’s a staple of mine :)

    • Sunny @Mostly Sunny

Hey Jennifer, you should swatch the line-up and try just one! Although I’m pretty sure it won’t stop at one :p

  • TracyBeautyReflections

I wish I could get these to last longer on me Sunny as they are so dang pretty! I haven’t found a primer that stops sebum breaking through on them yet. I’m still looking as well. With eyeshadows I have to use a primer and a Mac Paintpot to prevent oily lids, but I don’t think that would work with shadow stick. If I find a combo that works I’ll let you know!

    • Sunny @Mostly Sunny

Hey Tracy, aww I’m so sorry to hear that. I think a primer, Paintpot, AND this might be a little too much layering indeed. I hope you’ll find something that works for you soon!

  • rachlovespenguins

Hahaha I should really stop reading eyeshadow posts if I’m trying not to buy any. But….the pretty!!! I wore stick and cream formulas all winter actually, as powders were definitely not agreeing with my poor eyeballs.

    • Sunny @Mostly Sunny

Aww so sorry to hear that! I actually use these all year round. In summer they’re also great because they wear well, and my eyeliner doesn’t smudge on top!

      • rachlovespenguins

I like non-smuding liner. It irks me when I blink and wind up with a mirror image of my liner at the top of my eyelid, hahaha. My eyes are somewhat recovered at the moment. I’m blaming the troubles on the weather and dry indoor air.

  • Allison @neversaydiebeauty

Amethyst was the first one I bought, and I think I own Sandglow as well. Thanks for reminding me about these. Gotta dig ’em out, and while I’m at it, I should review them too. I use the Anti-aging version of UDPP and I think it’s the best!!

    • Sunny @Mostly Sunny

Hey Allison, you have to dig them out and play with them! They’re fun AND easy to use!

How does the anti-aging version of UDPP compare with the original? Have you tried the original?

      • Allison @neversaydiebeauty

They may have reformulated the regular UDPP since I used it. I have dry eyelids so I may be different than most. When I used the regular UDPP a few years ago, my eyeshadow actually cracked on my eyelids. Not a good look. So that was it for me with the regular!

        • Sunny @Mostly Sunny

Hey Allison, ooo that makes sense. UDPP is great at keeping sebum production under control, so if your lids are dry, I can definitely see eyeshadows cracking on you! Now I need to look into that anti-aging version though!

          • rachlovespenguins

The anti-aging version is amazing. I’ve never had any issues with the regular one though, except for when I’m just about on empty and it gets a bit dry. Then I feel that it does something akin to the crepey effect Bella mentioned. The anti-aging version feels super smooth!

  • fancie

These are so pretty! I really like Amethyst! Have you tried Too Faced’s Shadow Insurance or Lorac eyeshadow primer? They’re both pretty good

    • Sunny @Mostly Sunny

Hey Fancie, nope but I’ve heard great things about both! It’s a little trickier for me to get Lorac (gotta wait till August when a friend is coming back from the US), but with all the glorifying recommendations, I just might have to pick it up :)

  • FoodGlossEtc

Hi Sunny! I blogged about my love for these babies a few weeks ago. I’m glad you finally picked up Amethyst. Like you, I have oily lids as well but I don’t use any primer when I’m using the Caviar Sticks. My “trick” sort of when using them alone is to apply, blend and let it dry before batting my peepers. The sheerer shades need a primer though. Have you checked out Trish McEvoy’s version? I have all shades but the lightest one on the blog. And you say there’s new Caviar Sticks coming sometime soon? Oh my, my heart’s doing some dancing. And I have to check those new LM Lip Glaces. I love that formula. xo, Emilie

    • Sunny @Mostly Sunny

Hey Emilie, hmm I have to give your trick a go at some point. My problem is my tricky eye shape: sebum starts eating through it around my inner corners!

I’m going to check out the Trish McEvoy posts on your blog in a sec! I actually went to the store to swatch By Terry Bronze Moon. While the shade is GORGEOUS, I am not 100% loving the bigger glitter specks. Oh well. I might end up getting it at some point just to see how it looks on me!

Yeah I heard there is going to be a brighter green and some other in-between shades! I have one of the new Lip Glaces coming up on the blog soon, but the shade I received is actually not as pigmented as the others I swatched (some of those are SO intense)!

  • Larie

Ack, if new ones are coming out, I’m in trouble. I have a mini of Amethyst that I like! I didn’t think it would work for me either, but surprisingly, it’s really beautiful.

    • Sunny @Mostly Sunny

Hey Larie, I know! I thought it’d be too red, so I actually swatched this and put it back at least 5 times before I finally bought it! No regrets tho!

  • Jaa

I’ve been waiting for this post! For some reason I knew you were going to blog about your Caviar Stick collection soon and here it is! 😀

Oh man, you just made it hard for me to choose! I really love Khaki and Amethyst! So I’ll probably pick up these two. However, if I were to be honest, I think I like Cocoa the most (the one that comes with the Artist Palette 2014)!

