It’s hard not to do some real damage to the wallet this time of the year. Even if you are not into any of the holiday collections, there are a gazillion value sets that try really hard to make you part with your hard-earned cash. Case in point today: NARS Digital World Lip Pencil Coffret!
NARS Digital World Lip Pencil Coffret packs two Velvet Matte Lip Pencils (Cruella and Iberico. Iberico is exclusive to this set) and three Satin Lip Pencils (Yu, Descanso, and Torres Del Paine. Descanso and Torres Del Paine were limited edition shades that came out with their spring collection). Each of these weighs about 70% of their full-size counterparts, yet the set costs roughly the same with two regular pencils. In other words, it’s a pretty good deal!
The acrylic box has the NARS holiday collection “Laced with Edge” pattern. I am thinking I’ll use mine as two trays to make my desk tidier and prettier!
Shade selection-wise, NARS did a great job. You have your my-lips-but-better/nudes, a hot pink, a hot orange, and a red. I would be happier if NARS had swapped out either Descanso or Torres Del Paine for a berry or plum, but that is very personal!
From left to right you see Torres Del Paine, Descanso, Yu, Iberico, and Cruella:
I am just going to put it out there right now: I prefer the the three bolder shades to the two tamer ones. While Torres Del Paine and Descanso aren’t exactly bad, they don’t knock my socks of the way the other three do!
NARS Torres Del Paine Satin Lip Pencil lip swatch:
Torres Del Paine is a peachy coral. To be honest, I am still a little torn about this shade. Especially when it is freshly-applied. Torres Del Paine reminds me of a 60’s peachy shade. Maybe a little less chalky, but you get the idea. The main issue with the formula itself is that it is too creamy. As a result, it sinks into lip lines and looks a little patchy (but this doesn’t happen with the brighter shades). I also keep thinking it has a bit of a waxy texture. It is semi-opaque and wears for 3-4 hours on me.
Fortunately, you don’t see the patchiness from a distance!
I actually almost bought Descanso when it came out earlier this year because I thought it would be a dupe of my beloved Dior Spring Ball Addict Extreme (aka the one lipstick I love so much that I panicked and bought two backups when I learnt it was on its way out). Well, I’m glad I didn’t, because it isn’t.
Like Torres Del Paine, the creaminess in Descanso works against it. As you can see, it sinks into lines, although it doesn’t look patchy like Torres Del Paine. It is pretty much opaque with one pass, and it wears for 4 hours on me. It is between an MLBB and nude for me, although this will largely depend on the wearer’s skin tone. Mine has a tendency of making every shade lighter, thus washing me out a little.
Here it looks like an MLBB…
Paired with a stronger eye, it can be a nude!
My experience with Torres Del Paine and Descanso taught me that if I get another of these Satin Lip Pencils, it will most probably be a bolder/darker shade, as the formula doesn’t seem to work well with the paler ones (at least not on my lips). Although I must admit with the increased amount of testing I have been doing, my lips are a little worse for wear. I’ll let you know if I end up changing my mind about these two!
Now let’s move onto the happy part! Look at NARS Yu Satin Lip Pencil: isn’t it a beauty?
Yu is a bright fuchsia pink with a creamy sheen. My skin tone pulls a lot of the blue in the shade out, but I suspect it’ll look different on everyone. Yu is fully-opaque, looks 100% even on, and it just wears and wears! I counted 7 hours (a greasy soupy meal included), and it left behind a light stain. Once the sheen wears off, it looks more like a matte, but feels less dry than a real matte.
A real show-stopper for sure!
I know the “season” for orange might have passed, but who cares? I’ll continue to flaunt NARS Iberico Velvet Matte Lip Pencil all around town!
NARS Iberico Velvet Matte Lip Pencil is a fiery orange with a matte finish. It goes on easily. The texture feels dry but not drying. Once it wears off a little, it becomes more of an orange coral! This is another shade that even a big meal can’t kill off, although depending on what you eat, you might want to reapply afterwards.
Definitely crushing hard on Iberico as well!
NARS Cruella is one of those shades that people keep raving about, and now I can see why! This darker cool red is a little vampy while not being particularly difficult to wear. It is matte, but it doesn’t tug on the skin. Once it’s on, again, unless you want to remove it, it’s never going to truly go away!
All in all, depending on your skin tone and personal preferences (which is always the case), I would recommend NARS Digital World Lip Pencil Coffret in general. The value is there, and if you think you’ll like the shades, you might want to snatch one up before it’s all sold out. Personally, when I get another NARS lip pencil, it’ll be a bold shade. The pencil form makes it easy to achieve a clean line without the need of a liner. If I’m looking for a more everyday shade however, I’ll stick to my Dior Addict Extremes and Guerlain Rouge Automatiques.
Have you given in to the temptation yet? To all the NARSissists out there: which shade should I try next? I’m thinking Damned!
PS: Digital World is a Sephora exclusive as far as I know. In Europe, you can find it on the French Sephora site. I got mine from SpaceNK with some help of the lovely Ting, as SpaceNK does not ship NARS out of the UK!
