Clarins has a couple of big launches this fall. They keyword? Pretty! Besides the fall collection, Pretty Day & Night, the Joli Rouge line has been revamped. I can’t be the only person who is always in for a neutral eye and good lipstick. Check out *Clarins Pretty Day Palette, *True Violet Crayon Kohl, *Joli Rouge Joli Rouge, and *Nude Rose Lipliner Pencil!
Pretty Day & Night got the name from the two limited edition neutral quints in the collection. It’s not that you can’t get a night look out of Pretty Day, but the shades do lean light so it is easier to achieve an office/college-appropriate look.
Clarins Pretty Day Palette (01. 7,5 grams/0,2 oz. RRP in Belgium: 47 euros) is housed in a cardboard compact held shut with an elastic. It’s surprising that the packaging is so basic, but Pretty Day will make a great travel companion!
(Do note that the lid lies flat once you open the compact. I propped it up here because having to photograph the mirror would be a pain.)
Clarins Pretty Day is a well-balanced neutral palette with a variety of different finishes. Like I said, the shades lean light, but you can build intensity with the two darker shades.
Pretty Day features a matte off-white, a shimmery pinky beige, a metallic taupe, a matte neutral brown, and a shimmery bronzy brown. The texture is not particularly creamy or crazy pigmented, but there is no dud in the palette. The matte brown is slightly powdery in the swatch, but it works just fine on the eyes.
Clarins Pretty Day (01) swatch:
Pretty Day is a decent and well-balanced palette. All the shades work together easily. There is no fallout during or after application, and blending is very easy. Whether you “need” it or not largely depends on your stash. I think it would make a lovely back-to-school gift or for beginners, as you can practically apply Pretty Day with your eyes closed!
For the look, I used the matte off-white to highlight my brow bones, the pinky beige in the inner corners, the taupe in the inner two thirds, the matte brown in the outer third, and the bronzy brown in the outer v as well as over the liner on my lower lash line:
It might be basic, but I have no complaint other than that!
There are two new shades of Crayon Kohl in the collection. I received True Violet (10. RRP in Belgium: 17 euros). True Violet is a stunning shade, but I never have much luck with anything labeled as kohl and this one is no exception.
Clarins True Violet Crayon Kohl swatch one pass/layered:
The combination of hard texture and poor color payoff is never a good thing, and it is even more so in the case of an eyeliner. I did try True Violet on once, but between having to go over the line multiple times with a hard pencil and having said pencil smudge after a few hours, I say look elsewhere!
I am sure companies have figured out that we LOVE lipsticks, because new formulas are practically falling out the sky these days. The new Clarins Joli Rouge is dubbed as “moisturizing long-wearing lipstick (it promises 6 hours of wear)”. The line-up is composed of 25 shades, and the formula is supposed to be hydrating as well as pigmented.
Clarins Joli Rouge Joli Rouge (742. RRP: 24 euros) is a bright cherry red. It’s the type of failproof red that suits many different skin tones. Clarins’ promises largely hold true: Joli Rouge is incredibly creamy, hydrating, and pigmented. The formula feels very lightweight on. The glossy finish makes the lips seem plumper. The 6-hour wear claim is accurate as long as you do not eat a full meal. Since the formula is creamy, naturally it wears off as you drink/snack. However, I managed to snack and drink quite a bit without feeling the need to reapply. It wears off evenly with no awkward ring. The only thing I have to mention is it bleeds a tiny little bit with food. The bleeding is so minor that I’m sure most people wouldn’t see, but very few formulas do that on me so I thought I’d let you know.
Clarins Joli Rouge Joli Rouge swatch one pass/layered:
If you have dry lips, I think you will really appreciate the formula!
You guys know I have real issues with most “nude” lippies. Clarins is fixing that problem by bringing out 4 different nude lip liners. I think Nude Beige (02) would be more my shade, but I received Nude Rose (03. RRP in Belgium: 16,50 euros).
Clarins Nude Rose Lipliner Pencil swatch one pass/layered:
I am hardly a lip liner connoisseur (I am lazy like that), but this formula is comfortable to apply and wear. It also blends easily enough with the lip color.
A couple more shots with Pretty Day Palette and Joli Rouge Joli Rouge on me:
Did you see anything you might be interested in here? I like the look of Pretty Night, although my buddy Sara seems to have issues making it work. I am still hoping she got a dud, because the shades are so promising!
