Dior Marilyn Diorific Vernis Reminds Me of My Mom… in the Best Possible Way!

OK, confession time: who does not have a classic neutral red nail polish in their stash?

So it’s really just me? Fine…

I guess I have always been a little weird that way. I have next to no pink blush, and all the red nail polishes I own are dark and shimmery. A straight classic neutral red? Never even given it a thought till I met Dior Marilyn Diorific Vernis!

Dior Grand Bal came with four Diorific Vernis, which is packaged in the ultra glamorous retro bottle. It also contains 12ml (0.40oz) instead of the 10ml (0.33oz) of the regular Dior Vernis. I really like the packaging. It reminds me of a snow globe, and the golden cap is very festive!

(You can see how big the bottle is here)

Luckily for us, the fancy packaging does not compromise convenience here. The cap is rather easy to hold, and while the brush is different from the regular tapered version of Dior Vernis, it is easy to use.

Marilyn is a classic neutral red that has some ruby red shimmer that is very discrete. The consistency is a breeze to work with, and while one coat is already even and very opaque, even with two coats there is this somehow translucent jelly quality that makes the color seem so pure (I find that many Dior Vernis has this interesting quality). In other words, even if the packaging might be different, the quality stays very much Dior.

I was not expecting to fall for this color at all, but the first time I put it on it took me down memory lane. I looked at it and thought:” I’ve seen this somewhere but where?” And then I remembered: in my mom’s wedding photos. I have distinctive memory of flipping through her wedding photos as a child, and seeing one of her best friends painting her nails with a neutral red. Nowadays in Taiwan it’s popular for brides to go for fancy crystal nails, but back at the time almost all of them wore red.

That’s why Dior Marilyn Diorific Vernis reminds me of my mom in the best possible way!

Bottom line: While the color might not be altogether unique, Dior Marilyn Diorific Vernis is the perfect candidate to add a touch of retro glamour to your vanity this season. The great formula, opaque color, and slight translucent/jellyish finish are what make this one a winner for me. Well, and now you know the sentimental value I attach to this shade as well.

Where do you stand on the packaging of Diorific Vernis? Glamorous or bulky? Do you own a neutral red? What cosmetics reminds you of your mom? Also, what nail polish did/would you wear on your big day?

Aaaw, this is so nice! And you’re not alone, I don’t really have a neutral red either for some weird reason. But seeing it on you really makes me want to get one, it’s such a classy colour to wear!

    • Sunny

Haha you should go hunt one down! I used to think it’s too old-school, but it is a true classic and it’s definitely coming back this season!

Ahhh…the packaging gets me every time!!!

    • Sunny

Haha same here. It’s extravagant and perfect for the indulgent holiday season!

  • Shoegal

Every girl needs a neutral red nail polish, and this one looks like it’s a multi-tasker. I agree that the Dior vernis has excellent quality, and I myself am looking forward to the launch of their 2013 line with this special top coat that makes the nail look eerily perfect. By the way, you have lovely fingers, should definitely wear this classic shade more often,

    • Sunny

Yup I’ve got that covered now!

Can’t wait to see what Dior has in store next year. I’m saying it’s going to be another exciting one!

The packaging is really catchy! I have a very similar shade from Lancome Golden Hat collection (which I’ve worn just once *shame face*)

    • Sunny

Haha with our size of stash, a lot of the times it’s not about whether we like something. It’s about whether we still remember it’s there!

  • http://www.peggytimmermans.be/blog Peggy Timmermans Visagie

It’s a beautiful red! And I confess..i don’t have one in my stash! You were not alone…

    • Sunny

      Haha good to know!

  • http://followmarla.blogspot.com/ Marla

That really is a beautiful red shade. Right now my favorite red is “roguish red” from China Glaze. Funny thing is, it came in their 2012 Halloween Collection and I found it to be one of my favorite red polishes ever.

    • Sunny

I had to Google that, and it’s a good one! It looks like it’s got a tiny bit of orange in it, but it looks so different on different skin tones! Interesting :)

The bottle only is already gorgeous!!!

    • Sunny

      I agree!

  • http://eyeheartit.blogspot.com Larie

I hate the packaging this year. HATE. It’s bulky and odd and doesn’t match the normal bottles, and it drives me nuts. I skipped them all, and I usually pick up a shade from every collection.

I wore Dior Shadow for my wedding 😉 I think my mom chose something more neutral and pretty, but I can’t remember. I’ll have to ask her.

    • Sunny

Haha Larie I knew some people don’t like it, but I’m personally a fan!

Such great taste for picking Dior Shadow! It’s a stunning shade, and I bet it’s insane on you!

      Thanks girly!

Sorry about that! I’ll see if I can install a plug-in for that!

i am so glad they brought back these gorgeous nail polish bottles.
i used to have a couple of them and just loved looking at them (or holding them) lolz

this is a great neutral red with glam all over! love it on you.

    • Sunny

Thanks Lena! I remember you saying that, so I’m happy they’re back for you!

I love the new layout! I was pleasantly surprised when I click on your page and saw the new set up.

I adore the packaging of this polish. I am not even the type who cares about polish packaging, but this is really chic and glamorous!

    • Sunny

Thanks Christina! I’m glad you like it!

I love it because it looks like a snow globe! One day I’ll get a proper vanity and display some of these nice pieces on it!

  • http://rrrawr-nailed.blogspot.ca Winnie@ RRRawr//NAILed

This is SUCH a rich and gorgeous red….although I’m not sure if I like the packaging….
looks great and all, but what was it like applying the polish??

    Regardless. Gorgeous.
and brides these days need to stay away from the crystals….LOL

    • Sunny

Hey Winnie, it’s really easy to work with the brush. I have pretty long fingers but holding onto the cap isn’t awkward!

You should see some bridal nail designs in Asia. They can be SO going-all-out!

  • http://www.beauty-reflections.com Tracy@Beauty Reflections

So pretty of a red and so classic! But reds are something I am afraid of on my nails haha! I’ve never owned a Dior polish for some reason either. I need to fix that at some point or I’ll lose my beauty blogger card!

    • Sunny

Haha you won’t lose your beauty blogger card, but try one of these ASAP in any case!

  • http://chelles-blog.nl Michelle

What a great colour! And I really love the bottle.

    • Sunny

Glad to hear you like it, Michelle! The bottle is really cute! Probably not the easiest to store because it’s so different from most, but it’s very glamorous!

  • Sarah

Lol Sunny that is interesting about not owning such colours! (I’m laughing with you, not at you!) 😉 I think these shades never go out of fashion and add a bit of class! I’m glad you are now converted to these shades. :)

    • Sunny

Hey Sarah! I know! I was never sure how they’d look on me, so being a wimp I never wanted to try! I’m glad I own one now!

  • http://www.valleydollbeautyblog.blogspot.com ValleyDoll

I love it ! Would buy this just for the packaging alone, just gorgeous !

    • Sunny

Haha in that case I hope you’ll find a good shade for you out of the four!

  • http://www.nailsandcupcakes.com Isabelle

I’ve been arguing with myself on which one of the Dior Grand Bal lacquers to buy. I’m thinking I really need to get this one as I don’t have anything neutral, or anything red for that matter, to put on my nails. You now convinced me that this will be the one. The packaging is gorgeous and everyone, including me, needs a neutral red in their collection.

(did I just again convince myself I NEED a lacquer?)

    • Sunny

Haha I’m glad I could help! I love this one for sentimental reasons, and also it’s something classic for the stash! I also think Diva is very promising. I might… lay my hands on that one too :p
