I don’t believe there is an “ideal man” any more than I believe there is a perfect individual, but Guerlain seems to have figured out what the ideal man should smell like! The new *Guerlain L’Homme Idéal Eau de Toilette has just rolled onto the shelves. Dr. D was kind enough to be my lab rat, so get ready to discover this sexy scent!
I don’t call every (male) scent sexy. In all honesty, I am indifferent to most of them. The last one that made me swoon was Givenchy Gentlemen Only (now come to think of it, I must try to lay my hands on a sample of the new Intense version). Within seconds of spritzing this on Dr. D however, I knew it would be memorable!
Packaging-wise, Guerlain L’Homme Idéal (RRP for 50 ml: 66 euros) has a clean and sleek silhouette, but the little details make it luxurious. I like the cap, the black sides, and the shape of the surface. I feel that they add a modern touch to an otherwise classic flacon.
Guerlain L’Homme Idéal starts off with citruses, rosemary, and orange blossom. I smell more citruses and orange blossom, and soon it moves onto the sensual heart of almond, tonka bean, and vanilla. The heart notes are allegedly inspired by Amaretto, and I see the resemblance. It is smooth, sweet, and there is a lot of depth. If scents have a “shape,” this one would be round. I don’t know if I am making any sense, but that’s how it feels.
The base notes of L’Homme Idéal get even more interesting. We’re talking leather, cedar, and vetiver. It is leathery, woody, and I can’t stress enough how much I personally enjoy vetiver! On bare skin, Guerlain L’Homme Idéal lasts for 6-7 hours. It is average for an eau de toilette, but it is such a great scent that Dr. D said he wishes it would wear longer (can we please get an eau de parfum version next time, pretty please?)!
All in all, I think Guerlain L’Homme Idéal is a fragrance that is modern but has plenty of substance. It is not so “classic” that it wouldn’t work on 20-somethings, but it is not so “hip” that it wouldn’t work on gentlemen in their 30’s and 40’s, either. For me, it is very surprising because it is almost sweet, and I don’t think I can say the same about other male fragrances I have smelled so far. Curious yet? Spray some on a piece of paper, or better, your man. I hope you’ll enjoy it as much as we do!
