Estee Lauder Launches Pure Color Envy Sculpting Lipsticks & A Closer Look at Envious

Estee Lauder Pure Color Envy Sculpting Lipstick lineup

What if… a company actually listens to what women want from their lipsticks? Estee Lauder figured it out and combined the most desirable traits in their new formula, Estee Lauder Pure Color Envy Sculpting Lipstick (a different formula, Pure Color Envy Shine, is available in Asia). If intensity, hydration, and a sculpting effect tick your boxes, you can probably find a shade or two out of the 20-shade line-up to love!

Estee Lauder Pure Color Envy Sculpting Lipstick packaging

The first thing you might notice about these new Pure Color Envy Sculpting Lipsticks is the much more modern-looking packaging. Besides the heft (after all, what is the point of buying a luxury lipstick if it is going to feel like plastic in your hands?), you get a more than satisfying “click” from the magnetic closure! Another piece of great news (for me at least)? Instead of the typical fig scent, they only smell vaguely of vanilla!

Estee Lauder Envious (340)

The 20 shades are divided into four families, including nude, red, pink, and coral. There is probably something for everyone! The one you see here is *Envious (340. 3,5 grams/0.12 oz. RRP in Belgium: 33,11 euros), which is also the shade Carolyn Murphy sports in the commercial.

Estee Lauder Envious (340) Pure Color Envy Sculpting Lipstick

Envious is a shade I would describe as a vibrant red with a hint of raspberry. If you prefer pigmented lipsticks, you have come to the right place. Envious is basically a stick of pure pigment! Forget about layering. You barely have to dab this on your lips for the color to latch onto them! Because of this, there is a smaller margin of error (especially when it comes to such a show-stopping shade). If you want the contour to look perfect, I would advise you to put the first layer on with a lip brush. Since it wears so well (it is the type of lipsticks that never, ever completely wears off), for the rest of the day, you only have to dab a little back on.

Another special thing about Estee Lauder Pure Color Envy Sculpting Lipstick is the “Time Release Encapsulated Moisture Complex” with hyaluronic acid. Basically, for 6 hours after you put it on, every time you press your lips together, this complex releases lip-conditioning ingredients. No more dry lips!

Here is how Envious swatches. Can you even tell the difference between one swipe and several swipes?

A lip closeup so that you can see how smooth and luminous the finish is (this is one layer straight from the bullet):

To give you a better idea about how the shade is, I compared it with some others in my collection. From left to right you see Dior 999 Rouge Dior, Estee Lauder Envious, Chanel La Précieuse Rouge Allure Velvet, and Tom Ford Cherry Lush:

All in all, well done, Estee Lauder! You have to like “real” lipsticks to appreciate Estee Lauder Pure Color Envy Sculpting Lipsticks (it is not the type of translucent, glossy hybrids that run wild nowadays), and you have to be fully committed to the shade(s) in a way (because there is no room for your natural lip color to influence how it looks on you. I tried a lighter shade on during the press conference. Were it a sheerer formula, it might have worked. However, it ended up looking a bit too pale on me). If you are a traditional lipstick girl at heart and you found a shade or 5 you love, you might be hooked!

Estee Lauder webshop Belgium

Also, finally! Estee Lauder now has their own webshop in Belgium! Shipping is free for the moment, and you get to choose two deluxe miniatures. There are also shades that are exclusively available on the webshop!

So, traditional lipsticks, yay or nay? Most of the time I reach for something a bit sheerer and easier to wear, but when I want real impact, nothing beats painting my pout with a lip brush and a lipstick like this!

  • Chia-Yi Liu

time release capture sounds cool but definitely a no if it requires me to pull out a lip brush to apply properly. that’s just code for so far back in my collection i won’t even remember to wear it on special occasions!

    • Sunny @Mostly Sunny

Hey Chia-Yi, I see your point. Lighter shades are definitely easier to apply though. It’s the same thing with lipsticks in general 😉

  • Bella

I should check these out. I used to use Estee Lauder in my first job in a very busy hospital in South Africa though, and the sight/scent/feel of EL products always take me back to those hectically busy, anxious days, so that I haven’t been able to do more than swatch them since about 1995 LOL!

    • Sunny @Mostly Sunny

Hey Bella, whoaa OK that sounds like a stressful scent-related memory! It now smells a bit like MAC and TF though! Maybe you can wear these :)

  • BeautiesEva

looks great on you 😀 i’ve read nothing but positive things about this lipstick

    • Sunny @Mostly Sunny

I think personal preferences will always play a role, but the formula is indeed solid! Now I am curious about the Asian version haha. It is supposed to be slightly translucent with more of a shine!

  • Sofia

I’m loving the colour of envious. Though yes, I do tend to reach for more translucent shiny formulas and leave something like this only for once in a a while..

