Tatcha is a brand that has been on my radar for quite some time. Built on beauty rituals inspired by geisha, the stunning packaging, clever branding, as well as the fact that many people can rave about it for days on end have always made me curious. When I was given the opportunity to try *The Ritual Discovery Kit a little while back, I said yes in a heartbeat!
Tatcha has four Ritual Discovery Kits available for different skin types. I went with the one for normal/combination skin. The content includes their PURE One Step Camellia Cleansing Oil (25 ml/0,8 oz) , POLISHED Classic Rice Enzyme Powder (10 grams/0,35 oz), RADIANT Deep Brightening Serum (10 ml/0,34 oz), and SUPPLE Moisture Rich Silk Cream (10 ml/0,34 oz).
Even though these are travel size products, you can see the enormous amount of attention that went into the packaging. You can purchase all of these separately, but the kit is the best value (59 as opposed to 99 USD if you purchase all four separately).
Let’s begin with my favorite items, namely PURE One Step Camellia Cleansing Oil and POLISHED Classic Rice Enzyme Powder.
I am usually not all that into cleansing oils, but Tatcha PURE One Step Camellia Cleansing Oil is more than a cut above the rest. The consistency is between a runny liquid and a gel, which significantly reduces the risk for dripping. It has a very light scent (smells a little like lavender), and it is more than capable of getting rid of everyday makeup. The best part about this cleansing oil? It doesn’t have to be emulsified! This is the first cleansing oil I’ve tried that just rinses off, and I like the idea very much. One Step Camellia Cleansing Oil also wins bonus points for never irritating my eyes or drying my skin out. It is hands down my favorite cleansing oil!
I haven’t used a physical exfoliant for years, but I have been getting along really well with Tatcha POLISHED Classic Rice Enzyme Powder. Simply pour a bit of the powder out, add water, and massage. It instantly brightens the skin as well as making it baby soft and smooth as glass. The powder cleanser is billed as something you can use on a daily basis. I think the formula is really gentle, but my skin simply can’t handle frequent physical exfoliation. I use this a few times a week. It helps my skin stay in tip-top condition between my weekly at-home chemical peel session. You only need a tiny little each time, so I am not even halfway through my little jar yet! This is definitely on my repurchase list. It is a cleanser that not only cleanses but also exfoliates and brightens!
It might be because the cleansing oil and rice powder are so impressive, but I feel that RADIANT Deep Brightening Serum and SUPPLE Moisture Rich Silk Cream pale a little in comparison. Both of them contain alcohol, which is an ingredient I have been avoiding for quite some time. While I understand that alcohol serves a purpose in certain formulas, my skin doesn’t seem to appreciate it very much.
Tatcha RADIANT Deep Brightening Serum has a lightweight texture that is promptly absorbed by the skin. It has the same light smell as the cleansing oil, but I also smell quite some alcohol. In this weather, it is OK hydrating for my skin, but I’ll definitely need more layers in autumn/winter. The texture of my skin is smooth and fine with this serum, but I can’t say I’ve seen a lot of brightening action. I was on another brightening product prior to testing this out. Maybe my skin has reached its limit.
SUPPLE Moisture Rich Silk Cream is a hydrating gel cream that is great for oilier skin types because it doesn’t make them grease up. Again, it’s a lovely one for summertime, but nothing heavy-duty.
Have you tried anything from Tatcha? I’ve been testing out their new sunscreen, which I will tell you about soon!
