OK, confession time: who does not have a classic neutral red nail polish in their stash?
So it’s really just me? Fine…
I guess I have always been a little weird that way. I have next to no pink blush, and all the red nail polishes I own are dark and shimmery. A straight classic neutral red? Never even given it a thought till I met Dior Marilyn Diorific Vernis!
Dior Grand Bal came with four Diorific Vernis, which is packaged in the ultra glamorous retro bottle. It also contains 12ml (0.40oz) instead of the 10ml (0.33oz) of the regular Dior Vernis. I really like the packaging. It reminds me of a snow globe, and the golden cap is very festive!
(You can see how big the bottle is here)

Luckily for us, the fancy packaging does not compromise convenience here. The cap is rather easy to hold, and while the brush is different from the regular tapered version of Dior Vernis, it is easy to use.
Marilyn is a classic neutral red that has some ruby red shimmer that is very discrete. The consistency is a breeze to work with, and while one coat is already even and very opaque, even with two coats there is this somehow translucent jelly quality that makes the color seem so pure (I find that many Dior Vernis has this interesting quality). In other words, even if the packaging might be different, the quality stays very much Dior.
I was not expecting to fall for this color at all, but the first time I put it on it took me down memory lane. I looked at it and thought:” I’ve seen this somewhere but where?” And then I remembered: in my mom’s wedding photos. I have distinctive memory of flipping through her wedding photos as a child, and seeing one of her best friends painting her nails with a neutral red. Nowadays in Taiwan it’s popular for brides to go for fancy crystal nails, but back at the time almost all of them wore red.
That’s why Dior Marilyn Diorific Vernis reminds me of my mom in the best possible way!
Bottom line: While the color might not be altogether unique, Dior Marilyn Diorific Vernis is the perfect candidate to add a touch of retro glamour to your vanity this season. The great formula, opaque color, and slight translucent/jellyish finish are what make this one a winner for me. Well, and now you know the sentimental value I attach to this shade as well.
Where do you stand on the packaging of Diorific Vernis? Glamorous or bulky? Do you own a neutral red? What cosmetics reminds you of your mom? Also, what nail polish did/would you wear on your big day?