    • Sunny @Mostly Sunny

Hey Sofia, same here. This is not something you want to apply without a mirror or in a hurry, but the same goes to many bold lipsticks!

  • peggy timmermans

I love the texture very much…I have Impulsive now which is more my colour and I like it! Envious suits you pretty good Sunny!

    • Sunny @Mostly Sunny

Oh yay! Glad to hear you found a shade that you love!

  • 38noodles

Next companies should listen to complaints about different makeup ranges for different regions. I can understand why there might be region-specific skincare and base makeup, but lipstick?
I really wanted to get my hands on some of the Envy Sculpting line reds, but EL decided to curve ball us and bring out a line ‘catered’ for Asians. Ugh. I’m pretty sure all the colours will suit non-Asians perfectly fine, as well as Asians suiting the Sculpting line. On further though, I wonder if this big companies’ method of getting around the EU ban of Animal Testing vs China’s regulations…..

    • Sunny @Mostly Sunny

Hey girl, aww I’m sorry to hear that. Ideally I’d love both lines to be available all over the world, but I can see why they did this. It’s not about the shades. It’s more about formula preferences. I don’t see many girls back home sporting this one, for example. People seem to really go for shinier and easier-to-wear shades.

I don’t know about animal testing, but I know that it is a pain for cosmetics fabricated outside of the EU to enter the market. This explains why we normally get limited edition collections much later, and sometimes not at all.

  • Judith

    That looks lovely on you!

    • Sunny @Mostly Sunny

Thanks, Judith! I like the hint of raspberry in there!

  • jenn @Abeautifulzen

    wow look at the pigmentation.

    • Sunny @Mostly Sunny

Yeah. I swatched a bunch, and they are ALL like this!

  • Siri Lovise Eliassen

Don’t do this to me, girl! I’m trying to hold out on getting Envious ’till after summer. I’ve enough of a struggle not getting a pink or coral shade from the line. I agree with you on pigmentation. I was going for a nude lippie, I ended up with the MLBB shade Intense Nude – and got Guerlain LPRN lipgloss to cater to my other needs – because they were so loaded with pigment that the lighter shades made me look drab and washed out.
Have you noticed how plump and full they make lips seem? Really makes me want to do a Jolie-inspired look :p

    • Sunny @Mostly Sunny

Haha sorry! Phew I’m glad you had the same experience. I was beginning to think I’m crazy!

Annnnd yes. I think it’s how it reflects light? 😉

      • Siri Lovise Eliassen

Hehe – glad we can put each other’s minds to rest, because I couldn’t believe how concealer-like certain shades applied on my lips,in spite of the amazing formula. Must be the way the way the “Multi-faceted pigments create definition.” And probably reflects the light to make ” Lips look beautifully shaped, sculpted, curvaceous.” Because there’s none of that characteristic tingling upon application, and I think the BF might’ve complained if there were after he kissed me :p

        • Sunny @Mostly Sunny

Oh hahaha nope, no tingling here, either!

  • LifeOfBun

That shade reminds me of a cherry tree, how beautiful!! Works great with your top there too, Sunny, so modern looking!

    • Sunny @Mostly Sunny

Thanks, Anouchka! I like the tint of raspberry in it! Stops it from being just another red :)

  • Lena L

I really like this shade on you. It is bright for sure, but I can tell the formula is really excellent as I see the color is hugging your lips. :)

    • Sunny @Mostly Sunny

Thanks so much, Lena! Yeah that is a good way of putting it!

  • Lys

Envious looks gorgeous on you! I’ve read a lot of reviews on these lipsticks in the past few days and although I don’t think I’ll buy one soon, you’ve all got me very curious about the formula :)

    • Sunny @Mostly Sunny

Thanks, Lys! The formula is solid. You should take a look!

  • Lou

Love Envious, what a great shade on you – looks fantastic! I’ve never really given much thought to EL lippies, but I may have to take swing by a counter and hope we have these in the UK too

    • Sunny @Mostly Sunny

Thanks so much, Lou! I am pretty sure they’re already available in the UK as weIl. I personally prefer this formula to other EL lipsticks!

      • Lou

I just tested it and HAD to buy it. Its an amazing shade and the hydration on the lips is just dreamy!

        • Sunny @Mostly Sunny

Oh hey, that’s great! I hope you’re loving it!

  • Kiss & Make-up

Yep, that’s a reaaaaal lipstick for sure! But it looks fantastic on you! Great shade.

    • Sunny @Mostly Sunny

Thanks, Melissa! I don’t wear these quite as often, but when I want a lot of impact, they are perfect!

  • Liz

I’ve been looking at EL makeup more and more as of late. I think they’re successfully shedding that granny image that’s been plaguing them for a while! This lipstick looks fabulous.

