What if… a company actually listens to what women want from their lipsticks? Estee Lauder figured it out and combined the most desirable traits in their new formula, Estee Lauder Pure Color Envy Sculpting Lipstick (a different formula, Pure Color Envy Shine, is available in Asia). If intensity, hydration, and a sculpting effect tick your boxes, you can probably find a shade or two out of the 20-shade line-up to love!
The first thing you might notice about these new Pure Color Envy Sculpting Lipsticks is the much more modern-looking packaging. Besides the heft (after all, what is the point of buying a luxury lipstick if it is going to feel like plastic in your hands?), you get a more than satisfying “click” from the magnetic closure! Another piece of great news (for me at least)? Instead of the typical fig scent, they only smell vaguely of vanilla!
The 20 shades are divided into four families, including nude, red, pink, and coral. There is probably something for everyone! The one you see here is *Envious (340. 3,5 grams/0.12 oz. RRP in Belgium: 33,11 euros), which is also the shade Carolyn Murphy sports in the commercial.
Envious is a shade I would describe as a vibrant red with a hint of raspberry. If you prefer pigmented lipsticks, you have come to the right place. Envious is basically a stick of pure pigment! Forget about layering. You barely have to dab this on your lips for the color to latch onto them! Because of this, there is a smaller margin of error (especially when it comes to such a show-stopping shade). If you want the contour to look perfect, I would advise you to put the first layer on with a lip brush. Since it wears so well (it is the type of lipsticks that never, ever completely wears off), for the rest of the day, you only have to dab a little back on.
Another special thing about Estee Lauder Pure Color Envy Sculpting Lipstick is the “Time Release Encapsulated Moisture Complex” with hyaluronic acid. Basically, for 6 hours after you put it on, every time you press your lips together, this complex releases lip-conditioning ingredients. No more dry lips!
Here is how Envious swatches. Can you even tell the difference between one swipe and several swipes?
A lip closeup so that you can see how smooth and luminous the finish is (this is one layer straight from the bullet):
To give you a better idea about how the shade is, I compared it with some others in my collection. From left to right you see Dior 999 Rouge Dior, Estee Lauder Envious, Chanel La Précieuse Rouge Allure Velvet, and Tom Ford Cherry Lush:
Here you see Envious on me:
All in all, well done, Estee Lauder! You have to like “real” lipsticks to appreciate Estee Lauder Pure Color Envy Sculpting Lipsticks (it is not the type of translucent, glossy hybrids that run wild nowadays), and you have to be fully committed to the shade(s) in a way (because there is no room for your natural lip color to influence how it looks on you. I tried a lighter shade on during the press conference. Were it a sheerer formula, it might have worked. However, it ended up looking a bit too pale on me). If you are a traditional lipstick girl at heart and you found a shade or 5 you love, you might be hooked!
Also, finally! Estee Lauder now has their own webshop in Belgium! Shipping is free for the moment, and you get to choose two deluxe miniatures. There are also shades that are exclusively available on the webshop!
So, traditional lipsticks, yay or nay? Most of the time I reach for something a bit sheerer and easier to wear, but when I want real impact, nothing beats painting my pout with a lip brush and a lipstick like this!
