Ladies and gentlemen, the holiday collection I was waiting for with baited breath has finally landed! Behold the beauty of Guerlain Un Soir à l’Opéra! I almost needed a paper bag when I saw all these beautiful pieces, and I’ve got to share my first impression and quick swatches with you today!
I don’t know a lot about classic Guerlain perfumes, but Coque d’Or (golden shell) became part of my vocabulary a few years ago when I got the namesake Rouge Automatique. It was one of my first luxury lipsticks and the one that made me fall in love with lipsticks, so it still has a very special place in my heart. Un Soir à l’Opéra (an evening at the opera) is inspired by this classic Guerlain fragrance, as Jacques Guerlain created Coque d’Or in homage to his great friend Diaghilev, the founder of Ballets Russes (Russian ballet).
*Guerlain Coque d’Or Perfumed Shimmer Powder Body & Hair (79 euros) is something any true Guerlain fan would want. The powder is delicately scented. When you press down on the red bulb, you see a swirl of golden fairy dust dancing onto your skin. It’s magical!
*Guerlain Petrouchka Palette (77 euros) packs 5 eyeshadows and 4 blushes. I will show you more photos of the packaging when I review it, but for the moment just know that it’s a real piece of eye candy!
In terms of the eyeshadows, I do spot some repeats from last year’s Crazy Paris palette (some of them got carried over from Liu, the palette from two years ago). In general, I am very impressed with how they swatch, as they are softer and creamier than most Guerlain powders (which don’t tend to swatch well because they are tightly-packed, but that doesn’t affect how they work).
The eyeshadows are uniformly warm-toned, so that might be something to take into consideration.
Guerlain blushes don’t seem to get much attention (probably because they don’t swatch well), but my experience has been great. I own Peach Boy from the regular line-up, and it has to be one of the blushes I wear the most often (however, it doesn’t even look that way, as the powder is extremely tightly-packed). If you have concerns about how hard Guerlain blushes seem, you might like all four shades in Petrouchka. They are soft, smooth, and the color payoff is pretty awesome!
I personally like the combination a lot, because you get two blushes (the light pink and the tangerine coral), a sculpting blush (the plummy shade), and a highlighting blush (the nude peach). It sorts your cheek needs out right there!
I haven’t tried the new Météorites since they were reformulated earlier this year. What better way to give the new formula a go than with *Guerlain Perles d’Étoile Météorites (49 euros)? I don’t have any swatches for you, because it is pointless to swatch Météorites. I will try to do a before/after when I review it instead. If you collect Météorites or pretty makeup in general, you need Perles d’Étoile in your life!
The legendary Rouge G is dressed in red and gold this time around. Guerlain Rouge Parade Rouge G (820. 45 euros) is as pretty as red lipsticks come!
I do a little happy sigh every time I put a Rouge G on. Lipsticks don’t get better than these!
There are two Écrin 2 Couleurs in the collection, Cygne Noir (black swan) and Cygne Blanc (white swan). I have *Cygne Noir (10. 40,50 euros) here.
You can create an smokey look if you use the duo alone. However, you can also throw some lighter shades in the mix and use them to intensify your eyes! The dark grey takes a little building up, but the eggplant is deliciously rich.
Not ready to wear a red lipstick? Try *Guerlain Rouge Parade Gloss d’Enfer (920. 29 euros). It is extremely pigmented: my kind of gloss!
Want to add a little light to your lips? How about some *L’Oiseau de Feu(firebird) Gloss d’Enfer (901. 29 euros)?
Last but not least, a lady doesn’t go to the opera with her nails bare! Here you see *L’Oiseau de Feu Le Top Coat Or (901. 23,50 euros) and *Coque d’Or La Laque Couleur (400. 23,50 euros). Apparently gold flakie top coats are in fashion this season! I’ll make sure I compare this one and Dior’s version for you!
Phew. That’s quite a long post. I hope you got to feast your eyes on this amazing collection. A classic holiday collection can be done right, and I consider this a prime example! Looks and full reviews will follow soon. Are you eyeing anything? Did you already get something? Do tell!