    • Sunny @Mostly Sunny

Hey Liz, yeah I agree! They have definitely been coming up with innovative formulas recently!

  • Stella Ronnakittipisut

I kinda liked the shades available in Asia but now I’m in States and don’t have access to them :( Wonder if the shades are similar to the U.S shades.

    • Sunny @Mostly Sunny

Hey Stella, aww I’m so sorry to hear that! I think you guys get more or less the same line-up as we do here in Europe. The Asian line-up is a lot more understated and “everyday” in general, though I think you can find comparable shades in the US as well!

  • Redhotjillypeppers

I like the way lipstick looks on other people but I’m more of a lipbalm person myself

    • Sunny @Mostly Sunny

I used to be like that! Then I discovered lipsticks LOL

  • TracyBeautyReflections

I want to try one of these! That shade is perfect on you Sunny! So the lighter ones are really opaque too then? Hmmmm. Will have to look at them in person!

    • Sunny @Mostly Sunny

Thanks so much, Tracy! Yup. The lighter shades are REALLY opaque as well. I think that’s something to bear in mind when picking a shade. There is no room for your natural lip color to influence this much at all.

  • expatmuaddict

One of my friends bought me one of these for my birthday-its called coral something (right up our coral loving street hey!) and I can’t wait to try it! And bravo EL for bringing out a proper unashamed lipstick rather than the millions of hybrids that are out at the moment!!!

    Stacey Expat Make-Up Addict xx

    • Sunny @Mostly Sunny

Hey Stacey, I think it’s Defiant Coral! I need to try that as well. We might just get along :)

I like everything that is decently pigmented and above. This formula is unapologetically opaque!

  • Oreleona

    the color is Gorgeous!!

    • Sunny @Mostly Sunny

Thanks, Oreleona! I think it will work for many different skin tones!

  • Larie

YESSSSS NO MORE FIG SCENT. So excited! 😀

    • Sunny @Mostly Sunny

      I. KNOW! I have the same issue with Edward Bess lipsticks. I just can’t handle the scent! Now it’s just a subtle vanilla and I can live with that :)

  • AnneliesDP

These products look so chique! Definitely want to try them out!
    Love, Annelies

    • Sunny @Mostly Sunny

I basically can’t stop opening and closing the lipstick just so that I can hear the click! It’s bordering OCD now LOL

  • Syirael

Ooh, I’ve been wanting to try these out for ages!! Not even sure if we have them here, actually…

Also: OHHHHHHH. EL lipsticks are supposed to smell like FIG?! I’ve always wondered what it was supposed to be, hehe. I just call it the ‘EL lipstick smell’. I’m kind of glad if these ones don’t smell like it though, because I’m still not sure I like that really strong scent.

Clearly I don’t eat enough figs.

    • Sunny @Mostly Sunny

Hey Syl, I’m pretty sure they will be available there soon! It is a pretty big launch from what I can see :)

Yup I think it’s fig, or it’s supposed to be fig. Fig scents and I aren’t buddy buddy, so I’m glad these only smell faintly of vanilla.

  • Dominique33

    I love the texture ( perfect ) and the shades. I purchased Tumultuous Pink and today^^ Vengeful Red, both are really worth the splurge. Envious looks very pretty on you;

    • Sunny @Mostly Sunny

Hey Dominique, glad to hear you’re loving the texture! The shades you picked out are gorgeous! I hope you’ll love them :)

  • Aurélie Bekaert

That colour looks great on you 😉

    • Sunny @Mostly Sunny

Thanks, Aurelie! This red isn’t that hard to wear at all!

  • Beauty Frontline

Beautiful texture and color looks gr8 on you dear! :)

    • Sunny @Mostly Sunny

Thanks, girl! You should check these out, although I m not sure which version you’ll get in India.

  • Phil

I love how you tweeted “FINALLY NO MORE FIG SCENT” 😀

    • Sunny @Mostly Sunny

Haha yeah that has to be one of my favorite, favorite things about these!

  • Natasja

Sunny, I love this color on you! And now I want it on me too, haha. I get why it’s called ‘envious’ :’)

    • Sunny @Mostly Sunny

Hahaha thanks, Natasja! There is actually one commercial in which a lady really eyes Carolyn Murphy’s lipstick. I guess they didn’t invent the hashtag “lipstickenvy” for nothing!

  • Lily

Well, the packaging looks the same, but the shape of the lipstick bullet itself is different. Ours (Pure Color Envy Shine) looks more like Chanel Coco Shine, and the texture sounds similar… so I’m a little puzzled. Need to do a little more digging :-)

    • Sunny @Mostly Sunny

Hey Lily, is Envy Shine also very pigmented? The line we get is extremely opaque!

      • Lily

I wouldn’t say it’s super pigmented, but it’s pigmented enough. The shade I have is a lighter one, and it does cover my natural lip colour which is a little darker. I was expecting the texture to be more emolient and shiny, you know… but it’s not. I’m not sure if I really like it.