As for the eye primer, I’d like to suggest By Terry Hyaluronic Eye Primer! I have so many eye primers from so many brands but I like By Terry’s the most because it has a slight cooling effect that I love! It feels sooo good and refreshing on the eye. 😀 I find its texture somewhere between UDPP and TFSI. It’s easy to spread out and I never have any problem blending eyeshadows on top. The longevity is very comparable to other brands as far as I know, oh and it’s slightly tinted to cover redness! :)

    • Sunny @Mostly Sunny

Hey Jaa, I’m glad you enjoyed it! I don’t own Cocoa yet, but now I kinda want to swatch it again 😉

Thanks for the By Terry primer recommendation! I should look into that. I actually do have access to the brand here!

  • Rainy Days & Lattes

These are so nice!!! =) I like the lustery sheen that comes off from each individual shade.
i don’t use eye primer so much but when I do i really like the Laura Mecier eye basics primer in Wheat :)

    • Sunny @Mostly Sunny

Hey Jen, oh now that’s another primer I never paid much attention to! Thanks for the heads-up! I’ll look into it!

  • Whitney

When I first read Amethyst I thought I was going to see some purple colour, but I was not! EEEk, the more I read these reviews from you, the more I want. The shade suits you excellently; I love the pearly effect these sticks give off, AND it’s easy to apply.

    • Sunny @Mostly Sunny

Hey Whitney, I’d say it has a bit of a mauve glow, but I wouldn’t call it a purple 😉

You should check these out and maybe pick a light or medium shade up for spring/summer! All I can think about in terms of eye makeup recently is Sandglow :)

  • Rocaille

Looking gorgeous in Amethyst, Sunny! I love this eyeshadow stick formula – just blogged about a new-to-me shade, Sugar Frost, a couple weeks ago. I think Grey Pearl is still my favorite!

    • Sunny @Mostly Sunny

Thanks, Monika! I saw Sugar Frost on you! It’s gorgeous! I don’t own any of the very light shades yet. Not too sure how versatile they are on me (they seem more like shades that I use to highlight my inner corners), but maybe I need one for summer 😉

  • LifeOfBun

Sunnyyyy i’ve missed your gorgeous luxurious posts so much! And you always make me grab for my metallic & cream shadows. Going to play with my metal mania palette in a minute for a Khaki dupe – I can’t resist.

    • Sunny @Mostly Sunny

HEY YOU’RE BACK! You went off the radar for so long (OK not that long, but it felt that way)! Glad to hear you have set up shop again in Antwerp! And I say go for khaki!

  • Natasja

oh, just gorgeous… the swatches are amazing.. and though they can be annoying… if sticks blend well then they’re great 😀 I love all the colors you have… and I would definitely get solo sticks like these (returning to our talk about single eyeshadows or palettes). edit: I need to point out that I love your eyeliner in this one as well!

    • Sunny @Mostly Sunny

Hey Natasja, I actually think stick shadows are the EASIEST form of eyeshadows (assuming they last)! You should definitely check these out. I really like how complex all the shades seem to be!

  • Syirael

This is such a pretty colour :-) I’ve never tried any of the Caviar Sticks (or any stick-form cream eyeshadow at all, technically), but your little treasure hoard there looks very enticing! Don’t worry, I won’t raid it… 😉

    • Sunny @Mostly Sunny

Hey Syl, you should look into these! Stick shadows are the easiest thing to work with (easier than even cream shadow for me), and if the formula is good, they look pretty all day!

  • Nikki P.

Amethyst looks good on you Sunny. And the one I like best out of all your Caviar Stick collection.

    • Sunny @Mostly Sunny

Thanks, Nikki! You should take a look at these!

  • Isabelle

These look GREAT! How crazy good are those swatches?

    • Sunny @Mostly Sunny

You should swatch them yourself! I am pretty sure you’d be impressed!

  • Lily

Great picks, Sunny. All these shades are beautiful :-)

    • Sunny @Mostly Sunny

Thanks, Lily! I’m pretty sure all of these will work well on you, too!

  • Emae

Amethyst looks so amazing! I’ve never tried any of these before. Now I’m interested. :)

    • Sunny @Mostly Sunny

Hey Emae, you should! I love the formula AND a lot of the shades!

  • Jacqueline Ma

:) Sunny, I see your collection of Caviar Sticks are increasing like mine. I really love these. I don’t have Grey Pearl yet so that will be on my list. I’m glad you like Amethyst too. I can’t wait to see the new shades too.

    • Sunny @Mostly Sunny

Haha yeah. These are addictive! Grey Pearl is great! I love to pair it with Chanel Hasard!

  • Carina

Ahhh, I always love the looks you do. 😀 I am super drawn to Khaki!

    • Sunny @Mostly Sunny

Thanks so much, Carina! I have a REAL soft spot for Khaki!
