With my combination skin, very few products can really do it all. I have resorted to using different serums, creams, and even primers for different areas of my face. I’ll admit it might seem excessive to many, but this is pretty much the only way to keep my skin happy. Caudalie recently launched *4 masks that allow me to build a mask wardrobe that covers all my skincare concerns. While you might not need all four, out of Moisturizing, Glycolic Peel, Instant Detox, and Purifying masks, you will probably find at least a couple that you need in your skincare cabinet!
Caudalie masks come in 75 ml/2,5 oz tubes with a wooden cap (RRP in Belgium: 23,80 euros). I personally find the price tag very reasonable for the amount/quality you get.
Here is the breakdown of each mask:
Caudalie Moisturizing Mask has the Caudalie signature scent. The consistency is lightly creamy. You can leave this on for 15 minutes or even overnight. The excess is supposed to be wiped off, so I use a lukewarm Sensai Sponge Chief to remove whatever is still on my face by the time I deem my skin (usually my cheeks/neck) has had enough of a moisture boost. As promised, it hydrates well and soothes the skin. Mine gets dehydrated in spring sometimes, and I can say this works better than many other moisturizing masks I have tried. I also find that it has a firming effect. I guess that’s a package deal with well-moisturized skin!
Caudalie Glycolic Peel is a thicker cream with a fresh herbal scent. It is supposed to stay on your skin for 10 minutes before being rinsed off. My skin is notorious for not getting along with most skincare that contains AHAs, but it is just fine with this one. It does make my skin smoother and brighter. If you already use a more hardcore chemical peel, you shouldn’t expect this to function in the same way. I would say it’s more like a maintenance session between two peels. If you are new to AHAs or chemical peeling, this is a good one to try because it is mild enough.
Now onto the two clay masks! I actually had the opportunity to talk to some Caudalie people recently, and I asked how the Instant Detox Mask and Purifying Mask differ from each other. The answer I got is Instant Detox works for dull skin and enlarged pores. Purifying Mask on the other hand, is meant for skin that suffers from acne. For the most part, I personally find the two interchangeable. However, I will say that if you want to leave a mask on for an extended period of time as a targeted spot treatment, the Purifying version might work better because it has a thicker texture, and it doesn’t feel tight.
Caudalie Instant Detox Mask is a reddish clay mask with a thin and easily-spreadable texture. It contains lavender oil, so it has a lavender smell. What I love about this one is you only need a thin layer and 5 minutes for the skin to look much clearer. I usually keep this to my T-zone, but I have used it all over my face and I didn’t find it drying. It is astringent, and you will have to hydrate the skin properly afterwards, but it does not tend to crack like most clay masks do. As promised, Instant Detox Mask shrinks the pores somehow, and the effect is not temporary: I find that it actually lasts for a couple of days! Here is a pro tip: add a few drops of Caudalie Overnight Detox Oil (review coming soon) to power it up while making it more gentle on non-oily skin!
Caudalie Purifying Mask smells like the blend of essential oils it contains (lavender, sage, and cypress to name a few). I also see zinc on the ingredient list, which is why it is better-suited for blemishes. Leave it on for 10 minutes or a bit longer if you feel a spot forming. It is not a harsh clay mask, which is why I think many will appreciate it!
Out of the four, I’d say Instant Detox and Moisturizing are my favorites, but it’s hard not to like all of them. Depending on your skin type/concerns, you can definitely find something your skin loves from the bunch, too!