        • Sunny @Mostly Sunny

Oh OK, I get ya. So sorry to hear that!

  • Jennifer Monforton

Gosh, these look amazing! I love boldly pigmented lispticks and the formula sounds amazing. That shade you’re wearing looks fab on you :)

    • Sunny @Mostly Sunny

Thanks, Jennifer! If bold and pigmented lipsticks are your favorites, you have to check these out! With one swipe it is COMPLETELY opaque!

  • Whitney

OOO my mom would love these!!!! It would make a good present for her. She loves estee lauder!

    • Sunny @Mostly Sunny

Hey Whitney, in that case you should pick out a shade or two that she would enjoy! In my humble opinion this is a much more impressive formula!

  • Shayne♥

really really like what you said here —You have to like “real” lipsticks to appreciate Estee Lauder Pure Color Envy Sculpting Lipsticks
(it is not the type of translucent, glossy hybrids that run wild
nowadays), and you have to be fully committed to the shade(s) in a way
(because there is no room for your natural lip color to influence how it
looks on you.—- my kind of lipstick :) i wrote envious lipstick on my phone as something to check when i visit EL, hopefully these lipsticks are available here in the PH.

    • Sunny @Mostly Sunny

Aww thanks, Shayne! I’m glad you found my descriptions helpful!

Although… in the Philippines you might be getting a different formula (the line is called Pure Color Envy Shine I think). I haven’t read too much about it, but I doubt very much it’s as pigmented as this version.

  • Раиса Вербовецкая

lipstick very good! sight! varnishes but look the same, or in this collection just one nail?

    • Sunny @Mostly Sunny

Hey girl, there is just one nail polish. It’s called Envious!

      • Раиса Вербовецкая

I’m not a girl, I Raisa, ibid stated my name) Thanks for the answer, just thought paints the picture worth a lot, and it turns out one. I’m glad you like lipstick, I hope to see more colors and swatch with her

  • syrena85

I have one of these lipsticks and to be honest I am not very impressed. Fact, they are very creamy and shades are lovely I have to say, but they dry out my lips :(. Maybe they have somethin g in their formula that I just can’t use :(

    • Sunny @Mostly Sunny

Aww I’m so sorry to hear about that, Irena! I seldom have the drying problem, so I can’t tell. Too bad :(

  • Jaa

Guess it’s time to buy my first EL lipstick! Vanilla scent? Yum! Clickie cap? Yes! Black and gold square packaging? Awesome! Wait, these sound like the packaging of TF lipsticks! Well minus the magnetic part…

Envious looks really nice on you, Sunny! I think I’ll look into a pink or coral for me, though, so it’s more wearable. 😀

    • Sunny @Mostly Sunny

Hahaha I think the EL ones have a lighter scent, and also it’s more like a navy blue (but then again, EL owns TF, so I wouldn’t be surprised…)!

Thanks so much, Jaa! I’ll definitely be looking for a more everyday shade for myself as well! I’ll keep you posted if I find one :)

  • corallista

Sounds absolutely wonderful! I have always associated EL with the ‘classic’ lipstick formula and one that I’ve loved wearing lately is Red Tango from the Pure Color range. I’ll definitely check these out next time I head over the EL counter.

Envious looks absolutely gorgeous on you and I love the top you’re wearing here!

    • Sunny @Mostly Sunny

      Thanks so much, Ankita!

I am not sure if you will get the same range or the Pure Color Envy Shine range. I think it’s the latter. I’d be curious to hear what you think about those!

  • Jacqueline Ma

What a gorgeous shade on you Sunny. I love how it looks on you. To be honest I haven’t tried an EL lipstick in ages. Guess it’s time to give the counter a visit.

    • Sunny @Mostly Sunny

      Thanks so much, Jacqueline!

You should check the new line out (although I think you get a different version, Pure Color Envy Shine)! I definitely prefer this to their other formula!

  • SmashinBeauty

not a fan of EL lipsticks but the shades are nice

    • Sunny @Mostly Sunny

You should check this line-up out! It is significantly different from their existing lipsticks.

  • Carina

This looks so lovely, Sunny. :)

    • Sunny @Mostly Sunny

Hey Carina, if you’re ready to commit to a shade, this is definitely a formula you should take a look at (although I’m not sure if you’ll get the same formula or the Asian formula. That one is still pigmented from what I heard, but maybe not to the same level)!

  • fiona furtado

This is a beautiful shade and looks so pretty on you :)) I have got a shade called rebellious rose which obviously I have been loving

    • Sunny @Mostly Sunny

Thanks so much, Fiona! Rebellious Rose is a beautiful shade!

      • fiona furtado

        Thank you sunny:)
