Guerlain always does things a little unexpectedly. When everyone else is doing soft pinks for spring, we’re getting green, coral, and purple from them. Of course I can’t complain, since I happen to be major fans of these colors. When I saw Guerlain Coup de Foudre Ecrin 4 Couleurs (502, limited edition. RRP in Belgium: 55, 10 euros), I knew if I had to pick one piece from the collection this would be it! It truly is love at first sight!
Guerlain Ecrin 4 Couleurs comes in a luxurious-looking gold compact as well as a black velvet pouch.
Coup de Foudre has an interesting color combination. There is nothing neutral or safe about this one, though the colors work together easily.
The first shade is a khaki, copper, and antique gold rolled into one. It is shimmery with a metallic sheen, and the texture is amazingly soft. Just one swipe will give you great color payoff, and the color goes on really smooth!
The second shade is a reddish coral with golden shimmer. The color payoff is great, though it is slightly drier and somehow powdery. The good news it blends very easily. A bit too easily somehow, and if you want it to really show you might have to go back after you have decided where you want it. However, since it is such a bright pop of color, I don’t necessarily see it as a bad thing. Imagine having a shade like this that is crazy pigmented and not so blendable — don’t you smell trouble?
I have also tried to use this as a blush and it works! Now do remember that it is slightly powdery, so the blush brush picks up quite a bit of color with a light tap. It is slightly more shimmery than what I am used to, but not something that will sink into pores and stress them. I do have to make more effort blending it, as a blush, but it can be done and I do like how it looks on my cheeks. It has amazing lasting power as well. I wore it for 9 hours, and it was still very much intact by the time I decided to remove my makeup!
The third shade is a frosty seafoam green. Again, this shade is soft and buttery with excellent color payoff. Very impressive! Generally speaking I avoid using non-neutrals in my inner corners, but this coordinates well with all the other shades, doesn’t stand out too much, and it is brightening.
Last but not least, we have a gunmetal gray with a blackened green sheen. This shade has a slightly harder and drier texture, and it benefits from a little layering. However, it is rather easy to work with and build up. Do note that at least for me, I have to cover my dark circles particularly well if I want to use this shade on my lower lash line. Otherwise, for some reason it makes them look darker than what they are!
Here is all of them swatched together:
There are many different ways to use this quad, and I am showing you two looks here.
For the first one, I used the khaki/copper/antique gold all over my lids, the seafoam green in my inner corners and patted onto the center of my lids, and the gunmetal gray on the outer corner/over my lower lash line:
The second time I got a little bolder. I had to see how this coral would work on me! It turned out to be pretty easy breezy to be honest.
I used seafoam green for the inner half of my lids and in my inner corners, the coral on the outer half, the khaki for my outer v, and the gunmetal gray on my lower lash line. I also used the coral as a blush:
I don’t know about you, but this coral is really not as shocking as I thought it would be. I am not going to pretend you can easily incorporate it into your office looks, but it would be fun for any other occasions!
Bottom line: Guerlain Coup de Foudre Ecrin 4 Couleurs packs an amazingly fun color combination. Two out of the four shades have excellent quality, the coral is slightly powdery but the payoff is excellent, and the gunmetal gray can be built up easily. All in all I would recommend the quad. For more conservative occasions, you can always use the coral as a blush instead!
Have you seen Guerlain Coup de Foudre Ecrin 4 Couleurs? Coral on the lids, yay or nay? Last time I tried coral on my lids I wasn’t too convinced (it was with Guerlain Les Fauves Ecrin 4 Couleurs). Either I have become more open-minded or the greens in this one really help!
