I was asked by a reader a while ago whether some people are more prone to dark spots than others. Without going into detail (there are different types of spots), the answer is yes. You could notice a difference depending on your ethnicity (East Asians, such as myself, have a propensity to develop hyperpigmentation), genes, lifestyle, and so on. In my experience, it is easier to find good brightening products than the ones that lighten existing spots. *Darphin Melaperfect Anti-Dark Spots Perfecting Treatment and *Darphin Melaperfect Skin Tone Brightening Moisturizer are wonderful rare examples of the latter!
Melapefect is Darphin’s answer to uneven skin tone and dark spots. Both the serum (treatment) and day cream are available in Europe, although I only see the serum on the U.S. site. The line boasts “SELECTIV MELA SYSTEM™” technology as well as antioxidants. It also makes a rather ambitious claim that you can see the difference in as little as two weeks. Both products have a light earthy scent that I am crazy about. If I had the choice, I prefer unscented skincare products nowadays. However, I have such a soft spot for earthy scents that I simply have to make an exception for Melaperfect!
Housed in a bottle with an airless pump, Darphin Melaperfect Anti-Dark Spots Perfecting Treatment (30 ml/1 oz goes for about 57 euros here in Belgium) has a thicker consistency that feels silky on the skin (because of the silicone). I usually smooth a pump and a half on my skin over a lighter hydrating serum (for example, Darphin Exquisage) twice a day. Despite the fact that it contains quite some silicone, Melaperfect Anti-Dark Spots Perfecting Treatment doesn’t feel like a “film” on the skin.
Darphin Melaperfect Skin Tone Brightening Moisturizer (SPF 20. 50 ml/1,7 oz goes for around 47 euros here) is a slightly thicker cream that comes in a hefty glass jar. You can find a little “spoon” in the box, so there is no need to dip your fingers in the jar. Technically speaking this day cream is meant for normal to dry skin, but the fact that my jar is now half empty proves it works great for combination skin as well. You don’t need a lot at all to cover your face/neck. It takes a little massaging for it to be properly absorbed, but I find it a relaxing experience coupled with the scent. Sunscreen and makeup layer beautifully on top, which is a huge bonus in my book.
I’ve been using both Darphin Melaperfect Anti-Dark Spots Perfecting Treatment and Darphin Melaperfect Skin Tone Brightening Moisturizer for almost three months now, and I did start seeing results after 2-3 weeks. The spots that emerged later (also the ones that are lighter than the more deep-rooted ones) started looking lighter, and my skin is smooth and radiant. Realistically I know it will take much longer for the spots to be truly gone, but these do work and they are very pleasant to use!
Besides using good spot-lightening products continuously, remember to apply enough sunscreen on a daily basis!
So, spots: am I right to assume most people have some? A while ago I started noticing a couple more surfacing and I didn’t like that. I might keep incorporating some spot-lightening products in my routine, but I haven’t really thought about laser yet (if you have done that, I would LOVE to hear about your experience)!
